Rock Center
Put simply, this is just another striving, improbable, poetic American Dream story: How a family, venerating work and education, traveled from the notorious South Central LA of “Boyz In The Hood” to settle in Spielberg Americana in the shadow of the soaring San Bernardino Mountains—a family with not one but two brothers recruited to play Division I football at Washington State University, followed even more notably by NFL careers.
But this story has taken many more remarkable turns. Tonight on Rock Center with Brian Williams (10p ET), in a remarkable journey from Southern California to Saudi Arabia, correspondent Mary Carillo tells the story of Husain and Hamza Abdullah, who, at their athletic peak … associated with America’s most glamorous, most popular sport … walked away, for the glory of God.
“We’ve been playing football since we were 8 years old,” Husain Abdullah told Carillo, “from Pop Warner to high school, and to college, and into the NFL. And although we're knocking down all these barriers, doing things that people said you can't do, all of a sudden, it was like there's more to life than this. There's more. And we had to go for it.”
Their motivation arrived over a lifetime, and all at once. This past spring, Husain and Hamza felt an urgent need to more fully address the pillars of their Islamic faith, including the most difficult test of all, the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, an annual concentration of humanity unequaled on the planet.
In so doing, 27-year-old Husain (who had become a starter with the Minnesota Vikings), and 29-year-old Hamza (an established seven-year veteran last with the Arizona Cardinals) would sacrifice annual paychecks in the range of a million dollars. Instead, cognizant of their platforms as NFL players, they decided not only to seek greater spiritual fulfillment, but also to nurture a greater tolerance of their Islamic faith by spreading a greater understanding of its truths.
“In Islam,” Hamza Abdullah said, “the first word revealed was ikra, which means read or recite. So it's incumbent on all Muslims to gain knowledge. And, you know, if someone comes and asks me a question, ‘Hamsa, what's the five pillars of faith in Islam,’ I should be able to tell you: Shahada, the declaration of faith: Salat, the five prayers a day; Zakat, giving alms to the poor; Ramadan, fasting during the month of Ramadan; and then finally the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.”
Like many American Muslims, the Abdullah brothers have been falsely associated with versions of Islamic extremism they don’t recognize.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Hamza was a sophomore at Washington State, where he was an electrifying presence on the team’s defense. He received a call at 6 a.m. from a teammate telling him to turn on the TV and watch the breaking news about the attack on the World Trade Center towers. Not long after that day, both brothers would find themselves equated with the 9-11 hijackers—men with a distorted view of Islam and a deep hatred of America … men with whom the brothers had nothing in common.

“I think 9/11 was an educational opportunity,” Hamza says. “It sounds crazy to say that. But it opened eyes for a lot of people, including myself. And people would ask me about Islam. They’d ask: ‘Can you guys kill people?’ And I would ask them: ‘In what book does it say that you can go and do acts of terrorism?’ The Quran doesn’t say that. Islam is a religion of peace.”
This past year, accustomed to thorough preparation and high performance, the brothers have been machine-like in their faithfulness. Along with their older brother Abbas, they spent the holy month of Ramadan on a multistate, cross-country tour: reaching 30 mosques in 30 days, but also stopping at food kitchens and holding teaching sessions with youth groups.
The climax of this year surrendered to the glory of God was the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudia Arabia, known as the Hajj. There, the brothers joined a multitude of millions.
“The first thing we noticed in Mecca was how much the other Muslims we met love Americans," said Hamsa. "They absolutely adore us. When you say, ‘America,’ they love you. And you really felt proud, like a sense of: ‘That’s my nation. That's my country.’ And, you know, a lot of the times that kind of gets lost in translation: that Islam is our religion, yes. But our country is the United States of America.”

Will Hamza and Husain Abdullah, with the quiet force of their personalities and the depth of their integrity, be welcomed back into the NFL?
“We’d love to have Husain back,” said Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier. “A lot of things have to fall in place. But the door is not closed.”
“Time and time again, Hamza’s going to be the guy that’s going to encourage you,” said Cardinals veteran All-Pro safety Adrian Wilson. “He’s always said that football isn’t about him. It’s about playing for your brother. It’s about playing for the guy that’s beside you.”
Hamza offered these thoughts after his return from Mecca:
“You know, we're playing football, America's number one game. We went on a road trip. What's more American than a road trip?”
But this was hardly any ordinary road trip, as the Rock Center team would learn in this story about a remarkable leap of faith.

Islam's roots were very violent if you study Mohammad's life. Doesn't sound peaceful to me.
The same can be said for the Old Testament. If you follow the life of David or many other patriarchs of Christianity, there is a lot of killing at their hands. The roots are not what our outcome is suppose to become. Overcoming the violence is the challenge.
Christianity is based on the New Testament. Judaism is based on the Old Testament, nothing in the NT says to kill anyone who does not believe like you do, the Koran does.
Nearly every religion's "roots" are very violent. I find it funny you single out Islam. Maybe Buddhism and a couple other can make a claim to peaceful roots - but the big three - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - are steeped in violence. Violence often counter to the teachings at the heart of the religion, but violence nonetheless.
