Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say that their faith has experienced increased attention and scrutiny as one of their most prominent members, Mitt Romney, prepares to accept the Republican presidential nomination.
"His candidacy has shed some light on our faith and I get more questions now about being a Latter-day Saint than I did before. So I think that's a great thing, that's a positive thing," said Al Jackson.
Al Jackson's wife, Juleen, said that she hopes the country would accept an LDS president. The Jackson couple are raising their five kids in a traditional Mormon home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"I feel like even though I don't know Mitt Romney personally, I know what he does. He prays morning and night. He prays with his wife. He loves his children. He studies the scripture. I believe that probably motivates him a lot in some of the things he's done in the past and the course of his direction in the future," Juleen Jackson said.
Governor Romney has rarely spoken publicly about his faith while on the campaign trail. Recently, he allowed reporters to follow him to church services.
In an interview with NBC Nightly News on July 25, Romney talked about his faith with Brian Williams, saying that his commitment of giving 10 percent of his income and time to help others has "enriched" he and his wife's lives.
"I'm very proud of my heritage. Without question, I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some call that the Mormon Church, that's fine with me. I'll talk about my experiences in the Church. There's no question they've helped shape my perspective," Romney told Williams.
David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue and Azul Airlines, said that Romney's faith has prepared him to be a presidential candidate.
"I don't think there's been a person that's run for president of the United States that's spent more one-on-one time helping people, counseling people in kind of the 17 years or so of full-time service that Mitt had in talking one-on-one to his congregation trying to lift those people up," Neeleman said.
Neeleman has held fundraisers for Romney at his Connecticut home. The low-cost fundraisers have involved Neeleman's nine children cooking food that he buys at Costco.
"It's a very thrifty, Mormon, no-alcohol fundraiser and so he kind of likes those," Neeleman said.
While they might be thrifty, one of Neeleman's events raised over a million dollars for Romney's campaign.
"He personally when you sit with him or you talk to him or if you're in a small group setting or you listen to what he has to say, you don't get that impression at all that he's aloof and you know, really not caring. Maybe on TV he may come across as that and I think under the backdrop of kind of rich guy, but it's really not the case at all," Neeleman said.
Some members of the church, while not siding with Romney politically, say that he is in a tough position when it comes to discussing his religion.
"Mitt Romney is in a really difficult position when it comes to talking about his faith. I do not envy him," said Joanna Brooks, author of The Book of Mormon Girl. "There is widespread misunderstanding about Mormonism. I hope that will change this year as people get to know us a little better as human beings."
Brooks calls herself a feminist and while she disagrees with many of Romney's political philosophies, she says that he is a very "familiar figure" to her.
"Mitt Romney reminds me of so many of the Mormon men I know-- his sense of duty, he's a little bit buttoned-up, he's a little bit private, feels a lot of responsibility you can tell. So I have a lot of affections for Mitt Romney," Brooks said.
Mitch Mayne, an openly gay man who serves as executive secretary to the Church's San Francisco bishop, said that the attention swirling around Romney and the Mormon church has created a "Mormon moment."
Mayne, who considers himself a Democrat, says that Romney doesn't owe it to the public to talk about his religion.
"I don't care what he does on Sunday. What I care about is whether or not he can do the job. I'm not entirely convinced that Mitt Romney can do the job, but that's based on his credentials and his history. It's not based on his religion," Mayne said.
Even while Mayne doesn't believe Romney should be expected to talk about his religion any more than other candidates, he believes he and his fellow church members can seize the increased attention on their faith to dispel misunderstandings about the Church.
"If we as Mormons want to maximize what we call this Mormon moment and we want our, you know, our candidate to win, we as a faith need to step up and do exactly what we're doing with you today. And that is begin to talk about our faith, begin to open the robes, begin to, you know, dissolve some of the mystery and the myth around Mormonism and really portray who we are," Mayne said.
Editor's Note: Rock Center's hour-long look at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 'Mormon in America,' airs Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10pm/9c on NBC.

I invite all my friends to watch this report and maybe learn some new things and clear up some misconceptions regarding my (and Mitt Romney's) religion.
Sure, right, give me a break. It is very obvious that Mittens did not learn the values of the LDS. He has no compassion for the average human beings. The Catholic church agrees that the Romney/Ryan budget is not humane.
Fair enough, Ross, but I'm worried you may learn more about the history of your own church than those of us in the "former Mormon" community could ever learn about the religion we left behind.
As you are, we once were...
Now let's start with the utter absence of archaeological evidence for the Book of Mormon in the New World. Battles in which hundreds of thousands were killed left no evidence. And molecular biologists can't find Hebrew DNA haplotypes in modern Native Americans. And then there's the "Book of Abraham," some ordinary Egyptian funerary papyrus fragments that Joseph Smith claimed were written by the Biblical patriarch. And let's not forget the Danites or Smith's plural marriages to teenage girls... Or Brigham Young and the Mountain Meadows Masacre or other unpunished murders in mid-19th Century Utah territory... Or Post-Manifesto polygamy (D. Michael Quinn was ex-communicated for writing on that subject). Or the Smoot hearings...
Carry on..
When this cult indoctrinated my brothers and sisters, they did not mention anything about God once being a man, or that I could become like God, or that some of the members wore special underwear.
Seriously, the LDS 'church' is nothing more than a corporation/cult. The wacky ideas were invented about a hundred and fifty years ago. Mark Twain loved to make fun of them, because it was easy. They are one messed up people.
When my family moved from Salt Lake City back to the real world, I felt elated, like I was escaping prison. It is a very, very strange place.
I find some of the doctrinal beliefs of the LDS church to be rather strange and not conforming with standard biblical Christianity, but I can't imagine how anyone could be critical of the LDS lifestyle. If everyone observed their practices of family importance, charity, focus on personal accountability, and service the world would be a much better place. I have a lot of admiration for the discipline and resourcefulness I see in the lives of LDS people I know.
Psychotica: The 11th of the 13 ARTICLES of Faith that denote what the LDS religion believes, clearly states: We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dicates of our own concience, and ALLOW all men the SAME PRIVILEGE, let them worship HOW, WHERE, or WHAT they may. In simple terms "believe what you want."
PS: I'm a psych nurse, might I recommend some Risperdal or Zyprexa, or good ol' Haldol so you don't have to be psychotic.
I've read(somewhere) in A Mormon/LDS encyclical/platform: a goal is professed as favorable to control the U. S. House &/or Senate + Executive...or...as mush of Government as "they" possibly can. I only read scholarly material! This does NOT come from lite reading! It may have to do w/Mssrs B.Y. &/or Smith. If this is found to be correct...LOOK-OUT...!
Sorry Ross, the only religion left wing fascists recognize is socialism, anything else it blasphemy.
I checked out Wikipedia a few weeks back. At the time it said Mormonism had the same Abrahamic roots as Islam. And that they thought the world would end in Missouri. Today I checked and of course that stuff was removed. However it said it was one on the largest "Christian" religions in the USA and mentioned several times it used the Bible plus other texts which I don't believe Christianity does exactly.. Why the need to update the records. So it would look better for the election. That is what I think. If it was wrong why wasn't it corrected before the election. Christians follow Christ not someone who happened to create a religion along the way. Sorry.
Anybody truly interested in knowing the actual teachings of the Mormon Church should go to www.mormon.org
Everyday working mormons are VERY fine people. Wealthy mormons CAN BE as crooked as a dogs hind leg. I have witnessed the fact myself. Obvious to me Romney happens to be a dogs hind leg.
Phil - Try reading a little about political science before you embarrass yourself any further.
i agree bruce, the lds people i know have so many great family and community traits, but are primarily reserved for other mormon members. i've lived twenty years in a city heavily populated and run by mormons. they take care of their own, to the point of giving less wages to non mormons, stealing from non mormons, caring less for non mormons. there is occassionally an individual who's the exception to the rule. and though they endorse diversity, the mormon church services around the area, in a largely diverse culture, are 99.9% white. cunning, and unsavory business practices when dealing with non mormons. the average mormon male is richer than the average american male. they take care of their own. the mormon church is foaming at the mouth to see the power go their way. they are spending millions on commercials trying to legitimize their religion to you as pure christianity. this alone proves how desperate they are to see romney voted in as president. this would be a major victory for the mormon church, and the nepotism will only have just begun. they slowly infiltrate and take over. not many free thinkers in this religion. they are taught how to think, act, dress ad behave from their religious elders from the time they are born. and, the male still comes before the woman in this religion. he's the breadwinner first in a marriage, then the female can flourish. she has to have many babies. yes, they're more christian than scientologists, but i find it crazy to see one president before a jewish person or another catholic. sorry, their religion hasn't been around long enough for me to recognize it as a true religion, but more of a cult.
@ktlin....your visit to Wikipedia must have been in your drug-induced dreams.
mormons are required to have 5 kids, they keep 2 years worth of food in their basement, they think theyre the only ones going to heaven and nobody else is, women only go to heaven if they serve their men on earth and the men will pull them through, they get married at 18 before the woman is "set in her ways", they wear special underwear which the women are required to wear UNDER their bras. are you kidding? i dont want someone who believes that crap running my country.
@john in Moapa
Good clarification on dictates of own conscience.
However, as far as psychosis is concerned, the existence of numerous religions is one of the most visible indicators that mass psychosis exists. The belief in fantastic stories with no reasonable proof of veracity is a testament to humankind's gullibility and lack of critical thinking skills.
The ruler of this country should be minimally influenced by religion. It is a strong measure of a person's inability to reason clearly when they profess strong dedication to a religion.
Aside from Mr. Romney's absurd positions on economics, abortion, health care and disclosure, his strong ties to his religion are a dis-qualifier.
Know why you take two Mormons fishing, Cause if you take just one they drink all your beer.
Personally I don't know but I read the other day___that Romney gives to charity which is his mormon church thats charity !! Then the mormon church and doesn't do any charity work with the tax free money all they do is invest and buy more and more property. Oh yeah my wife and I was invited to tour the newly opened mormon temple near Washington. We went and was astonished at how elaborate it was and we thought just how much better use of the money if it had been used for chariable work.
How could anyone say mitt is not a compassionate person?
He donates 10% of his earnings to charity that goes to help the poor and those in need.
It so happens that the Mormon church has more humanitarian programs than any other religious organization on earth. The LDS church is #1 in the entire world for donations and welfare to the poor and those in need the just look it up...for instance, type in hurricane Katrina and Mormon church.
