Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments.
“Today, I made the decision that it was the best thing for our country, for the American people that I not continue to be considered by the president for nomination of secretary of state,” Rice told NBC’s Brian Williams.
“I didn’t want to see a confirmation process that was very prolonged, very politicized, very distracting and very disruptive because there are so many things we need to get done as a country and the first several months of a second term president’s agenda is really the opportunity to get the crucial things done.”
Rice noted that President Obama’s second-term agenda included “comprehensive immigration reform, balanced deficit reduction, job creation.”
She added, “And to the extent that my nomination could have delayed or distracted or deflected or maybe even some of these priorities impossible to achieve, I didn’t want that and I much prefer to keep doing what I’m doing which is a job I love at the United Nations.”
The full interview with Rice will air on tonight’s “Rock Center With Brian Williams” at 10p/9c. Excerpts will also be broadcast on Nightly News at 6:30 pm ET.
Obama said in a statement that he accepted her decision and regretted “the unfair and misleading attacks” on Rice, who was considered a front-runner to replace Hillary Clinton as the nation’s top foreign policy official.
Criticism over remarks
Rice has been under intense fire from Republicans for initially characterizing the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as a spur-of-the-moment response to a crude anti-Muslim film.
“What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, which were prompted, of course, by the video,” Rice said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” five days after the attack.
“Opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding. They came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are readily available in post-revolutionary Libya, and it escalated into a much more violent episode.”
As more details emerged suggesting it was a premeditated terrorist action, GOP critics accused Rice of misleading the public at the height of the presidential campaign.
She countered that she went with the best information available about the attack, in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
“I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. I made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers,” she said on Nov. 21 at the United Nations.
By then, Obama had already expressed strong support for Rice, warning Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) to stop slamming her and vowing to block her confirmation.
“They should go after me,” he said at his first press conference after his re-election.
Despite a series of closed-door meeting with Capitol Hill lawmakers to drum up support, Rice continued to face questions from senators key to her confirmation.
After a Nov. 28 sitdown with Rice, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she couldn’t yet endorse the veteran diplomat and raised a new point of concern: her role in protecting American embassies in Kenya and Nairobi that were bombed by terrorists in 1998.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) suggested Rice was seen as too much of an Obama loyalist and the GOP preferred “someone of independence.”
Attack on critics
In her resignation letter to Obama, Rice took aim at her GOP critics.
“The position of secretary of state should never be politicized,” she wrote.
“As someone who grew up in an era of comparative bipartisanship and as a sitting U.S. national security official who has served in two U.S. Administrations, I’m saddened that we have reached this point, even before you have decided whom to nominate. We cannot afford such an irresponsible distraction from the most pressing issues facing the American people.”
Obama praised Rice as “an extraordinarily capable, patriotic, and passionate public servant.”
“While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first.”
McCain and Graham, among Rice’s loudest critics, said they would continue to press the administration on Benghazi.
“I respect Ambassador Rice’s decision,” Graham said in a statement. “President Obama has many talented people to choose from to serve as our next secretary of state.”
The withdrawal leaves Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) as a possible candidate for the job, and Republicans have said he would have a smoother run.
"I think John Kerry would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues," Collins said last month.
Rice, 48, has been the United States’ permanent representative to the United Nations since 2009, after serving as a senior advisor to the Obama campaign, working at the Brookings Institution and holding other diplomatic and national security positions dating back to 1993.

Seriously people: You do not divulge classified information, no matter how "obvious" it may seem at the time. Get that through your heads, she was told what she could and could not say. You think this is the first time you've been lied to by the government? I assure you both political parties hold back PLENTY of information that the average citizen does not need to know.
As for the "say nothing" idea: It's pretty obvious we were trying to mislead the terrorists in Libya who probably were listening to our news stations. Again: that type of thing happens plenty often.

If you watched msnbc it was 2 weeks later before they finaly reported that it was a terroist attack.
I had a feeling this was coming once I saw that Hagel was being talked about as Secretary of Defense. At one point Kerry was considered the front runner for that position. Once Is heard about Hagel, I figured that meant the Kerry was going to be the Secretary of State nominee. Obama realized that he was not going to win the battle to get Rice through as the next Secretary of State and I am sure that Rice withdrawing was done with the full knowledge of and likely some prompting from the White House. Obama could not been seen as caving in to the Republicans by not nominating Rice so she was asked to withdraw her name from consideration to save Obama from having to acknowledge that he had lost the battle over Rice. Her withdrawing lets Obama save face. I am sure that Kerry will be named as the nominee very soon, possibly as soon as today or tomorrow. Hagel as Secretary of Defense and Kerry at State is a far better choice than Rice at State and Kerry at Defense.

She lied to the American people by repeating the exact talking points that the CIA gave her, based on the fact that the release of any other information would have compromised the safety of their agents and informants. HOW DARE SHE?!?! You are totally right lukewarm. Maybe our government should have a facebook page that publishes all classified information regarding our undercover informants and agents, so that the American people never feel betrayed like this again. They could just put a disclaimer at the top of the page saying "None of the 143 U.S. designated Terrorist Organizations are allowed to read this page." I'm sure it would work out well.
By the way, the goal of terrorism isn't necessarily to kill people, it is to spread fear, insecurity, and cause civil unrest. Anyone who is outraged and feeling such hate for our own country's defenders and leaders, is doing exactly what the terrorists hope to accomplish when they commit these attacks.

She was paraded out on five political talk shows with a "story" told to her by the Obama administration, which sought to diminish the presence of Al Qaeda in that region, and she got caught.
This was to provide cover for Obama's re-election, because if terrorism still existed in a big way in the region, it would make him look bad.
The media tried to run with her story, but the TRUTH came out.