As for these two guys - more power to them for following their hearts.
Mark- Clearly you have NOT studied Islam or the life of Prophet Mohammed. Because if you did, you would read about how many people would try to harm/poison/kill him and yet he would show the utmost kindness and patience with them. Go educate yourself before you type/spew false information.
If Christianity is based on the New Testament Gary, why is the Old Testament included in the Bible? Should the Old Testament be disregarded completely? What about the 10 commandments? I'm not being snarky, I have never been given a clear answer on this so I'm asking.
Mark, in one sentence you have proven the point of how ignorant most Americans are about the Islamic faith.
Any and every social event must be read in historical context. No person familiar with the Crusades could ever consider Christianity a peaceful religion using the logic of your argument. The Crusaders brutally murdered Muslims, Jews and other Christians, in part because the Pope gave them dispensation [religious forgiveness] to do so.
The problem most have today is the egocentric inability to separate the supposed practitioner from the doctrine. Think how many violent, racist and self centered people call themselves "Christian." This includes those who would exclude and even murder others for their "Christian faith." Yet most Americans do not judge Christianity as a whole by the misguided acts of those who behave in ways that Christ never would have approved. At the same time, these same Americans are quick to condemn Islam based upon the actions of a few extremists who happen to call themselves Muslim while acting in ways that the Prophet and the Q'uran would not have approved.
@Gary-3017851 :: Not true the Christianity is still based on the Old Testament ... it just also has the New Testament on top of it.
Without the Old Testament ... there is no Adam/Eve. There is no Creationism. There is no Moses. There is no 40 day flood. There is no 10 commandments.
Pretty sure those are all staples of the Christian faith and have their roots in the Old Testament.
Don't try to disavow the fact that the Christian faith is just as notorious as all other religions when it comes to violence within its roots.
You could argue that maybe Christianity has matured (I'd argue otherwise), but you can't deny that there wasn't violence in its roots (which go way past what is outlined in the OT or NT.
LisaP, you are the one who has clearly not studied Islam. The Prophet Mohammad killed hundreds with his own hand and instructed the killing of thousands who would not convert. The only assured path to heaven in Islam is to perform a jihad against infidels, nonbelievers. This is the same man who had multiple wives, his favorite being a 10 year old. Those who talk of the crusades representing Christianity have not read the bible or were not following the teachings of Jesus, NOWHERE in the bible does Jesus tell anyone to kill in his name.
And Christanity was not violent?
The vast majority of wars fought since the time of Christ have been religious, Christians kill Jews because of thier beliefs, CHirstians kill Muslims because of the differences in beliefs. Muslims kill Jews because of beliefs, Jews kill Palistinians because of a religious belief. While Jesus may not have called for killing in his name there has sure been a whole hell of a lot of killing in his name. What we have in our AMerican World today is a total lack of tolerance for anyone who has different beliefs, we lack an ability to have a civil discourse, we base our descions on our true god the unholy dollar. The problem is not god nor his prophets the problem is when man organizes those beliefs into 'teachings' and than are untolerant of thoise who may not believe or disagree.
cappy 1911 the old and new testament are accounts of Mans ecounters with God. these encounters were purposed by God with a specific intent of reconciling man with his creator.the propehtic coming and detailed discription of Jesus before he was produced to save humanity from everlasting death is a large part of the old testament . the new testament is fulfillement of prophecy and a perfected law that supercedes the 10 commandments but not disqaulifying it . God is embodied in Jesus and gives a picture of mankind as God would have us all to be while in this life.
@gary who stated:
I assume you are talking about the word "infidel" which occurs in English versions of the Qur'an (one is not supposed to read the Qur'an in another language btw). The word "infidel" is LATIN - it means a person with NO faith - in ANY GOD. So, pagans would have been a target, the ones that remained after Christianity killed or converted them.
The Qur'an does not say to "kill" the infidel - it does give you the right to kill an "infidel" if they try to kill you. People of faith - be it a Jewish or Christian person, a Muslim person must work for a peaceful way to end the problem - work on peace (not conversion) peace.
The Qur'an has many beautiful passages about Jesus, Mary and many other figures that exist in both the Christian and Jewish Holy books - In Islam, Jesus is a Prophet - and no, the Qur'an does not say he was an "infidel," quite the opposite.
These two men are entitled to lead whatever types of lives they choose. Apparently they've already made a good amount of money for themselves, so why shouldn't they do with it as they wish?
Not all religiously inclined people are rabid extremists.
I wish that people would get their facts straight "before" they make a statement. For many who have no idea that Allah & God are NOT one and the same. For Christ followers, God is God and no other. For followers of Islam, Allah is Allah & no other. Oh, they try to say they are the same, but in essence, they are not. See their God is the God of Abraham, Ishamel & Jacob. Where Christ followers God is the God of Abraham, Issac & Jacob. The Islamists do not recognize Issac as the true heir of Abraham. That is one reason why there is constant war between the muslim countries and Israel. Which really doesn't make sense because Jacob (aka Israel) is the seed of Issac and not Ishmael. Islam does mention Jesus, proving to many that He really did exist, however, they do not see Him as the Son of God, but rather a mere prophet of lesser degree than Mohammed. God is God. Allah is Allah. There is a big difference.