When was the last time YOU donated any of your money to charity?
Post 1.16; Wow you know everything. Maybe you should run for president.
Olrockcandy.....now I know where that old saying comes from "Beware of the dog with a crooked hind leg!"
What's this .Joe Smith had rocks that he could hold over earth and see through the rock to find gold?...The same magic rocks he held over Egyptian hieroglyphics and was able to decipher them!
Joe Smith was the name I used to use when I checked into motel room back in high school with my girlfriend! Always a number of my Smith relatives names on the register!....Abracadabra....sell you some magic rocks!!!! Right from my magic patio!
Romney is a Mormon bishop...you think there wouldn't be hell to pay if a catholic Bishop ran for president?...Oh he is a multimillionaire , don't talk about his religion...or his taxes, or his plan on rape, or his offshoring, ...welll dont talk about anything because Ann says so!
The ONLY thing that matters this election is...
ABO 2012!!
Vote Romney/Ryan...we've had enough of this clueless community organizer
If you really want to know what Mormons are like and what they truly believe and do on a daily basis and what is important to them,
I would encourage you to watch one of their General conference sessions.
listen to one of the talks. It doesn't matter what talk. You will soon see what is important to them and what they are like.
Go to LDS.org and click teachings and then general conference. and then view now.
ktlin,
"Christians follow Christ"
Mahatma Gandhi would have disagreed with you on that point. He said the reason he could not be a Christian, in spite of the fact that he admired Jesus and his teachings, was because the majority of Christians do not follow the teachings of Christ, and I agree with him. So if the majority of Christians don't follow the teaching of Christ, what difference does it make whether anyone is a Mormon and also does not follow the teachings of Christ? At least one good thing you have to admit about the Mormons is that they have a healthy lifestyle. They don't smoke, drink alcohol or caffeine and they emphasize sports. Aside from that, they're no better or worse than any other Christian denomination as far as I am concerned. Of course, that does not make me a Romney fan. I'm not, but it isn't because of his religion.
Joe Smith could see through the magic rocks....Timothy Leary could see through his hands.......same trip LDS/LSD...yep tripping with Mitten!
You are a bigot, and you have shown the world your lack of tolerance towards others. The fact 30 plus people agreed with you is disgusting and shameful. I'm not a Mormon, I'm actually Christian who disagrees with some of what the Mormons believe, but I respect their right to believe what they want, and they respect mine. Mormons are very good people and they should be treated with the same respect you would want.
Logic...let me try this one too like you!....haaarrrruuummmppphh...haaarrruummmpph.....good huh? How dare you sirs...haarrruuummppphh! Poppycock....Balderdash......you should respect the Mormon way of shipping American jobs overseas! You should respect Mormon ways of taking foodstamps from starving children and giving that money to Mitt so he can give it to other Mormons so they can buy companies to ship those jobs overseas, then take that money you took from starving children and hide it offshore. Yes They deserve respect!....HORSE HOCKEY!
watch you tube video...The creation of mormonism...
britney - Thanks for the laugh! My children are an absolute joy to me, and though I do happen to have 5 (and may have more) that is far from required or even the norm in the LDS church. I think they're advising members to have only one year of food storage, and there are many reasons why that would be a good idea for everyone - i.e. economy, unemployment rates, etc.
I believe every person on this earth who lives their beliefs to the best of their ability is going to heaven. God is the judge.
If I make a covenant/marriage vow to love and serve my husband and don't keep that covenant, I wouldn't expect to get into heaven. Same goes for my husband. He has covenanted to honor and serve me as well, and won't get to heaven without me. What a wonderful belief to strengthen the home and family!
I got married at 29. Many of our girls do choose to get married young, and that is not discouraged. I would rather see an 18 year old chosing to make eternal covenants with a spouse, before starting to raise hardworking, service oriented children, than an unwed 18 year old with two small children on welfare. (Now, granted, both those scenarios happen in and out of the Mormon church.)
As for the special underwear - Garments, as we choose to call them, are worn to remind us of our covenants and to encourage modesty. Their power lies in their ability to keep us on the strait and narrow. And whether we choose to wear them under or over our bra should be no concern of yours, as long as we are comfortable.
Thanks again for the laugh!
American, and out of the millions of dollars of dollars that the Mormon Church receives a paltry 7% is spent on humanitarian aid. I'd suggest you read the attached article.
reeblite - I feel your pain! Me too!
http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-07-10/how-the-mormons-make-money#p5
mormons took native american children away from their parents...
Mormon bashing for politcal gain. Is there nothing the left won't stoop to? Lets see more articles about Rev. Jeremiah Wright's enlightened perspectives on white people and how they influenced the current presdent who seeks re-election. How about it? Oh, but that would be racist, right?
FIRST OFF - Mormons believe they are THE ONE TRUE RELIGION, ALL others are tools of the Devil
2nd - the words used to LURE the unsuspecting & uneducated into their fold are different & change once you have "been accepted" AND "accepted" is far different than just becoming a member .
3rd - The CoLDS CO-OPTED the Christian Bible, modified it & edited it to conform the the CoLDS doctrine & THEN they claim "Christianity" because they "used" the same Bible .
4th - in the 1800's while venturing to Utah, they were repeatedly cornered & asked "Who is your Savior"... if they answered Joe Smith, they were shot if they answered Jesus they weren't, Joe Smith IS their MESSIAH not Jesus...they EQUIVOCATED (lied) to keep from being murdered...that device became CoLDS doctrine..it is OK to LIE to non Mormons because they are tools of the Devil ..!
They are one crazy breed of lying wanna-be "Christians" who refuse to mingle with non Mormons (hence UTAH) .
Take a trip to Northern AZ, stop for gas & notice how you are treated by the Mormon towns & their Police.... outsiders are SHUNNED & not spoken to especially by ANY children or WOMEN.... polygamy is RAMPANT up there & even the Federal Government is afraid to clean up the mess.... it took 20 years before they had the guts & guns to go after Bishop Warren Jeffs a serial child molester, protected by the CoLDS Church all that time !
AND THEN there is THIS... a regular occurrence in Utah...
"SYRACUSE — An LDS Primary teacher was accused of molesting young girls in his class during church and at his home.
Aaron Marcos Montoya, 32, who is also a Salt Lake County sheriff's officer, was charged in 2nd District Court with five counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The charges included the aggravated enhancement because Montoya was in a position of trust in his church duties.
Syracuse police Sgt. Mark Sessions said ALL of the victims were girls either 5 or 6 years old "
The guy is 32, and he has been hidden within the church all this time & yet never once in the past 12 years was he caught OR suspected, because they cover for each other .
Bishop WIllard, his church & his 16 years run for POTUS are ALL full of holes, mystery & equivocations....and now HE wants us to LIKE him and VOTE for him ?
lol, I love it when people use wikipedia for research.... anyone who has been to college (or even high school) knows it is not a reputable source for facts....Just sayin......... ask any professor/teacher if you can use wikipedia as a source for some scholarly work, or any paper really, and you will get an instantaneous NO.....
starfalling.....Yes Romney is a Mormon....Obama (and you) are a Moron! End of story. And what is your messiahs true religion? Jeremy Wrights hate America & it's white people preaching? or Christian hating Islam/Muslim faith? What a choice.
Now go check the mail to see if your monthly check from the community organ-grinder odumbo came.
Romney/Ryan 2012 to save America!!
I don't hear any religious people bragging about how much they give to their church and expect a pat on the back like Romney does. Millions of Americans give 10% to their church. And I have NEVER heard any Christian refer to his check to the church as a tax. He claims he has never paid less than 13% in taxes but actually a 20% tax rate when he adds those donations in. I find that disgusting.

MITTS FINANCES BROKEN WIDE OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Bain Files: Inside Mitt Romney’s Tax-Dodging Cayman Schemes
John Cook
Mitt Romney's $250 million fortune is largely a black hole: Aside from the meager and vague disclosures he has filed under federal and Massachusetts laws, and the two years of partial tax returns (one filed and another provisional) he has released, there is almost no data on precisely what his vast holdings consist of, or what vehicles he has used to escape taxes on his income. Gawker has obtained a massive cache of confidential financial documents that shed a great deal of light on those finances, and on the tax-dodging tricks available to the hyper-rich that he has used to keep his effective tax rate at roughly 13% over the last decade.
Today, we are publishing more than 950 pages of internal audits, financial statements, and private investor letters for 21 cryptically named entities in which Romney had invested—at minimum—more than $10 million as of 2011 (that number is based on the low end of ranges he has disclosed—the true number is almost certainly significantly higher). Almost all of them are affiliated with Bain Capital, the secretive private equity firm Romney co-founded in 1984 and ran until his departure in 1999 (or 2002, depending on whom you ask). Many of them are offshore funds based in the Cayman Islands. Together, they reveal the mind-numbing, maze-like, and deeply opaque complexity with which Romney has handled his wealth, the exotic tax-avoidance schemes available only to the preposterously wealthy that benefit him, the unlikely (for a right-wing religious Mormon) places that his money has ended up, and the deeply hypocritical distance between his own criticisms of Obama's fiscal approach and his money managers' embrace of those same policies. They also show that some of the investments that Romney has always described as part of his retirement package at Bain weren't made until years after he left the company.
Bain isn't a company so much as an intricate suite of steadily proliferating inter-related holding companies and limited partnerships, some based in Delaware and others in the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and elsewhere, designed to collectively house roughly $66 billion in wealth in its many crevices and chambers. When Romney left in 1999, he and his wife retained significant investments in many of those Bain vehicles—he claims they are "passive investments" and that they are managed in a blind trust (though the trustee isn't blind enough to meet federal standards of independence). But aside from disparate snippets of information contained in his federal and Massachusetts financial disclosure forms, his 2010 tax returns, and SEC filings, the nature of those investments has been obfuscated by design.
When he disclosed his finances to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in 2007, Romney took care to publish the underlying holdings of many funds he invested with—after disclosing his $1 million-plus stake in "GS 2002 Exchange Place Fund LP," for instance, he listed six pages of individual equities the fund held, from Panera Bread Co. to Tribune Co. But when it came to the Bain investments, he simply listed the value of his investments in odd-sounding entities like "Sankaty High Yield Partners II LP" with no indication of what was inside. In an accompanying note, he claimed that he had tried and failed to get the information: "The filer has requested information about the underlying holdings of these funds and values and income amounts for these underlying holdings. However, the fund managers have informed the filer in writing that this information is confidential and proprietary, and has declined to provide such information."