Condi Rice stood in front of a picture of a mushroom cloud and said we couldn't afford to wait on Saddam to do us in, a lie if ever there was one. She most certainly lied. As UN Ambassador (a Cabinet-level post,) Ms. Rice received the daily classified briefings which, we have since learned, indicated days before her "Meet the Press" appearance that there was no "copycat" demonstration in Benghazi.
She was clearly aware before she appeared on "Meet the Press" that the intelligence indicated the attack was a premeditated terrorist act, not a leveraged spontaneous protest. She chose instead to spin a more Obama campaign-friendly version of events.
Maybe Obama should have thought about the consequences before having someone from his administration go out and lie to the American People. But then a majority of the same idiots went out and voted for the worst president we have ever had, so now we are stuck with another 4 years. Goes to teach that if you put enough people on the governments tit then they will vote for you.
There is, of course, no evidence that she "lied." Instead, it seems to have been made amply clear...at least to adults...that the early information (i.e. "talking points") she was given were not entirely accurate, not an unusual circumstance in the wake of an unexpected tragedy.

In order to leave John Kerry seat intact(and not have the GOP rule him)Obama should now nominate Jesse Jackson or Al Gore to the post. Both Senators McCain and Graham are on the record for stating that there were chemical weapons in Iraq before that war. Their statements were based on the "best available intelligence" at the time. First of all, it was not necessary for her to go on TV and run her mouth right after it happened. It wasn't her job. I believe she did this for Obama, (to divert attention from the facts of Benghazi and to deflect attention from the election) with the promise of her advancement after the election. Unfortunately, she chose poorly and now is being shown the door. If she is willing to be party to subterfuge like this, is she really the right person for Secretary of State. (Absolutely not.)

This info was even acknowledged by McCain and Co. as truth when the intelligence community and CIA both stated they redacted the info she got when she went on those Sunday morning talk shows, though he kept side-stepping that fact to simply demonize her. Hell, McCain even called a special meeting demanding more info, in which she (Rice) complied, and then he promptly didn't attend that meeting, where in the very same day, he was demanding that info; WTF!
McCain has had it out for Rice since the 2008 election. McCain also stated that Ms. Rice wasn't "bright"; this is a woman who is a Rhodes Scholar, has a PhD in Philosophy and has worked in international relations and the foreign dept of US government for decades, something McCain has been a near failure in the past 10 years, being the warhawk he is. I guess calling her not "bright" says a lot for a man who in 2008, picked the dimmest bulb possible for a running-mate who took 6 years to graduate from 4 different colleges with a degree in communications focusing on journalism (though she could tell Katie Couric what periodicals she ever read!!). Palin's education emphasis was running in beauty contest, playing the flute, then going on to be a sportscaster, small town mayor, then bailing on Alaska as governor after that ignominious 2008 defeat.
Ayotte and Graham should be equally ashamed and they will be remembered in their elections for this and for going too far to the right.

The reason her nomination was going nowhere, is because
1) there were two other international events not widely publicized that she likewise had bun a hand in bungling security & not being truthful about it.
2) She is one of the least attentive ambassadors to the UN that we have had in recent history. She has missed key votes where the US needed to put in an opposing opinion and rather lacking in standing up for US interests.
Throw in the towel, I'd rather see Hilary continue or even John Kerry over this lady.

When Bush stated what was known at the time, the left claims he lied. When Rice told what she knew at the time (although there are records showing otherwise), the left wants her forgiven.......
It's true that "what they knew at the time" can be hard to pin down. But there are more important differences between those examples. Rice's comments had no consequences. Bush's got us into a very expensive war. There also is a lot more evidence against what Bush and his administration said, but that can be endlessly argued.

in response to Rick. Obama will compromise if we lift the debt ceiling, meaning, spend all the money you want to fix our economy. How can responsible spending be done if you don't worry about the bill. Thats downright saying give me all the power in the country.

Increased the debt by 50%. When President Obama was a candidate, he promised he would halve the deficit by the end of his first term. Yet every budget since he's been in office has had a larger deficit than the year before and the debt, $10.6 trillion when took office, now exceeds $16 trillion. Rather than cut the deficit by 50%, he's increased the debt by that much. Worse, the long-term liabilities we owe are exploding — by one estimated, we now owe $76 trillion more than we'll take in over the next half century or so. We're on the path to potential insolvency, the magnitude of which the world has never seen.
Big respect for Susan Rice. She's doing what every good politician should do. Swallowing her pride, putting aside her ambition and trying to do what's best for the American People. It's a shame it's come to this. But I really appreciate her sacrifice and her service.

She also did what every other politician in the world does - lied when the truth would have made a better story.
I don't see how she thought she would get away with it. Maybe she's not actually as bright as everybody seems to think she is.
Or maybe she did what she was told to do in the interests of national security. I've heard that the intelligence community put out the story the way they did because they wanted the terrrorists to feel like they'd gotten away with it and that we were duped. But then, maybe they should check with FOX and Limbaugh before they do anything and make sure they're in agreement. "Gee Rush, we've got Bin Laden in our sights, but we wanted to check with you first - should we take him out?"
She made very bad choices and we cannot afford to have someone in that position who lacks morals or integrity. How can another country trust a word she says when she is well known for lying to her own country. At least she had a bit of integrity left. Time to say adios to politics and be a stay at home mom.

And we took advantage of their overconfidence to catch them unaware and... oh wait, we didn't. Oh well.. at least it got Obama reelected. And THAT was all that ever mattered to Rice & company. Anyone that says otherwise is lying. Anyone that believes otherwise is lying to themselves.