Allah MEANS God. No difference.
No one has caused more violence in the name of God than christians. I does not make all christians evil or violent . To lump all muslims togetherwith the terrorists is equally incorrect.
As a christian who has traveled the middle east for decades, I have rarely heard hatred directed at the american people. Plenty of anomosity toward what they consider unfair government policies, but thanks to hollywood, fast food and our technology, we are, for better or worse, admired as a people everywhere.
2 more people lead astray by a false prophet religion..this will happen more and more just wait until the gitmo detainees are brought to the U.S. and placed in prisons they will influence and radicalize the bitter and uneducated to hate the U.S. and to be a martyr for the cause..
The crusades stopped in the 1200 Hundreds. Jihad has never stopped and never will until we are all mooselimbs or we are to be KILLED if we don't convert. Their so called Prophet was a self indulgent POS who had a 10yr. old wife.
kamika explains very well to Muslims it does mean a difference you will never hear a Muslim say the word god when they pray it is always Allah in English or Akbar means Allah in Arabic, pardon if the spelling is incorrect but you get the meaning, they believe the word god refers to the Jewish god or the Christian god so they don't say god also the Koran is very violent book and the old testament were of different times in the world the new testament changed every thing and brought about drastic changes and that is what Jesus was teaching that all people(gentiles) would be accepted not just the Jews and he also taught to love your enemies it is the people that interpret the bible to there liking that have corrupted Christianity and twisted the verses or just read one portion of a verse and do not read the rest that pertains to that verse. If people would actually sit down, read and study the bible they would understand it a whole lot better than just quoting verses. and not even know what they are saying. but most people will not do that "they don't have the time" time is running out and sadly we will not all saved and those that don't will be saying, what happened!!
2 more people lead astray by a false prophet religion..this will happen more and more just wait until the gitmo detainees are brought to the U.S. and placed in prisons they will influence and radicalize the bitter and uneducated to hate the U.S. and to be a martyr for the cause..
And this is what happens when Christians take an "Out of sight, out of mind" approach to inmates and throw them in prisons and ignore them instead of ministering to them. Years ago I was part of a church prison ministry, and when I asked the Muslim inmates why they converted to Islam, the number reason was "The Christians want to sit in judgment of me and won't even try to come here and talk to me. At least the Muslims make me feel that I matter to somebody."
christians and muslims what's the difference, a few words here and there. They are one in the same, brothers under one false gawd. You fools who argue for this or that are basically sheepwashed one way or another. No one is saving your souls.
kamika,
i've spent a lifetime searching for, confronting and learning who God is. you're wrong, i'm sorry. in the old testament, before issac and ishamel, God is the same entity in all the three main religions. He didn't suddenly change into two different beings. and in truth, none of it matters. God describes himself to Moses. "I am that i am. i am the alpha and the omega." God never appears as anything but one force of energy or another. God is not some guy sitting on a cloud with a sceptor in his hand or some guy in a room with 40 virgins. God is not a man, he never was. God is the universe, aware of itself, an energy that is alive but not in any way that we can conceive of life. the religious dogmas of the three major sects have done nothing more than change Zeus into one god. for eons of time, people have been brainwashed, coersed into following ancient faiths updated for the ever changing world. But, the truth is, God is none of these. He tried to tell us, but we couldn't understand it. today, we can, but the hierarchy of the major religions are hellbent on keeping the masses ignorant of the truth, because if we all truly understood the nature of God and our real part in the universe, we just wouldn't need them and they would lose power and of course, money.
jesus tried to tell us that the only thing that really matters is charity, love, kindness and compassion. he said that once you die, there are no men and women. when he was resurrected he would routinely disappear into thin air. i'm sorry, but that's not human. but, the church used jesus, like the hammer of Thor to kowtow the masses into submission, using violence and fear, not the love and compassion that Jesus spoke of and for millennia have controlled not just their own flocks, but the world.
there are scientists out there, if you read, that say the universe connotes intelligence, that it seems that the universe was created for and by intelligence. they will not go so far as to say that there is a God, because they cannot prove it and that's what science is about. but, if you think about it, God being the living universe is no crazier than some guy sitting on a cloud. our place in this living universe is that WE are all a part of it. the essence of each and every one of us is already part of God because we are all made up of the stuff that the universe if made of. and our consciousness, our souls are part of the 'mind' of God. jesus said as much! he said that the kingdom of God in within you. we are all connected, christian, jew, muslim, buddhist, all humans everywhere for all time and until we realize that, truly, we will suffer.
as long as we allow the powers behind organized religion dictate to us what our faith should be, as long as we allow them to foment hatred, prejudice, arrogance and greed, we will suffer. it is only in giving into the true nature of God and your part in the universe that we can allow these negative aspects of ourselves to dissipate. you may not believe this, but we are becoming a kinder race. if you read history, you would see just how brutal and cruel the world has been.