That information—for Sankaty and 20 other funds—is now available here, in the form of 48 documents totaling more than 950 pages. They consist predominantly of confidential internal audited financial statements from 2008, 2009, and 2010, as well as investor letters from the same period, for Bain entities that Romney has previously disclosed owning an interest it. Owing to the timeframe—during and after the catastrophic economic meltdown of 2008—some of the investments show substantial losses. One limited partnership had even entered into liquidation as of October 2008 after failing to meet certain payments owed to partners. Others show astronomical gains.
The documents are exceedingly complicated. We don't pretend to be qualified to decode them in full, which is why we are posting them here for readers to help evaluate—please leave your thoughts in the discussion below. We asked an attorney who specializes in complex offshore corporate transactions, including ones involving Cayman Island entities, to review them and help us understand them. (We also asked the Romney campaign. It hasn't responded yet.) The full set can be read here.
justme227 - you're correct and I remember when they did that and the repercussions it had on the Tribes. That was just one of their sick fiascos of the past.
Hopefully the media will not be Mormanophobic
Why aren't anyone of you Mormon criticizing lib's attacking the Muslim Religion? They want to KILL the Christians and Infidels.....meaning YOU! Are you afraid to lose your head? Hypocrites!!
Oh and you democrats.....If your beloved party consistently campaigns for the "underdog" or the "less fortunate "impoverished citizens", why do we still have hunger? Why do the poor keep getting poorer? Wake up and realize it's a game. They campaign to the minorities to get in office, then they forget about them once in. Stop your ignorance and wake up!
Romney/Ryan 2012
unotail... Right you are: "Save America." For themselves. I don't care what religion a person is as long as they keep it out of my face. Actually, there are only two things I don't like about "Mitt" Romney; his face.
Just Curious! How come there's absolutely No Christian Crosses (the Ultimate symbol of beleif in Jesus Christ) on any Mormon church steeple?
How come? What's up there?
Maybe it's an ISLAMIC CRESCENT MOON?
It's like Romney's hidden Tax Returns, we don't know!
Can somebody tell me what up there on a Mormon Church steeple.
Until I hear otherwise, I'm going to assume it could be an Islamic Crescent Moon.
ps. Is the Mormon Church where Mitt Romney learned to steal the Working Man's Pension Fund? and Not pay Taxes for over 10 years while possibly committing a Felony? and how to Laundry that ill-gotten Loot through his phony Cayman Island Shell companies, or how to RETIRE RETROACTIVELY as CEO from Bain Capital, while still collecting Millions of Dollars, and how to take his wife's Olympic Show Horse of as a phony Tax write-off?
Wow! All of the above does not sound very "Manly", now does it?
All Hail Obama! Ruler, Master, and Overlord of all you Republicans and crazy-wacko Teabaggers for the Next four (yes! 4) very Long years!
Ain' Life grand?
ps. Is this a Great post, or what?
The lack of crosses/crucifixes on the meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may be one reason that many believe we, "Mormons" are not Christian. (Apparently they take no time to note the name of our Church which exists on all of our church buildings.) Quite simply the reasons we don't display the cross are these: 1. Our message, the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that He lives! He overcame sin and death and oppression- things that are all represented in the cross. We do use pictures of Christ on the cross when we teach lessons about His earthly ministry and his suffering and his atonement for our sins.
and 2.) The symbol of our religion, should be our lives. (We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we daily need to check ourselves to see if we are striving to live as he would have us live.) It isn't as easy as hanging a cross around our necks. Even the garments which have been referred to are not meant to set us apart in this world, perhaps that is why they are worn under our clothing. They are seen only by each individual, himself/herself. They remind me that ultimately I am accountable before God. Just me and the Savior and Heavenly Father.
He is indeed the focus of the Church. It is His church, after all, as is proclaimed again and again in the sign on every church building. We do not believe that we are the only followers of Christ. For sure not. And we believe that through the atonement of Christ "all mankind" may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.
Thanks for asking.
You'd be hard pressed to find any church that didn't deny the legitimacy of other religions and consider other religions to be "heretical cults". The only exceptions are a handful of ecumenical religions like Ba'hai.
Correction - the same Abrahamic roots as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. All three groups have so much history in common, maybe that's why they hate each other so much. There is no more reviled heretic as one who has it "almost but not quite right".
Such a load of mis-information! There is no "5 kid" requirement, there is no restriction on birth control for married couples, they can have as many or as few children as they want. However, they are subtly encouraged to have large families as a way of growing the church.
Mormons are strongly encouraged but not required to keep a 2 year supply of food on hand for some vague future calamity. That's been going on for almost a century, and still no calamity.
The Mormon heaven is a complicated idea, with the most exalted level reserved for faithful members only, but it does have heavenly levels for righteous people of other faiths, and women do not require a man to enter. It even allows unbelievers to hear their gospel and join the church in the afterlife - that's the reason for their "baptisms for the dead" rituals.
There is no set age to get married, either, the only restriction are the legal minimum age requirements set by the Government, not the Church. Since most Mormon men are expected to go on a 2 year mission when they turn 18, there are very few who get married before age 21.
Yes, adult members who have performed their temple rituals are supposed to wear specially marked underwear to remind them of their sacred vows. I've never inquired as to how they wear their underwear, it seems a bit too personal. I have seen them hanging on the clothesline, and trust me - there is absolutely nothing sexy about them, they are as plain and boring as Mormons themselves.
I can think of plenty of good reasons to not vote for Romney, his religion, silly as it is, isn't one of them.
RepublicansforObama....
Beacuse their religion comes way before Christianity. They believe in their "seer stones" more than Christ.
Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church was a Mason. Their first temple in Salt Lake City is covered with Masonic symbols. They created an "Eagle Gate" next to Brigham Young's Lion House (where his 27 wives lived) that has a pentagram on it. The majority of Mormons have no clue what the background of their religion is.
http://mormonoutreach.org/pagan_and_occult_symbols.php
As an Atheist, I have no qualms about criticizing religions when they deserve it, and that included Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Hmm, seems to me it isn't just Muslims that want to kill infidels, history has seen plenty of Christian and Jewish killing of infidels, too. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Have you got some sort of birth defect that keeps you from looking up? Unlike Mitt's tax returns, steeples are not concealed and are in plain view of the public. As a lot of people could tell you, Mormon churches (open to the public) usually have a plain straight pointed steeple that doubles as a lightning rod, like a lot of New England Protestant churches do. Mormon temples (reserved for faithful members only) have one or more spires, one of which is topped by an "Angel Moroni blowing a trumpet" sculpture. No "crescent", no Islamic symbols at all, and that Moroni sculpture would be considered wicked idolatry to Muslims.
Mormons de-emphasize the cross in order to emphasize the forgiveness, redemption, and salvation in Christ. Mormons don't believe in "Original Sin", but they do believe in redemption and forgiveness for ones own sins through Christ.
The only connection between Islam and Mormonism is the same historical connection that Islam has to all other Judeo-Christian religions.
Someone mentioned Smith's marriage to multiple teenage girls - which seems to justify his involvement in the religion, if not anyone else's.
But will all that happy, if immoral and illegal, sex really cause Jesus to appear in Pennsylvania?
Georgie837 ....
Because NOBODY of the Muslim faith is running for President.
(And if you want to go all Cain and Abel on me ... bring it on . . . . . )
Mormons are cult members and it is frightening that one is perhaps going to become president of the most powerful country on earth. Mittens is NOT free to make decisions about the country on his own, it is written that Mormons MUST do as the Mormon Bishops declare - yes, even if Mittens is president. So, basically the US executive branch will be run by a crazy religious cult if @!$%# Romney becomes president!
Cue the religious bigotry from the intolerant left!!!
Dianne, you're absolutely correct. And for those of you who don't know the entire LDS religion is steeped in Freemasonry. Check out ANY temple...all of the architecture and symbolism is Masonic. The symbols on the Temple garments... also Masonic. The Temple Ritual... MASONIC. The avg Mormon who never goes to the Temple has absolutely no clue of this just as lower degree Masons have no clue that Masonry is actually Illuminati Satanism. In the Temple members must recite a Masonic blood oath, complete with passwords, secret handshakes, and a BLOOD oath to never reveal what goes on . The oath of obedience and devotion though is NOT made to god... it's made to BAPHOMET.... Lucifer.
If you're interested in seeing the entire ceremony for yourself go to YouTube and watch the movies The God Makers Pt 1 and 2.
What the avg person doesn't know is that the LDS is really an EXTREMELY WEALTHY CORPORATION that has it's hands into everything imaginable. They are second in wealth only to the Vatican. They have been infiltrating every facet of gov't , banking, media, commerce and they absolutely have their eye on the White House and Congress.
I am an EX-Mormon and I can tell you... they can claim all they want from hell to high water that they're Christians but they ARE NOT. Their entire dogma is absolutely contrary to Christianity. The entire Book of Mormon has been debunked numerous times. There is absolutely ZERO evidence to support ANY of its claims. If you want to know the REAL TRUTH about Mormons... ask an EX-MORMON. Going to the CHurch website will only provide you with propaganda and apologetics. Remember.. these are CULT MEMBERS who have been very heavily indoctrinated from birth and converts are lied to for YEARS before they find out what the church REALLY believes . I escaped after about 5 yrs when I found out about the Temple ceremony, the garments and that this "religion" is really nothing but FREEMASONRY posing as CHRISTIANITY.
After watching the NBC story on Mormonism, I was quite surprised to find out about all of the volunteerism and charity work that's required from its members. Some of the perks for being a Mormon are free food and other free assistance programs. Don't we call that Socialism in this country?
"If we as Mormons want to maximize what we call this Mormon moment..."
I'm sorry, but you'll all have to wait in line for Mr. Obama's special opportunities for Black education.
Honest Dave,
Yes you theoretically could call it socialism. But it is a volunteer socialism where each person decides what they will contribute whether it is money from fast offerings or after receiving the food, providing service as requested.
Socialism by the government (or what we currently have) is far from the socialism you describe. Currently we have to pay taxes. There is no requirement for those that are able and receive assistance to provide service. Huge difference.
Georgie, georgie, georgie... Surely you know Democrats and liberals at large are perpetually lambasted for trying, and sometimes succeeding, in passing "wasteful government spending" (translation: anything that takes money from "me"). You do realize their are also people in government who work to block that, right? You do realize people like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are working to take money from the poor and middle class to give MORE to the uber rich, right? That's not really a secret, or conjecture, that's strictly by accounting. Sure, there are corrupt, wealthy Democrats, but to paint them as in equal in number and level as Republicans is laughable. One party wants to take more of YOUR money to give it to the rich, the other party wants to take more money from the rich to fund everything government does.
Just one more attempt by the radical left to smear Romney, this time by attacking his religious affiliation. Consider that we have never had a president (or vice president, for that matter) that didn't subscribe to one religion or another. It was never a problem except now the left want's to try to make it a problem. Unfortunately, the gullible may buy into it.
Wet Willy,
"It was never a problem except now the left want's to try to make it a problem."
That is not true. John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Catholicism was very much a factor during his campaign for the presidency. He was the first Catholic president we had ever had, and many people did not trust electing a Catholic to the presidency. They were afraid that he would make the United States into a servant of the Vatican. He did become president, and, needless to say, the United States did not become a servant of the Vatican. The same is true of Romney now. We have never had a Mormon president before, and many people are again afraid of what that would mean. I don't really think it has anything to do with left vs. right. People often have fears that later prove to have been unfounded.
Lived in Utah for 6 years and watched the 'special' last night. VERY one-sided view (which I expected). No discussions of 'jack' Mormons, no discussions about the high rate of use/abuse of anti-depressants specifically among Mormon women, no conversations about 'temple recommends' and how they are revoked if you don't pay your 10%, etc., etc..
Let America see this side then draw their conclusions.
Mickey 1.60
You are correct. I didn't immediately remember this because the attempt to portray Kennedy as someone that would adopt a subservient posture taking orders from the Vatican failed miserably, becoming merely a small footnote in history. Although, I suspect then as today, there were/are a cadre of gullible willing to believe such tripe.
However, this has everything to do with the left that is orchestrating this attempted smear campaign just as it was the right doing the same thing in 1960.
John in Moapa, LogicReguired, unoitall, you are all suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
Wet Willy,
"However, this has everything to do with the left that is orchestrating this attempted smear campaign just as it was the right doing the same thing in 1960."
You may be right about that in this time of such animosity between the left and the right in this country. But I think we Americans have always been kind of suspicious of anything we are not familiar with. I know that Santorum was attacked by many on the left quite a bit because of his Catholicism when he was running, and he would have been the second; not the first Catholic president if he had made it, but I think the reason for that was just because we have so many atheists now who don't like any kind of religion at all. Personally, I don't think a man's religious beliefs are of any importance as far as holding a political office is concerned. He could be a member of the United Church of Animist Hottentots for all I care. It's how he performs when he is in office that matters.
Having read the history of the Mormon's and their journey on the run being kicked out of Indiana and every state they tried to stay in to finally find themselves among the Ute people of what is now called Utah provides for some interesting reading. Not only have the Mormon's subscribed to the very ludicrous notion of a "lost tribe" to which they identified as the American Indians but they go as far to attack and murder an entire wagon train of people and then blame on of their lost tribes as the culprits.
There has been historical records of murder, mayhem and out and out dissent not to mention polygamy but yet not one iota of self attonement among Smith's followers. While living in Nevada in the Geat Basin doing my graduate research I was inundated by these young men coming to my home everyday trying to spread the word and recruit me over the Mormonism. Not once did these little robots ever consider I had no interest not to mention they were invading my space. I had to make a sign and post it in front of my rented apartment to let them know I would no longer tolerate their rhetoric.
I have nothing but contempt for a cult that speaks to integrity and self responsibility and yet to never hear an apology or admission of their transgressions against others. How could anyone take these people serious? I find them to be big bags of wind and full of themselves. I hope the people of this country can see through this group of cultists. What is next the Mormon Church reinstates polygamy? LMFAO!
Church and state should not mix. The Latter Day Saints is American style religion on steroids. Akin to Scienetology.
That is why he knows it would be a political disaster to discuss it.
In what way is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints even remotely similar to Scientology?
Err .... Really? The con man Smith and Hubbard have a LOT in common.
...and this is why people should watch this.
Here you go "read," and sorry, I read Mark Twain on the BOM first... Now would you care to address the subject of ancient Hebrews in North America or the "curse" put on the Lamanites (with the Etch-a-Sketch crowd scrambling to erase "white-and-delightsome" and substitute "pure-and-delightsome")? L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology was a science fiction writer, and the Book of Mormon was "heroic fiction" for its time.

Steven Hassan is one of the foremost authories on toxic religious cults in the world today (I've met him, and he possesses a world class intellect). This piece addresses the "Fundamentalist Mormons" who followed splinter groups like Warren Jeffs. Of course LDS leader Gordon B. Hinckley said there was no such thing as "Fundamentalist Mormons," but the facts are they've existed under-the-radar for generations in Utah, and they bear more of a resemblance to the Church of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young than the modern church.
And here's Hassan's BITE model being applied to the contemporary church. No one would suggest the modern organization is as extreme as its 19th century ancestor, but it is still far more a cult than a religious fellowship.

Addendum: Scientology has Tom Cruise. Mormonism has Glenn Beck...
If you've been to Salt Lake City, you would see how much the Mormons want to govern people's lives.
I have been to Salt Lake. Seemed like just any other city in America. What differences are you refering to?
I was there a few years ago and their are certainly mormon symbols adorning many of the government buildings that I saw. However, I also understand that many of the buildings are quite old and those symbols may have been there for 100 years. I also understand the Utah has a high percentage of LDS population, so it's not irrational that a lot of people in public office are LDS members. As for the degree to which their faith becomes the basis for their governing, I really don't have a clue. I do know that people govern out of who they are, so someone with a strict LDS leaning is probably going to govern very differently than someone with a strong athiest belief. But in both cases, they are governing out of their religious beliefs (or lack thereof).
Mormons in utah....Olympics given to Utah, Mittster grabbed 1.5 billion bailout dollars for Utah to put on Olympics.........ROMNEY DESTROYS ALL RECORDS OF HIM CONCERNING OLYMPICS> ...WHY? Where did that 1.5 billion bailout money go?
starsailing...
You really want to go there...really? Let's talk about all the information about your savior that is sealed...hmmmm, now isn't your argument something like "the pot calling the kettle black"?
Oh, that's right...when it comes to Barry Soerto, nothing sticks...
My grandfather Ole had a religious experience that affected our family for over a hundred years now.
Ole was walking up the trail to Camp Coldwater spring. He just came from one of the grog shops across the river. He looked at the spring and saw Sven standing in the spring with a line of people next to the spring. Ole saw Sven grab one of the people, dunked him under the water, and shouted something to the man, and the man climbed out. Sven grabbed another man, did same thing. So Ole was curious as to what was going on and stood in line. Next thing he knows, Sven grabs him and dunks Oles head under water and shouts to him, "Did you find Jesus?" Ole replied ,"No I didn't." Sven looks at him sternly and grabs Ole again, dunks his head under water, pulls him out , and once more says,"Did you find Jesus?". Ole replies again, "No I didn't". Sven really upset now, grabs Ole, dunks his head under water for about a minute, pulls him up and yells at Ole saying, DID YOU FIND JESUS?" Ole coughing and sputtering, looks and Sven and yells back, "NO I DIDN"T! ARE YOU SURE THIS IS WHERE HE FELL IN?"
Attacking Mormons is just another desperate attempt by the media and the left to continue their attack campiagn. I man who sat in a church that spewed anti -semitic hate, not to mention all the other hateful things Rev. Wright preached weekly gets a pass, but Romney and Mormons get attack because of they're a minority religion in America that many don't understand? Typical of Chicago politics.
I have lived around Mormons since the late 80's. Do not want one for president. If you want this country run by the Mormons, you have no idea what you are getting yourselves into. They have been plotting the take over of the US for decades. Women's rights? Forget about it. The Constitution? Forget about it. The country will be run by only those who have and to hell with the rest of us. The taxes will go up because Mitt belongs to a religion that once demanded 1/3 of everyones pay or 1/3 their time dedicated to the church. Don't know how much they demand now, but your taxes will go to support the Mormon way of life, not have any of the services you now enjoy that the US Government provides. Mormons are for Mormons only....white Mormons.
would like to know how much they own in assets...and how many members world wide...most of the pacific is mormon....
i mean south pacific
Why doesn't anybody bring up the fact that Harry Reed is also a Mormon? Is it because he is a liberal? Romney and Reed share the same religion yet have very different political views, so I would conclude that it is possible that they use their religion go influence their values but choose to follow those beliefs in different ways. Which gives them both very different political views.
Bruce,
"I also understand that many of the buildings are quite old and those symbols may have been there for 100 years. I also understand the Utah has a high percentage of LDS population, so it's not irrational that a lot of people in public office are LDS members."
I agree. And I wonder how many Americans are aware of the important role the Mormons played in the settling of the West. Many of the wagon trains heading westward in the early 1800's were filled with Mormons who were fleeing from persecution in the East. A lot of people who consider themselves orthodox Christians don't like Mormons, but Mormons are as American as Mom and apple pie. Mormonism is one of a number of religions of American origin.
justme ... just for you ..
http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-07-10/how-the-mormons-make-money#p5
Having lived out west for most of my life, while I am not Mormon, I have known many Mormons. If they are a cult, they are the most decent, civil, law abiding, charitable, clean living cult on planet earth. That the political left has to stoop so low as to try and make them sound like weirdos to gain some small advantage for Obama is truly digusting but Chicgo style gutter politics is what you get with Obama and media friends.
Chemd...why there is no problem about Reid being a mormon?...Romney takes from the poor, the middle class and other rich, gives some to his church and keeps the rest. Reid takes back what the Romnies and rich stole, gives it back to rightful owners and gives part of his wages to the church...BIG difference...Romney is a tax dodging thief who steals American jobs and sell them overseas, Reid pays his taxes and tries to bring those stolen jobs back to America!
Gawd starsailing...
Barry Soerto has sure got you by the balls...
Mickey-1983943
Mormons stole property of the Missouri citizens and were forced
out of the state. Then the Mormons went to Illinois and started a city called Nauvoo. Now Nauvoo was except from state law for
some reason. The Mormons had a militia equal to the federal militia at that
time. Mormons had new scam! This time they borrowed money the citizens of
Illinois and didn’t pay it back. Then John Smith was chasing women and offended
the wife of newspaper publisher in Nauvoo. John had the building that housed
the newspaper burned. John was embarrassing the Mormons so Brigham Young had John Smith killed while he was in jail. Smith thought the Mormon militia would save him. Then the Mormons were kicked out of Illinois also.