how do you do this? like these brothers have done it. they spend their time spreading not hatred, but tolerance, love and brotherhood. who cares that there are some muslims who are full of hate? that is not every muslim out there. we have these same type of radicals here in this country, christians who believe they have some "God given right" to dictate to the rest of us how to live our lives and if it were not for the civil liberties we live by and the stable government that maintains those civil liberties, we would be not much better off than the third world countries where the church runs things.
when you humanize God, you minimize Him. you put upon him all the negative aspects of humanity. that, my dear is Zeus, that is Thor. it is NOT the true power of the universe. when you no longer adhere to the dogmas of organized religion, you are set free to truly be one with God. that doesn't mean your life will suddenly become roses and riches. it just means that you can look at the world without having to blame someone else or something else for you woes. you can take responsibility for your own life and make your life what you choose. you can put out positive energy into the universe and it will respond, helping you live a life that is full of love and friendship. it's not that hard. one place you could start to understand this is a film called "THE SECRET." it doesn't support any religious sect, rather it is just a new look on life. another place is the SGIUSA.COM. it is a buddhist group of laymen, not priests who teach you how to live happily. it is not traditional buddhism. it's interesting and the people are beautiful people who do not judge others and you don't have to give up your personal beliefs to follow their philosophy.
do yourself a favor, this isn't for me. just start doing some reading about what science is saying about the universe, question your church, especially when they are espousing negative ideals, open yourself up to new ideas, and pray. the universe is there, waiting for you. your energy, you inner power is enough.
I love the comments re the GITMO detainiees - we have had Muslims in our prisons for years - ever heard of Lewis Ferrakhan (sp?). Muhammad ALi is a Muslim. We have had Muslims in AMerica for hundred years or more.
Re the crusades yeah they ended around 800 years ago - but Christians have kept killing in the name of their religion - just look at the 30's and 40's in EUrope, how many Jews were killed by the Germans in the name of their Protestant Religion.
I really wish you had used some citations when you were speaking of the things Jesus said, because I seem to have missed several of those sections of scripture. What I read said "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes unto the Father except by me." This does not equate us as a part of God. He speaks multiple times in John about the need for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which would not be needed if we were a part of God. If we were a part of God, He would no longer be a perfect God, as we are not perfect. Jesus told us that the only thing that really matters is a relationship with Him...I doubt he was turning the tables of the money changers over at the temple to show that love, kindness and compassion were the only things that really mattered. On many occasions He intimated that the path to heaven is narrow and few will find it, how could this be if we are all a part of God? You have no doubt spent a lot of time reading but I think you're withdrawing the pieces you want to see without looking at the entirety of the passages.
Ok... ignorant Christians depress me.
1 Tim. 3:16, 17, in the new testament, reads that "ALL Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, reproving.. etc". Jesus quoted extensively from the Old Testament.
To clarify: The old testament is a historical account of God's interaction with man up until Christ's time, during that time, Jews were the "chosen nation" of God, representative of a theocracy based around service to YHWH (Yahweh). During that time, the nation was constantly enthralled in battles and wars with surrounding nations, most of whom followed a polytheistic religious theocracy. Bloodshed, murders, tons of bad things happened. The Israelites repeatedly rejected God, who would in turn not interfere when the surrounding nations would overthrow Jerusalem. All of this covers the Abrahamic covenant, which promised that the Messianic seed would come through Abraham's line.
Phoo... ok, the New Testament, is based upon the period starting at Christ's birth, which is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant (the Messiah was born the Abrahamic lineage). It covers the Messianic covenant, which promises it's followers a new style of theocracy, where the kingdom wouldn't be establish on earth, with human rulers, but in heaven, with Christ as king.
The Old Testament, while the rules and regulations no longer necessarily apply (since the covenant was fulfilled with Christs birth), still is useful to Christians because it teaches them about God's interaction with humans throughout the centuries, and the principals still apply, since "God cannot change".
Sigh... ok, almost done.
The Qu'ran was written covering a period roughly 600 years after Christ, and takes into account the old testament, and new testament. Think of it as separate levels. Jews believe in the first level, "Old testament". Christians believe in the first and second, "Old and New Testament". Muslims believe in the 1-3 levels, Old, New, and Qu'ran.
The Qu'ran states that Jesus was the herald of the true Messiah, Mohammad, and that the Messianic covenant was established through Mohammad. If they spoke Greek, they would probably have called him Mohammad Christ (since Christ is the Greek word for Messiah).
Summary. Whatever religion you are, Jew, Christian, Muslim, you have the same spiritual ancestry, you state you believe in the same monotheistic god (YHWH, Yahweh, Jehovah). God and Allah are titles (Allah means God). Christ and Messiah are titles (mean chosen one).
So, if we're all so similar, please stop killing each other and arguing that the other person is evil, it's ridiculous.
Source: Study, College, Reading the Torah, Qu'ran, and Bible, and bloody COMMON SENSE!