Ron,
What is your source for that information? I don't like Romney, either, and would not vote for him, but it is not because of his religion. I have known Mormons personally, and some were very good people while others were flaming @!$%#s. But I don't generalize about people based on their race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or any such other irrelevant characteristics. I judge people as individuals, and by how they treat me. To do otherwise is just stereotyping. Even if Mormons did the things you claim they did, it does not make every Mormon a bad person.
Actually if you take into account that the church uses its money for welfare assistance (members and non-members), missionary efforts, disaster relief (pick a disaster and see if the LDS church was present with significant contributions, but you may not find becasue they don't brag, they do what is right regardless of reward or lack thereof), building maintenance and new building projects, and a plethora of other chartiable and non-profit functions,..... it is easy to look at the money coming in, but does anyone look where it goes? What does it do? Or is it easier to cry foul about any money coming in, and ignore how it is used (even businesses have to use income for overhead costs and the other costs of doing business)?
Oh yeah, they also have a lay clergy..... no one is paid for their service to their fellow members......Basically the money the church has comes from its members, freely given (not forced) and it is used for the betterment of the members and those the church comes in contact with.....at least that is my experience......
I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). I try to live my belief's the best I can. We are looked at by some as strange because we are encouraged not to drink, smoke, use illegal drugs and we are taught to spend quality time with our families. I have many, many friends that are not members of my church and love them dearly. I have nothing but respect for their belief's and appreciate their friendships. I am a Democrat, and no, not a liberal. Mitt Romney is his own person and will have to live by whatever political position he takes. I for one will not be voting for him. I do have respect for the fact that he is a good family man and loves his family but, his idea's and polocies are no different than George Bush. Privitizing Social Security and Vouchers for Medicare are wrong. I see nothing that Mitt or Ryan will do if elected that will pull us from the mess the Republicans did to our economy. What is truly needed people is to break the deadlock in the House by getting rid of Republicans. Let President obama have the senate and the house and with out a doubt the economy will get better. He has faced nothing but gridlock from the Republicans from almost the get go, and this has got to stop. When the Republicans all sign on the dotted line that they promise not to raise taxes on the wealthy or they know they are finished as a politician then their time must come to an end. Please do not elect Romney and Ryan or you can expect the rich to get richer, the middle and poor class to get poorer, and the retired or to be retired to get hosed on Social Security and Medicare. Obama/Biden 2012
cankersore,
Who exactly is this Barry Soerto you keep screeching about. It can't be the 6 year old kid that was given his stepfathers name to go along with the nickname his grandfather gave him, is it? That's a pretty pathetic attempt at, what exactly are you attempting to say?
Actually Michael...
That is not why you are viewed by some as strange. These are actually nice things to do regardless of whether or not a religion encourages these behaviors.
What I, and others, view as strange is this:
1. How did so many people get duped by an obvious conman like Joseph Smith?
2. How did so many people continue to follow Brigham Young despite the fact that he was a controlling, manipulating man who liked young girls and didn't have any problems with having a huge number of wives.
3. Why do woman continue to follow the Mormon faith when they're told that their ascension into Heaven isn't determined by God, but by their fidelity, faith, and loyalty to their husbands?
4. Why aren't more people protesting Romney's involvement with the Mormon church when Mormonism is an obvious cult, should not have achieved the status of an actual religious faith, and preaches that every person on this planet who is not a Mormon and every other faith is destined for Hell?
Do we really want a President in the White House who believes that everyone, except for Mormons, are destined for Hell? What sort of "Guess I can't cause any more harm" attitude will this President have?
Michael, I'm glad you're not going to vote for Romney. He would be an extremely poor choice.
The “White Horse Prophecy” is a prediction made by Joseph Smith Jr. who was the founder of Mormon religion. He said that a time would come when the US Constitution would be hanging by a thread and a church elder from the Mormon Church will ride in on a metaphorical white horse and save it. [This will thereby transform the U.S. government into a Mormon-ruled theocracy.]
Correction: Mitt donates 10% to his church, and takes the tax deduction. Most of that money is used for church administration, building maintenance, property purchase and building construction. Approx. 7% of church income goes to charity work, which means a mere 0.7% of Mitt's income actually goes to charity. The only other Romney donations that I'm aware of are political campaign donations to fellow Republicans.
All religions start out as cults, with a charismatic leader who is never questioned or challenged. Once that charismatic leader dies, cults either fade away, or gradually loose their cultish aspects and become a more mainstream religion. Mormonism has become more mainstream, but hasn't been around long enough to loose all of it's original cultish aspects.
Unlike many other religions, Mormons do not believe that everyone else is bound for hell. The Mormon "hell" (called "perdition") is reserved only for the irredeemably evil who continue to rebel against God. The Mormon heaven has spaces set aside for righteous non-Mormons, ordinary non-Mormons, and even sinners called to repentance. Yes, it's complicated, but it's a bit more fair than the "us righteous only" heaven promoted by so many other churches.
After reading the above string.... why was reeblite-389524 collapsed? Every word was true. Most of my familiy is Mormon and it is true.
Attacking the Mormon faith for politics? No, but they followed me around for 20 years looking for progeny and money because I left the church in my early teens.
The level of "church approval" needed for every little thing in a Mormon's life.... really terrifying.
Mormon.org? Written by the church for the church. Sure, go read it. They spent millions on it.

CM,
"All religions start out as cults, with a charismatic leader who is never questioned or challenged. Once that charismatic leader dies, cults either fade away, or gradually loose their cultish aspects and become a more mainstream religion."
That's a good observation and very true. The ancient pagan Romans viewed Christianity as a bizarre oriental cult, and Rome was full of such bizarre oriental cults at that time. Many of them found it difficult to comprehend why anyone would worship a criminal who had been condemned to death and executed by the Roman government. The pagan neo-Platonic philosopher Porphyry even wrote a 15 volume work entitled Against the Christians in which he attacked the Christians for what he considered their ludicrous beliefs. Few people regard Christianity as a cult anymore, though.
Henry... I saw your post and busted up...
I left the Mormon church in the late 70's and have been stalked by them ever since. My wife gets so mad when I talk to the Mormons who come to my door, but what can I do...
They're usually nice, young men (white of course) who stand on my doorstep asking if I need anything and inquiring about my life. I really do enjoy Mormons. Mormons are actually quite nice people. Delusional but nice. I've just never had the heart to scream at them to get off my porch.
Which brings me to my funny story about the Baptist Minister. This guy trundles up my sidewalk one day while I'm working on a planter, and asks if I'm affiliated with any church. I say I'm not, and he suggests that I should try out his church. At this point in time, my two daughters bound out of the house (ages 4 and 8 at the time), and he looks at them, and asks if they're going to church. As nicely as I could, I tell him that we don't follow any organized religion. This guy starts to say, "Well... You really should think about coming to our church. Under the burden of Original Sin, your daughters may be condemned to the flames...". I'm up, I've got the preacher by the back of his collar and belt, and I'm assisting him off my property with his feet barely touching the grass as we head for the street.
Son-of-a-B#@$! Couldn't believe that guy. Jehovah's Witness' are just as bad. But the Mormons? Hell... I invite them in, and offer them lemonade. Nice people who don't heavily foist their beliefs on you.
Stalkers? Definitely. But nice stalkers. Would a Mormon make a good President? I'm afraid not. I want our President to be a hard, calculating man, free of any delusions, or alternate priorities outside of the United States of America. Would an Atheist make a better President than a Mormon? ABSOLUTELY. The United States of America is 100% the only priority of an Atheistic President. This President will not say things like "This is God's Will", or, "Jesus wants us to go to war". Nope.
There's a reason why our forefathers wanted a separation of Church and State. I think we should honor their wishes.
vwterry...
HAHA...you know exactly who Barry Soerto is...and conveniently look the other way!
You liberals are so transparent...unlike your savior's administration!
Romney is a candidate for a political office, not a candidate to be the representative of his church. His character and some of his views are influenced by his faith, but anyone who wants to know more can simply go to mormon.org or lds.org (and avoid all the anti-mormon sites that are full of lies, misinformation and misinterpretation). "Hiding his faith" is not what he is doing--rather, he is showing his respect for the beliefs of others!
You are right, Romney is a candidate for political office and should keept church and politics seperate. However, it is very apparent that Romney is not influenced by the LDS because of his lack of compassion.
Although I have respect for other people's beliefs, I have to make an exception for a psuedo religion that focuses on two things: getting money out of the members, and recruiting new members.
I lived in SLC for two years, and being a non-Mormon, I now know what discrimination feels like. I was told, as an 11 year old, that I could not be excluded from the Boy Scouts because I was not Mormon, but that I was wasting my time trying.
They keep Playboy magazines behind the counter, which is strange, because they encourage their captives to reproduce like crazy, like the human race is endangered. It is a big bunch of nutjobs.
And to think that the book of mormon was written by an illiterate is nothing but the truth without any misrepresentations.
Thanks for the laugh anyway.
I really like to find out the truth. When could I attend a mormon service? oh thats right its forbidden. Funny I can walk into any church jewish temple, mosque but not a mormon one, thas what makes it a cult.
Actually, you can go to any Mormon Sunday service. If you're interested, you can use the Meetinghouse Locator.
It's true that non-members and unworthy members can't enter the temple, but I don't see that this is so unusal. For instance, you're welcome to walk into a Jewish temple or synagogue, but you would not have been able to enter the Holy of Holies.
When a temple is built it is open to the public. After the public showing the carpet, that all the heathens walked on, is ripped out and replaced. I don't think any house of God should be surrounded by walls or require 'membership'.
You are welcome to enter a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church building and to attend services any time. I hope that you come! I think that you are thinking of the LDS Temples where they have special services that are of a personal and sacred nature.
Membership equates to being qualified to enter a dedicated temple. Concepts like "holy" and "sacred" should mean something. If anyone was "qualified" to enter these holy places, then they would not be holy and sacred. Makes sense to me.
JohnRN: You are welcome to attend with me anytime, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is open to all who want to attend and respect all who ask questions. I was at the home of neighbors who are not members just the other day to see how they were doing, and heard an expression of gratitude for the missionaries in Mexico who are helping their family in mexico after a death in the family. If you think all should be open all of the time goto a Mosque and see when and where they let you go.
astrogirl: did you know that the carpet in the white house is replaced when after each election and it see way less traffic that an LDS temple open house.
A man's actions are always governed by his beliefs. Therefore the LDS will have a big part in Romney's presidency if he wins.
Sharon...I hope so! I am tired of a president governing by the beliefs of Jereimah (God Damn America)Wright!
The lds church teaches solid Christian values. they believe in the Bible and strive to live Christ teachings.
Honor thy father and mother, don't lie, cheat or steal Love thy neighbor, and so on.
What is so scary about that?
Some of the best people I have ever known have been Mormon.
Readbofm! They are both cults!
Sharon Dequer - Romney is very much a candidate for political office BECAUSE he is a Mormon! Their agenda has ALWAYS been to convert America - which is why there isn't much difference between him and Obama, who had an agenda to convert America to socialism and is doing a VERY good job of it!
An excellent and very detailed look at the Mormon church is called "The God Makers" by an ex-mormon, Ed Decker, who was born into the "church" and remained long enough to become a Temple Priest, (you have to be a VERY good Mormon to attain that status) until - Thank God - he saw the true light. (He has a fabulous ministry called Saints Alive in Jesus who ministers to those coming out of Mormonism.
My now deceased uncle was a Bishop just like Romney - he married a mormon woman and left Christianity to join her there. I have held the "secret" underwear in my hands - if you can believe, like the Mormons, that God was once a man just like all the rest of the men who had ever lived and was elevated to Godhood, was married and had two sons, Jesus and Lucifer (The Mormon Jesus and The Mormon Lucifer) - that they were brothers, (remember Lucifer became Satan), that what saves you is how obedient you are to tithing (giving 10% to the "church") and the thousand of other dictates of that cult , that you will be elevated to a position of Godhood and have your own planet and celestial wives and a multitude of children with those wives - then you are NOT a Christian!!!!! Mormonism is a cult and not Christian.
ROMNEY HAS BEEN HIDING SINCE DAY ONE ON EVERYTHING! Taxes Romney...you told republicans a year ago you would provide them! Tax dodger draft dodger, show us your taxes!
Secret Mormon underwear......uh huh.....and what saves you... is how much money you give them.....YIKES!...Step right up....here ladies and gents, feel the magic underwear for just a dime, I say for just one thin dime. Don't crowd, don't crowd, just one thin dime........where does the part come in where you assualt some kid and cut his hair off?
You do realize was a BISHOP of a church of a few thousand right?
uncle was a Bishop just like Romney - he married a mormon woman and left Christianity to join her there. Interesting that someone else finally recognizes that mormons ARE NOT CHRISTIAN.
There are many exmormons who had romney as their bishop and none had anything good to say about him. Romney's own brother has been ostracized bhy the church for daring to ask questions about the book of mormon, and his own family is not allowed to speak to for fear of being shunned. One woman was not even allowed inside the church for her own daughter's wedding, as she too left the cult after failing to gain any safisfactory answers to her questions. They preach NO alcohol No caffiene, but yet they own major stock in CocaCola and tell their memebers it is oj=k for them to drink CocaCola because the church has reversed it's stance for that one company only. The magic underwear is just another money making scheme by the contempory church as it is a pracyice that came about in the 40's. Men and women are rrquired to only wear undwerwear wit the mormon seal of approval ( made by mormon hands ). One woman though it was no big deal that her husband was a mormon unti she woke up the day after her wedding wearing the mormon underwear. She said she elft the church that day. She had no explnation as to how those underwear got on her.
Until the 70's when they were forced by the feds, to allow African Americans to join they used to actually teach their members that balcks were cursed by god and that they had smaller and therefore inferior brains. I am married to a mormon, an his mother is the one who told me about the AA being inferior. I watched an hour long special on Mittens and the mormon church on tues on the CNTR channel. It is nestled in with all the news stations on satelitte.
Believe me if evenhald of what I heard the other day is true, this man ought not only to be president, but he should probably be arrested.
Mitt was groomed by the LDS to become what he is. If anyone thinks he will run this country based on what is right for the people, you are mistaken. He will do what the LDS higher ups tell him to do. He has dedicated his life to the church, not to anything else, including the people he wants voting for him. Out of touch with the common man is an understatement. Look at AZ, ID, and other Northwestern states that have been run by the Mormons. Talk about out of touch with people, yet their way of convincing people they should remain in office is asstounding. It's difficult to understand how people can continue to vote for politicians that steal your rights away on a daily basis, lie to your face and still get elected. People of color, Jews, Catholics and anyone with conviction about their right to religion or freedom do not count when it comes to the Mormons.
some say it's a cult and he's the antichrist...
Oh Sharon Dequer - your suggestion to simply go to mormon.org or lds.org and avoid all the "anti-Mormon" sites that are filled with lies, misinformation and misinterpretation reminds me of a scene from a movie...the one where the great Oz booms "DON'T LOOK BEHIND THE CURTAIN." Just as Dorothy and the gang found an ordinary man projecting the lies he wanted to people to see, if you look beyond the pretty package given in your Sunday morning sacrament meetings, you too will find something very different that what YOU are being told by your own church. And you can find it all in your own church history...no outside sources are even needed.

And have sex with 16 year olds. I have Mormon relatives and they are the most prententious people I have met. The son even scammed money from his dad and me. There more pyramid schemes and suicides in Utah than any other state.
I believe the reason for there being more pyramid schemes in Utah than any other state would be because they are the most trusting and the easiest to take advantage of. Preditors come in, home grown or not, and take advantage of that. More suicides probably because the religion is not easy to follow, the truth never is.
I grew up in Salt Lake City and was around members of "The Church" and many are very good people who just want to live a good life, but there are some very different beliefs in the teachings from that of the Christian faith. Mandatory tithings, baptizing the dead, multiple earths and differing levels of heaven and Jesus vacationing in North America, to name a few.
"The lds church teaches solid Christian values. they believe in the Bible and strive to live Christ teachings.
Honor thy father and mother, don't lie, cheat or steal Love thy neighbor, and so on."
The "Church" believes and follows parts of the King James version of the bible. Very selectively.
The church may advocate honesty, but so far Mitt and Paul have been very selective as to when they follow that most basic of religious belief.
Nope what saves you is Jesus Christ.
Hawaii has the highest teen suicide in the nation.
Nope, like most in America at the time, Joseph Smith had been taught the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Not illiterate. Growing up in a rural area, however, most of that reading was from the King James Bible, so it's not surprising that the stuff he came up with sounded a lot like the King James Bible, even down to some of the obscure names.
Two of his scriptures, the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price were works of fiction, having very little truth and lots of mis-representation. His 3rd scripture, the Doctrines and Covenants, covers church doctrines and does not have any interesting stories.
Your CRAZY AND AN IDIOT!

Didn't catch their hour long episode committed solely to Black Liberation Theology the week before the Democratic Presidential Convention in 2008. Must have missed that one.

Robert MacDonald
Probably because there wasn't a black liberation candidate?
probably because you were at your klan meeting or having your robes washed.
"probably because you were at your klan meeting or having your robes washed."
Oh, snap!
Mittens completed his mission in France to avoid the war? What was he doing in France sipping on wine and eating caviar?
HELLODOCK...Actually, no he was not. Mormons, and Romeny included (if you are informed about Romney's REAL background) do NOt sip wine. they do have ever have liquor. Other religions are the same. Inform yourself before you criticize! The information has been out there for months.
What is more important, trying to save spirits that are eternal or bodies that are temporary? Just saying...
He was on a LDS mission for his church. Teaching the word of Christ.
It is very hard work and not an easy task. Please inform yourself.
You mean he was on LSD mission while in France...Check out that photo above...yeah LSD!!!...I see London I see France...I don't see the magic underpants! Step right up one thin dime...feel the magic underpants!
starsailing....wow....did you skip school today or just forget your medication?
NOPE not wine, mormons don't believe in wine or any alcohol.
Hello Dock: Mormons don't drink alcohol and if you had any knowledge of their faith you wouldn't make such dumb comments.
American.......Mitt or any rt winger claiming to be religious, is just the opposite of what any good person thinks or does. Mitt takes from the poor and anyone else, gives some to his church and hides the rest. Taking food from a starving child and gives some of that to his church and hides the rest. That is a pretty horse crap person in any religion, race, or any other category one can think of. If he personafies his religion he has no business being an American President!
Wrong. They believe that it is to be taxed (sin tax) to pay for the support of the irresponsible breeding they promote. The mormons I've known don't drink within sight of a temple. Short of that, they can suck down as much as the next.
So how is it that you are able to "save" something that is unseen and whose whereabouts is unknown? If the people that the morons are trying to proselytize are the temporary bodies in the real world, they don't have mythical spirits in the heavens until they get there.
@the thinker-318752 - "So how is it that you are able to "save" something that is unseen and whose whereabouts is unknown? If the people that the morons are trying to proselytize are the temporary bodies in the real world, they don't have mythical spirits in the heavens until they get there." I'm sorry... I really can't follow that line of logic. The problem may be that you are not familiar with what a spirit is. Let's say YOU are your SPIRIT. You are inside your body and you control it but are in turn influenced by it. If someone tries to help you to be a better person, they are addressing the SPIRIT. If they are trying to fix a broken arm, they are helping your body. That's about it.
I have "The Book Of Morman Girl" at home (have not had the time to read it yet) and I am aware of the Polygamists but do not know too much about the Latter Day Saints. I believe their founder (Joseph Smith?) received messages from an Angel named Maroni.(?) And-they do not drink coffee. I really do not care what religion people are because their actions always speak louder than their words........
Yes, Joseph Smith received the Book of Mormon from the angel Moroni. If you want to learn more about the Mormon church, you can explore their websites at lds.org or mormon.org. Alternatively, if you want a question-and-answer site, you could ask questions at theboard.byu.edu, which isn't an official Church site, but is staffed by volunteer college students at BYU.
or you could watch the episode of South Park.
The angel, Moron?
Ha, seriously, the South Park episode really explains everything you would ever want to know. The best part is, that you think it's all a joke, and then, you find out it's all true, and it becomes even more perfect.
watch you tube video - the creation of mormonism
If you did watch the episode of South Park you should remember it ended as a happy well rounded child in a happy family. Where is the liberal acceptance that we see for any other religion? You can except gay, lesbian, bi, trans (although not a religion, it's out of our perceived norm) but not Mormons? All religions try to convert and recruit and you are spouting like it's specific to Mormons. Why do you even care where the religion started or how? President Obama is a christian too.