Leaving millions of dollars on the table so they can talk to an invisible ghost of a religion that doesn't have the best reputation. They are most likely brainwashed by a evil human being to do something like this. They must like the thought of virgin and a man only world
While they take their pilgrimage, maybe they should notice the women with noses, ears, and limbs cut off- that is if they can see their faces. It's barbaric and anybody that doesnt have a strong enough mind to see through that BS doesn't deserve to be in the US
In most societies it is reflects poorply of not just your education, but you family and others around to make comments about the things you clearly no nothing about. Alas! We have no such constraint in America. In fact, the media or news organizations seem to encourage ignorance in their readership. Before someone should be allowed to comment on a blog, there should be a quiz to asses the level of sophistication of the person responding or replying.
If everything I read on african-americans were from books published by the KKK I'd probably also believe that they were all violent and have nothing to do with peace. It's called being ignorant.
All of the early, i.e. first few centuries, wars of Islam had nothing to do with killing people who didn't believe in Islam. They were wars of conquest, meant to establish Islam as the governing religion of the world - governing, not the only religion. Jews and Christians were even governed by their own laws.
Christians, on the other hand, were infamous for mass slaughters and forced conversions, not just until the "1200's", but until at earliest, the 18th century (and quite arguably still until today - look at Bosnia and Kosovo). Didn't matter who - pagans living thousands of miles away on another continent, placid Jews who never lifted a finger in rebellion, Muslims who had lived with them as neighbours for centuries - even other Christians who had slightly different beliefs.
All Christians who did not believe in what the priests of the Council of Niceacame up with, hundreds of years after Jesus, were massacred. All of them, and any records of their own records of their beliefs wiped out. If you loved and believed Jesus but did not believe in the obvious (pagan-like) innovation of the Trinity, you were slaughtered.
No followers of any religion in the history of mankind have slaughtered as many people in the name of their religion as Christians. Any non-Christians who lived under their rule and refused to convert would either be killed or prosecuted, solely because of their beliefs, to the point of being driven out from their homes.
Wherever they went in the world, Christians sought to eliminate anyone and everyone who didn't agree with them. Eventually they even started believing that they were racially superior to everyone else, to the point of considering everyone else as animals.
So, you filthy, dirty hypocrites sitting on your arses seething with hate 24/7, stop slapping your own peoples' crimes onto other people. No people in the history of the world has done more damage to the world and humanity than your people, yet you have the audacity, or more likely the utter ignorance and gulibility, to attack Islam on the violence and wars in its history, which are incomparable to the atrocities your people continuously committed for over a thousand years.
If Muslims really acted the way you falsifiers claim, then there would be no Jews and Christians living in nearly every part of the Muslim world except the Arabian peninsula. There would be no pagan Hindus or Sikhs in India. And the Christians of Spain and half of Eastern Europe would have all been wiped before their descendants massacred their Muslim neighbours centuries later.
.
Oh No! Al Qaeda traning camps are harder than NFL spring training. Your shoes will be on fire.
Easy to find their "god" with those big paychecks they have already cashed. Found god , yea right. More like scared of getting hurt. Mecca yet, center of terrorism for the world.
How would you know? Have you been there? You should really try to educate yourself, rather than watch fox cable.
You are a cynical fool. How can you presume to know the motivations of these men? They set a priceless example for youth everywhere. Go back to that cozy spot under your rock.
You are a pos. Ignorant pos.
none of us have, since it's the most intolerant city in the world that won't even let you in if you're not their religion.
Some one sounds bitter. Sorry you were born in the wrong gene pool. Better luck next life dude, maybe you'll be reincarnated as a gazelle.
LisaP if you went their and spoke like that to a man they would cut off your nose. True story.
Google Islam nose cuttings. Such a peaceful religion. Oh and I hope you like rape too. Have fun on your pilgrimage
Setting aside the Bible, look at the recent history. The Muslims, as a group have been quite violent throughout their history, setting aside what the Koran says or doesn't say. And worse yet, the Moderate Muslims do nothing to quell the overwhelming tide of the voice of the Radical Islamist.
Because suicide bombings is way more evil than carpet bombings, right David L Rice? Sounds legit.
And you're wrong again on the moderate Muslims not doing anything about it. You know why you don't hear about moderate Muslims? Because you can't turn off the TV and get your news from a less sensational source.
Face it; peace isn't profitable. It's more exciting television when we're all killing each other, when we're the good guys and they're the bad guys...
Meanwhile in mid-western United States, I bet you haven't heard of the Christian Militia groups that the FBI has been bashing up as they plot roadside bombings and mass shootings and OH WHY DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?!
The one thing that separates the United States from the Arabic world is we have the resources to go after these terrorist groups under our own will. Arabic countries do not. That's because we invaded their lands 100 years ago and have been bleeding them dry ever since.
lrn2history
Oh, and you probably still think Iraqis hated us and wanted us to GTFO of their country.
Go talk to an actual Iraqi or former Iraqi resident. Chances are, you'll find he/she was very pro-American, and was sad and fearful when our soldiers left.