Peace....yes it was a girl friend named ...Maroni...Boney Maroni...great song! She was quite the angel alright. Charged $20 to touch the secreat underwear....Now I know she was a Mormon...Thanks!
Mitt's grandfather left the US to go to Mexico with his MANY wives because they didn't want to live under US law that did not allow more than one wife. Mitt's father was born in Mexico and still holds dual citizenship. If anyone thinks Mitt is going to uphold any of the laws for woman's rights, you are kidding yourself. He is alligned with the Right Wing Nuts that want to outlaw all abortions, regardless of rape, incest, etc. In their minds women do not have the right to chose anything. Want women going back down to Mexico if they are too young to have a baby, got raped, or their father or step father raped them? Or how about the right to vote? Education? Only the special people will have the rights we all have now. I'm sure they will continue to allow women to drive since they won't want to be schlepping the kids all over town during the day. As for his Mission in France, where do you think he started making all this money he has? Helping the downtrodden, speaking the gospel? Yeah right. And if you believe that, I know of a canyon for sales cheap in AZ.
The church approved caffine some time back. And I know Mormons who used to guzzel Mountain Dew even though it is loaded with caffine, even when caffine wasn't allowed. So, yes, they do drink coffee, tea and all the other forms of caffine. Some hold to the old ways and drink decaf, but then some Catholics still eat fish on Friday. As for drinking, most do not, but there are plenty of Jack Mormons that love their beer and still go to church for services. So, no all Mormons hold to everything they are told not to do, just like other religions.
I find the comments that womens rights are taken away interesting. I am a former Marine, I was a helicopter mechanic, I lift weights, I work a 40+ hour job in the aerospace Industry, I didn't want any more kids, and my hubby got snipped. Oh yeah, I am Mormon... last I checked I am doing what I durn well please. I don't like coffee, not even the smell, so that is a non-issue, dressing modestly... not an issue, I don't want any of my bits hanging out, that is a personal preference, yep still got my rights... AND not being ostracized by the congregartion I belong to... I know, shock and amazement..... :) (that was sarcasm by the way! Another one of my "suppressed" rights according to others!)
Oh, did you know..... NO ONE IS PERFECT..... in any religion or otherwise. So guess what, we all do things we wish we hadn't, or that fly in the face of the rules regardless of consequences. To judge all based on the actions of one is to suffer the same.......
Having faith in something greater than what this earth currently has to offer? (turn on the TV, the Earth has a lot of problems) How is that so bad if it helps me be a better person.....treat those around me better?
Conspiracy theories are fun, doesn't mean they are true either though. It is sad though when people have instances of members doing things that are wrong, and then everyone thinks that is how all members are.
(sarcasm on!) Wait..... isn't that stereotyping.... and discriminatory? (GASP!) Oh I know, it doesn't count when it is against a religion. :) (sarcasm off! - It is my super power :))
I think when Hatred causes you to be blind and so vociferously mean to others, I will not subscribe to your line of thinking.
HATRED ? Try clear thinking and using the education & BRAINS you spend a lifetime to improve .
I would no ore trust any Mormon than I would a Moonie, Scientologist or any other 19th or 20th century born "Religion .
Co-opting & modifying the Christian Bible does not make any group "Christian".
Mormons LEFT Christianity to start something different...they CANNOT CLAIM BOTH !
It cracks me up about how this religion says its centered on "family", yet these people are notorious of kicking their kids out of the house and not speaking to them ever again when they find out they are gay. Some 'family' values!!! Ha - what a joke.
......still not as bad as the stupidity of black theology
mike. I've only been a Mormon for 60 years, so I'm not the expert you are on the religion. But I know 6 Mormon families that have gay children, and though they do not approve of their child's sexual preference, none of them "kicked them out." Perhaps you're thinking of the Jehovah's Witnesses that encourage members to "shun with love" family members that are not active in the religion?
BYU, a Mormon university, has a gay/straight alliance club. Some of my friends from my BYU years were gay, and when they came out to their parents, they responded with love. They didn't shun them or kick them out.
However, being gay/lesbian goes against the school's policy, and those that are found to be gay are kicked out of school and ex-communicated from the religion. Sounds like love to me....
Depends on what you mean by "found to be gay." Students who are open about the fact that they have those feelings are under no condemnation. Students who actively participate in homosexual encounters are in violation of the Honor Code they signed when they entered, just like heterosexual students who participate in pre-marital sex, or students of any orientation who drink alcohol or do drugs. However, a student isn't going to get kicked out for saying "I'm attracted to men instead of women" any more than a student would get kicked out for saying "I wish I could have a beer right now."
What bothers me of ANY religion is that those bible thumpers just dont want to leave you alone.
I don't mind them being around and use their church as their crutch. But for pete sake leave ME alone.
And None of the religions is capable of doing that. They are all bible thumpers that cannot stop interfereing in your life.
I can see that you have good intentions here, but you are way off base. If a student comes in, and says that they are having homosexual feelings, they are asked to go to a special clinic to help them deal with what is described to them as a deficiency. If they refuse to go, and are openly gay, they are kicked out of school and ex-communicated by the church. I have one friend in particular who LOVES the church, and still attends, but is still considered ex-communicated for his sexuality. Something about judgement and religion just doesn't add up with this one. I can see that you are very devout, and I commend you for that, but it wouldn't hurt to admit that there are very obvious faults within the faith.
I know openly gay Mormons who haven't attended any sort of clinic, and are still members in good standing and never got kicked out of BYU for it.
There are very obvious faults with how a lot of members misinterpret things. Just like not all Baptists are Westboro, or all black Christian churches are Jeremiah Wright, not all Mormons are homophobic. Individuals are, sure. But taking the faults of a vocal minority, and deciding that it's a fault applied to a larger group as a whole, is stereotyping.
If you folks believe this about BYU and Utah being "gay friendly," Google up "Evergreen," which counsels LDS members about "same sex attraction" and how to overcome it. This is in violation of ethical standards set by "both APA's" (the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association whose guidelines clearly state that offering counseling where changing gender attraction is an option is unethical).
And for those with really strong stomachs, there are a number of YouTube videos of electroshock "gay reparative therapy" being offered under the aegis of Brigham Young University. Seriously, those folks aren't lying....
Just some more meat there, milk provider...
Really? So this is just a coincidence??
http://mormonstories.org/teen-suicide-in-utah/
cynical..Just HOW are any Religious organizations interfering in your Life??? I think you should have more concern for the ATHEISTS that REALLY want to interfere in everyones' lives. BTW, before you start pulling your hair out, I am not associated with nor do I participate in ANY Religious group. Can't say that I have ever had religion interfere with any of my 68 years of life. Oh, yeah..forgot...there was this one incident when one of those Hari Krishna nuts asked for money for some weed...at which point I blew some Maui Waui smoke into his face and told him to phuck off. Was that you???
Like I said, individual members are homophobic. Hateful people tend to be vocal. Utah has a higher concentration of Mormons, and a correspondingly higher number of the (minority) of homophobic Mormons. It's not a coincidence, but it doesn't mean "all Mormons hate homosexuals."
The electroshock therapy was discontinued after the 1970s. At the time, the DSM classified homosexuality as a mental health disorder, and such experiments weren't unusual. As a greater public understanding of homosexuality has developed, the Mormon attitude has developed accordingly. Those experiments were products of the times. I don't know a single Mormon today who thinks that electroshock therapy would be a remotely good idea.
So Mike...you have absolute concrete proof of this and can name multiple examples of this or just joining in the fray?
I personally have concrete proof i witnessed it with my mormon best friend several years back. Mormons have alarmingly higher statistics on all sexual fronts including the highest number of porn consumed through the internet BOTH gay and straight and the highest number of teen runaways and drug abusers that resulted from being excommunicated from their families after their sexuality was announced. It's always religious nuts (not just Mormons) that have the craziest statistics when it comes to sexual issues and suicide.
sorry i mean " highest number of porn consumed through the internet BOTH gay and straight - "in Utah" is what i meant to say. AND I never said there aren't individual Mormons who don't fit into any of these statistics. Obviously there are always exceptions - but we're talking the 'norm' here.
That is completely unfair!
I happen to know two people who are LDS that are Gay and their family's love them and accept them even if they do not accept their lifestyle. They were never kicked out or shunned.
How many non LDS familys have kicked out their son or daughter because they are Gay. That is something that lots of family do from all religions.
Yeah, and I'm saying that that's not the "norm." Taking stats from Utah, and pretending they apply to all Mormons, is ridiculous. The vast majority of Mormons live outside of Utah. Don't confuse "Utah culture" with "Mormon doctrine."
I have a SIL who was invited to no longer attend her mormon church because she would not submit her openly lesbian daughter to a mormon 'retraining' trust me, these people are theeeeeeeeeeeee worst when it comes to accepting Gays and Lesbians. I have my own issues wit the GLBT community but I would never forbid anyone from worshipping the lord. God made us all.
once they get your phone number they won't leave you alone....want that damn 10% so they can build more building...
didn't jesus teach outside on a rock
ever see the mormon tabernacle....how many starving kids would that have fed?!!!!!
Sorry Jackie, but you got drunk on the Kool-Aid about electro-shock at BYU being discontinued in the 1970's (not that it's defensible even then).
I had a fare in my cab two weeks ago I've been friendly with for several years. This person is mid 30's and underwent it...
Do the math...
Ya you can even see it in their backing of Proposition 8. Although (obviously) most religions took a supporting stance on Prop 8, "About 45% of out-of-state contributions to ProtectMarriage.com came from Utah, over three times more than any other state.ProtectMarriage, the official proponent of Proposition 8, estimates that about half the donations they received came from Mormon sources, and that LDS church members made up somewhere between 80% and 90% of the volunteers for early door-to-door canvassing".
if you think Mormons are homophobic, look at the Muslims: instead of kicking them out of the house, they KILL them, behead them. Also note that if any anti-Union bills come up, you have bus loads of "volunteers" suddenly showing up. And don't forget that Union money that owns the State of California allowing Pedophile teachers to continue working or collecting pensions.