Oh and let's not forget Iran. Iran's public is the most pro-American public in that part of the world. Ironic, considering their government is the complete opposite. Then there's Pakistan, who we think is pro-USA, but their public hates us. It's the reverse of Iran.
@ Our Planet You said "Easy to find their "god" with those big paychecks they have already cashed. Found god , yea right. More like scared of getting hurt. Mecca yet, center of terrorism for the world."
That is the most ignorant thing I have ever heard anyone say. And what do you know of Mecca? From all the lies and the hatred you hear. You apparently don't know the truth so out of your mouth comes lies. Learn and do research what is the truth apparently you do not know.
As for the Brothers good for them to pass up the pay checks to sacrifice for their trip to Meccah to be faithful servants of God. One more thing there is only one God and he has many different names. Allah is one Yahweh Jehovah. Christianity was based on violence there were the crusades that if the people of that country like here in America the indians were killed or convert to being a christian in Islam it was the same thing so you can all say what you want. And I know that in Islam it promotes peace not violence the Extremist turns what they want to suit their needs and I can say in Christianity they do the same to the Bible to turn the words of the Bible to suit their needs. One more thing you blame Islam for things, wasn't Timothy McVeigh a so called Christian when he bombed the Alfred P Murrah building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma you all blame certain people but you do not look at what others do. Doesn't the Bible state that before you pluck the splinter out of your brothers eyes you should pluck the one out of your eye. And who are you to do the judging isn't it up to God to do the judging.
It's a shame they chose to waste their time and money like this, but that is what religion does to people who never developed the ability to think critically. It's just as ridiculous as the Christians who make their life's goal to visit the "Holy Land", when there is nothing holy about the land at all.
So far, this much I have learned: that every individual is on a different rung of the spiritual ladder. It takes awhile to understand that where ever you are is holy ground. It seems that for them, their priorities are in order and that is good. Who are we to judge?
Mmomdidnotraiseafool
They changed for the better, helping mankind is more important that playing football. And BTW YOU NEED A NAME CHANGE, it doesn't suit your outlook on life.
Mimi, very good post. The guys are on an exciting journey (both physically and spiritually) and both will have obstacles to overcome (as noted by some of the comments here) but ultimately the brothers will have richer lives both from their experiences and from being examples and educators. Hamza and Husain: May peace be with you!
To hell with you, you devil.
Oh, gee, John, I am just so insulted by your ridiculous post! I would imagine you also believe in and belong to one of the many foolish religions in this world, all of whom exist to take your money and subjugate you. Meanwhile, I enjoy life for what it is, and not as something to be endured before you go to "heaven" or "paradise" or whatever other ludicrous inventions the religious leaders have dreamt up. Actually, I used to be a Rangers fan, but was never a Devils fan. And hell is a place also dreamt up by the various religions' priests, imams, rabbis, etc.
Mymomdidnotraiseafool, you do not know what you are talking about. I am a Christian and I am not subjugated. The church does not exist to take my money. The money I give goes to maintain the church building and pay staff AND to provide for the needy, marginalized, hurt and sick. I shall pray for you and do pray for others like you that you will awaken to reality. Ignorance seems to be your guide.
"It's a shame they chose to waste their time and money like this,"
Would it be better if they choose to spend it on hookers and drugs and travel in entourages acting like thugs?
It would certainly be more entertaining.
MyMOM... your handle is correct your mother didn't raise a fool. It sounds like she raised someone who is self important and thinks they are the answer to everything.
Yes, mymomdidnotraiseafool, she didn't, She raised an ignoramus. A sign of true knowledge is acknowledging the vast amount of knowledge one has not attained. You sound like you think you have it all figured out. Good luck with that since it sounds like you are on your own.
Christians don't visit Israel as a religious pilgrimage. They visit Israel as tourists interested in Biblical history. Muslims have tried to erase any remnants of Christianity in Israel for a millennia but those historical evidences still exist.
Go find evidence that we evolved from slime. It takes a bigger leap of "faith" that Christianity.
Good Riddance to these clowns. They can take all of there so called brothers with them and stay where ever they are going to train for death and destruction. BYE BYE
wascigarman, I am far more alarmed by people like you than the Islamic bogeyman that keeps your ilk lathered up, salivating and hungry for a chance to rid the world of your perceived enemies. What makes these guys "clowns" any more than you for your silly comment and hateful judgment?
You are sick. Since you are not a believer of Religion then I understand you pos.
Yeah, and I'm sure they're all broken up over how you feel about them...yeah, right. They don't know you and wouldn't want to know you.
These young men made their way in the NFL but chose to travel to mecca and to educate people on Islam and its traditions, working with other young people and spreading peace and understanding. People do need to be educated so they understand other cultures and religions and respect them, but from the 4 comments from "Rednecks" already posted it will be a difficult path through miss-information, lies and bigotry.
The peace Corp is actually a useful and practical experience to spread good will, knowledge and practical methods for improving living standards. The same is true of Habitat for Humainity.
Islam is not a religion of peace nor does it express peace in the Koran, unless everybody becomes Muslim. An unbeliever is subject to subjugation, plunder or death if he resists. It's even more clear when you read the Hadith. The Jihad of Muhammad and his subsequent Calliphs reads like one big continuous war crime. I the early spread through the Levant, SE asia, Norht Africa, Spain and almost into France, the primary compulsion for the unbeliver to convert was the bloody sword of Jihad.
I suppose there are cherry picks of wisdom thrown into the mix, but I would hardly call Islam a religion of peace. That's a ruse and anybody who can read would know this. It's not the media to blame, it's clearly written in the doctrine. The Koran and Hadith are media too.
To speak the truth is hardly bigotry.
Charles: The bible isn't exactly daisies and rainbows. Not everyone follows their religious texts to the letter. Many Christians, including Catholics, do not take the bible literally. That's true for most muslims in the US...they are normal, everyday people, not terrorists. Your hate is borne of ignorance and that's sad...but it's the 'merican way! And you ARE a bigot.
I remember a story about a very tall Orthodox Jewish boy who turned down a chance to play professional basketball because he would have had to play on the Sabbath. No, I don't remember his name, because he never did join a professional team. That's the point.
if I'm not mistaken didn't Sandy Koufax refuse to pitch on the Jewish Sabbath, I may be wrong but it seems to be part of my memories of the Dodgers
His name has not been forgotten...it was known even before he was born...
Yes, he refused to pitch on Yom Kippur in the 1965 World series. Funny story: Don Drysdale got the start and got rocked by the Twins. When Walt Alston came out to take him out of the game, Drysdale reportedly said, "Bet you wish I was Jewish."
I haven't read anything about these guys suffering for the faith. Suffering is part of life, faith (soul, heart, mind, and body), and commnicating with others. I would like to hear from them after some soul suffering of body, then they will have a license to preach.
How do you know what they've suffered for their faith? They've been working since age 8; that sounds difficult enough to any sane person.
God knows what's in their hearts and it's not your place or mine to judge them.
Tell you what sgt Grunt, try doing 2-a-days in the middle of the Summer during NFL training camp, while not eating or drinking anything from sun-up to sun-down for 40 days and see how you make out! That @!$%# is hard and there are far better men than you that have been broken in far less time. These two brothers have endured this through the season at times and during training camp from High School, during their college years and during their NFL careers. Give it a try and see how long it takes you to fold like a cheap ass Wal-Mart lawn chair!
I think it is wonderful that two successful NFL players put their religion ahead of monetary gain. Their reward will be so great in the next life. I feel sorry for those of you dissing what they have done, slamming religion. You seem very unhappy to me. Few people put God ahead of all else. Those saying that Mecca is just another symbol - do you put up a Christmas tree, decorate for Halloween, Easter? Do you think any of that is any different? It's important to you. Mecca is important to them. I wish your hearts and souls peace this season.
WoW! I'm so glad that these men have been blessed with being able to going on a spiritual pilgrimage. They seem to have been able to do good with their time and money. Not many people can say the same. May God protect them.
NBC did not treat Tim Tebow as sympathetically as it treated these two "Muslim" athletes.
They don't pray in public or expect adulation, either. There's a lot in the New Testament about that sort of thing. Perhaps you'd know that if you read your Bible.
I'd have more respect for him if Mr Tebow prayed in the locker room rather than on the field.
Dude, if Tim Tebow quit football to concentrate on his religion, NBC would probably annoint him God. Tim Tebow has made a public spectacle of his religion, which your good book basically talks against.
He who hath walks on water needeth no sympathy. - Tim Tebow
Oh, I see, don't exercise your faith in Public. Would that be like, don't exercise your sexual preference in public, don't exercise your pro-abortion stance in public, don't exercise your anti-religion prefrence in public, don't exercise your anti-censorship positions in public, etc. Leftist seek to quiet all the voices that don't agree with them. Yes, leftist are purposeful descriminators. They do not have a tolerant bone in their bodies, unless you agree with them, then they will tolerate you.
Religion of peace? More like the religion of pieces...of bodies. Why is it the spread of the "peace of Islam" is always accompanied by copious amounts of blood, and chunks of flesh and bone? Any time those two want to see Islam's latest contributions to World peace and the betterment of all mankind, they can visit thereligionofpeace.com .
If those two are stupid enough to give up their freedom to devote themselves to the most intolerant, bigoted, woman hating, backwards reaching, murderous ideology to ever infest the planet, they deserve what they get.
No Islam, know peace.
No, they need to go to barenakedislam.com.
Drum, are you confusing Christianity and Islam?
The Qur'an gave/gives women the right to divorce, the husband must pay alimony if they have children, if they have no children he must pay spousal support for her. That was written approximately around 609CE or roughly 1,400 YEARS ago. When did the Catholic Church grant the right for women to divorce? My biological mother was excommunicated from the Catholic Church with her first divorce...... It seems that the Qur'an is/was actually quite fair about the equality of the sexes.
Fred: your HATE group site offers nothing but lies to those who are too lazy to pick up a Qur'an and judge it for themselves. Instead you listen to a rabid hater who cannot even give a semi-reasonable argument against Islam. If you had a Muslim neighbor and this website told you that you MUST kill him would you?
I assume you would not kill your neighbor- so don't blindly follow some guy who spouts hatred about Islam and Muslims for no clear reason. Read the Qur'an (Penguin Classics has a decent English version) and think for yourself. You may not like the book - but at least you would have a leg to stand on because you learned what you didn't like for yourself - not from lies on the internet.
They did a story last year about homeless familys and the children they had.....I watched young kids with bright smiles working hard in school and speaking years beyond their understanding.....that was inspirational.....that was heart wrenching.....that gave hope. Im not going to bash these guys because they worked hard to attain what they accomplished.....But to say they gave up everything for their religion is like saying I gave up my job after winning the lotto last week. When you sleep in a car everyday and have to beg for food and rise from that situation...thats saying something
The new testament is the new covenant! Try reading David Horowitz, "Did Mohammad Really Exist?"
did jesus?
Yeah he did, "Sting like a bee, float like a butterfly", Mohammad Ali, the greatest boxer E-V-E-R......
Heysus, on the other hand, might be illegal.
You're obviously insane. David horowitz is well known as a notorious hate activist par excellence. I suppose you'd also recommend a book written by a KKK member as good reading about african-american history.
There is no limit to what religious delusions will drive people to. If people would study the history of religion instead of their religous texts they would find that religion as Edison said "is bunk".
Oh, it's bunk alright. Christians are merely practicing paganism(although they don't seem to realize it). There were many dying/resurrecting/returning at the end of time 'sons of god' before jesus. Tammuz was one and he's mentioned in THEIR Old Testament. All religion was vomitted forth from Babylon. ALL OF IT.
OBOY! Bill , you just made somebodys hit list! And Tom we dont need any common sense statements this morning Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Your comments are senseless.
They chop peoples heads off daily in Saudi Arabia for breaking the rules of the religion. I would call that fanatical regardless of these two dimwits. Learn to think for yourself and question everything.
If they truly questioned everything, then they would not belong to any religion. Religion does not promote thought, only blind obedience.
You're assuming all muslims are extremists...they're not, just like not all christians protest against gays at military funerals.
I guess I MAY be able to understand their decision. Certainly, it is their right. I wonder if it may help more if they would have gone ahead and played and then donated their earnings to their faith when their bodies could not take the punishment anymore. I also know when you are young, the tendency is to make decisions that, at the time, are good , but later when you know more, find they are not. Heavens knows that I have.
Frankly, I could give a rats arse about these two who now have decided to join a cult.
Frankly, I doubt that you give a rats arse about anything in life, and that gives you automatic membership in the cult of the shiftless and ignorant.
All religions are cults, that have grown large.
One point in the article really threw me off... The 9/11 attacks had absolutely nothing to do with Islam... They were perpetrated by high-ranking American officials including George W. Bush & Dick Cheney.
Please stop spreading the misinformation that Muslims had anything to do w/ 9/11. At least 6 of the alleged attackers are alive and well in the middle east.
Anon, I hope you are joking.
I wish I was... but anyone who has done any research into the matter knows that this was most definitely an internal plot. Do some research and you'll see the truth. Your government is lying to you and a group of elites is willing to murder thousands of Americans in order to secure profits.
A good place to start is David Ray Griffin's book, "The New Pearl Harbor."
Sending a friend request to you Anonymous Economist.
Tinfoil alert! Whoot! Whoot! Whoot!
hmmmmm...........the movie Swordfish comes to mind. But all I could remember is Haley Berry's tits.
What an interesting theory.
It begs the question: what colour is the sky on your planet? Are there unicorns?
No, no unicorns, but it begs the theory if you were exposed to PHYSICS - or if you were there that day and HEARD explosions....let's not forget the great Chicago fire where steel framed buildings burned for over a WEEK but never collapsed.....
as long as there is poverty there will be religion
Don't forget ignorance, either.
And money to be made from suckers!
A hooker would beg to differ, money is made from sucking.
you are funny.
you have earned my respect!
the fallen state of humanity is subject to the sin of violence. cain was counseled by God himself about the origin of his murderous urge. violence comes from inside of man, those times God advocated the destruction of Israel and or Israel's enemies, were done as a exercise against sin, sin is cancer, it has to be cut out at times or it will destroy the host.mankind will often under the authority of God perpetrate great evil to achieve there own agenda.but this does not disqualify faith or the God that requires it of us all, it merely puts the responsibility on us to use wisdom and to be inquisitive when we encounter religious tenants.
Totally misguided... following a murderer and criminal is never good...
so I take it you refuse to vote #republicrat? Your government is made up almost exclusively of criminals & murderers
WHO GIVES A FLYING S H I T ! ! !
Charlie, did you go to Loser School or were you just born that way?
Charlie Fartman - you have repeated that same line 3 times, you joined NewsVine TODAY!
I assume you think it's funny what you say, but you are wasting other people's time and violating the NV CoH - which, if you read it this morning, instead of blindly accepting it, you would know your violation.
Blee-blee, blah-blah, bloh!