Hey Cal20 I hear ya you don't have to convince me that homophobia is rampant and ridiculous in this "free" country of ours. But this thread had to do with a guy running for president who comes from a religion that totes "family values". At least Obama was willing to admit that although he personally believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, he accepted the fact that in a free democratic society he couldn't impose his beliefs on others and that everyone should have a right to marry who they want. And that was an extremely risky step to take given the fact that the majority of the population is straight and his position could easily work against his campaign. Further, you'd think Romney would have taken the same opportunity over this whole "rape" event, and said that although he is pro-life, he understands that it should be available in the instance of rape, incest, and health concerns from the mother. But NO, his legislature remains the same and he doesn't even have the balls to stand up for women in this country and admit that his personal beliefs don't reflect property legislation when it comes to rape.
"....dont reflect "proper" legislation when it comes to rape."
Actually Hawaii has the highest teen suicide rate in the nation.
Magic underwear, magical gold plates that appear with such astounding revelations yet somehow can't stick around for the rest of the world to see them, a completely ignorant take on human migration thousands of years ago with absolutely no evidence, explaining dark skin on Native Americans as being 'burned' by Jesus in the New World, the Garden of Eden being in Missouri, and Joseph Smith being arrested for fraud in New York in the early 1800's... Mormonism is less of a religion than it is a fantasy world for people too ignorant to open a book not dictated through magical "seer stones".
......still not as bad as the stupidity of black theology
Mark Twain said that if you took out 'Wherefore it came to pass" from the Book of Mormon, it would be a little pamphlet.
Smith tried to write in the style of the King James bible, trying to make it sound authentic.
He said the original copper plates (not gold) were taken back to Heaven after he transcribed them. The Mormons claim that the Bible is true, yet the Bible says that there will be no more prophets.
It is simply a crock that is accepted by people with mental issues. You only have to be around them for a little while to understand how strange they all are.
For someone to accept this baloney as truth speaks to their lack of intelligence.
I'm sorry that you believe propanganda spread by others. Did you get this information from someone who actively practices in the LDS Church or from a non-related party?
From two members of my family that married into the cult, er, religion. Good thing, too, I need someone to baptize my dead heathen self so I can go door-to-door and annoy people in the afterlife. Are you disputing the claims?
I hear no specifics in your response or any of the other postigs. Please tell us what is not true. I have many former mormon friends and they all say the same thing. It is a cult. Tell us the truth about Joseph Smith and what inspired him.
Joseph Smith came to realize that good Irish Catholic girls give great________(fill in the blank), and that Catholic Priests were all perverts. Decided, rightfully so, that a more sincere devotion was required. Hence, the Mormon Church.
@The Alien Earthling...Why does it matter what the source is? Al's post stands on its own merit, and you have no response. What you just did was typical of brainwashed mormons. You guys never have any answers to the errors in your word because there aren't any answers, which is why you dismiss everything as "anti-mormon". No intellectual honesty.
If you'd like to see a representation of Mormon answers to these ideas, go to the FAIR wiki. I can't speak for The Alien Earthling, but I know that the reason I rarely bother typing my own response out to these is that if I tried to specifically answer every single person's objections, I would never get off the Internet.
Reply to one objection yourself before you go.
Magic underwear: the concept of wearing certain items of clothing is not unique to Mormonism. Jews, Muslims, Catholic priests and nuns, and many other religions have specific items of clothing, of varying degrees of significance. I don't know a single Mormon who believes their garments are "magic." The garments simply serve to symbolize covenants we make in the temple. The garments have no "power" in and of themselves - by living the way the Lord wants us to live, we believe he will protect and bless us. If I were to not live the standards of my church, but still wear garments, it would just be another article of clothing. To a non-believer, I don't understand why the concept of garments are so different from a yarmulke or a phylactery. But calling it "magic underwear" makes it sound a whole lot sillier, which is why people do it.
What happens to mormons that don't wear them?
Mormons who don't wear them generally do so because they've decided to become inactive in the church for other reasons, so they see no reason to wear them. I don't know any active members who have been through the temple who choose to not wear them. Not wearing them symbolizes that you are no longer interested in keeping your temple covenants. That's all, really. So, accordingly, they can't go to the temple anymore, because they've made a symbolic gesture that they're not willing to keep those covenants. If they still want to come to church, that's fine. Nothing else "happens."
That is just as silly as what is implied by "magic underwear"
Let's move on to blacks, shall we?
Knock yourself out.
I'm not going to waste my time explaining things to you if at the end of it, you're just going to call it "silly" without even bothering to explain what your problem with it is.
O M G That is exactly what my husban was taught but with a twist. Because of the Cain and Abel debaucle God supposedly cursed Cain and burned his skin causing him to turn black, which is why they used to teach that AA were a cursed people.
cynical: Your name says it all. Don't know who's been bothering you with their religion but it begs the question- why are you reading this article if you're not interested?
"That is just as silly as what is implied by 'magic underwear' "
What a @ovche bag you are.
Hahahaha...you dared her to reply to one "objection" before she left in a reasonable manner. She did so. She did so intelligently, honestly, and respectfully...she did such a good job of it in fact, that you couldn't think of any other way to criticize her or the Mormon's temple practices except to call it silly. Hah. What a moron.
And what Christian (or Jewish/Muslim) sect through the millennia is free from the worst kind of bigotry, hatred, or racism? What do you think fueled a quarter of a million Christian Catholics during the crusades from the 11th through the 14th centuries? They went to the Holy Land on Pilgrimage or to kill some Muslims?
How about them staunchly white Southern Baptist congregations in the South from the 18th through the 20th centuries? What was their record regarding blacks?
Exactly what was the record of the Christian Protestants in U.K. with regards to Catholics throughout the British Isles over the centuries?
Did the Vatican oppose in any way the facist regimes last century who ethnically cleansed millions of people right on their front door step? Simply because of their heritage or religion?
History is replete with religions and the men & women in them doing awful things...when stacked up against the histories of most organized religions and sects through out the world how would you rate the Mormons regarding how they treated other people? Definitely not perfect (Mt. Meadows & priesthood discrimination)...but better than most in my book. At least so far.
Just throwing this out there,l becasue it seems to be misconstrued... I have heard many times that excommunication doesn't mean you can't attend the church. It is a way to remove any covenants that member made with God. If the member won't keep his side of the bargain, neither will God. It is null and voiding the contract basically. You can still attend. Church is as I have heard it put, a hospital for the soul.....if your soul feels sick, go to church.
Seems that ALL religions like to persecute and murder !? WTF do weneed this crap telling us how to live ? Maybe it's time we just make up our minds to become civalized and stop acting like animals who follow some guy in the sky...
Lil ol me,
That is exactly correct. My Mother and Father in law were excommunicated some time near when they got a divorce (I don't think that the excommunication was due to the divorce). I also know of one family in our congregation now where the parents are excommunicated (though I don't know why or when it happened).
Nothing we take then off to exercise or do PT and when we Shower and swim.
@Ghengis...
"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions." - Thomas Jefferson
The problem with this story is that it's a puff piece. It won't put out the truth, only that which the hierarchy wants seen. And don't get me started on all the lies the hierarchy has out there.
Dianne Spam much?
Can someone get Dianne to go away? Really Dianne? Stop.
Religious bigotry is alive and well.
Especially when the Mormon church calls the Roman Catholic church the "great and abominable whore" or the "great and abominable satan?"
When I went to BYU, I was taught that those verses didn't specifically refer to the Catholic church, but rather a metaphorical "church" of all those who fought against God. For instance, the majority of Catholics who genuinely strive to follow Jesus wouldn't be part of that. Obviously, some individuals might, as other individuals of any other faith might, including Mormons.
Speaking of bigotry, the Mormon church only recognized blacks as (barely) equal to whites in the 70's after another of those amazing "revelations". Why wouldn't an omnipotent all-knowing god get it right the first time and, like Microsoft, have to keep issuing updates? Really sounds like the prejudices of the person(s) that made up the incredulous story. *red flag*
all-knowing...too bad our president (suppose to be president of the entire US) does not more than barely recognize whites. do you REALLY think that Romeny could get by w/o an uproar by the blacks and the media by saying on national TV that this is the election we need to get all the white people out to vote for me like Obama did to blacks. The day I watched that I was absolutely stunned! If you are white this man is not your president. It is a very hard fact to face.
Al Knowing: It was not just the Mormons -remember the civil rights movement?
Why does God allow anything bad to happen? That's the question isn't it? To say that a church is not true if mistakes are made or if there are problems, is to say that if this situation exists, how could it be of God? Surely, he would not allow anything bad to happen... Look around the world. There is a lot of suffering and a lot of evil. So if god is real, why all the bad stuff? It comes down to agency, the right to choose for yourself. Even if the church belongs to God, even if its HIS church, its purpose is to perfect people. And to do that, they must have "agency". Therefore, in ANY Godly institution, there are going to be imperfect people making imperfect decisions. Hopefully, most of them will be correct. If this world belongs to GOD, then we are all caretakers and "some" of us are making mistakes. Oh, wait... ALL of us are making mistakes. Why does he allow that? Agency of course.
CoCo-1551796... I'm white, of Irish descent and a recovered Catholic. Please try to convince me that President Barack Obama is not my president. You are full of baloney. And probably upset that there is a Black Man in the White House. Get over it. Can you say: "Popular Vote?" That would be the majority of the American people, get it? It sounds like that "E Pluribus Unum" thing isn't working out for you too well, huh?
And, of course, let's not forget that Anne Frank was baptized for the ninth time in 2012, along with Daniel Pearl, the Jewish journalist who was killed 10 years ago in Pakistan who has no Mormon in his family, yet they were both baptized after death, in violation of a promise made by Mormons to Jews.
I've talked faith with members of CLDS. We have major disagreements. They are all theology and have nothing to do with politics. Mormons make good community members and neighbors. They are on the whole, conservative family people.
Forget the history (unless you are mormon) and remember, no religion has any proof for it's followers beliefs. None of us have anything other than "scriptures". Koran, Bible, more recent books, whatever. Religion is personal and I don't think they force theirs on anyone or at least I've never seen anything but the guys in the white shirts going 2 by 2. They didn't have guns.
Reasonable stuff, Paul, but there are really "two Mormon religions." One is the smallish one outside of Utah and parts of Idaho and Arizona that is composed of the people you describe...
The other is the 50-billion dollar corporation that controls the lives of its members in Utah, claims to be a charitable organization, and yet donates less than 1% of its income to humanitarian causes, and uses its media arm and Brigham Young University to circulate "faith promoting" propaganda among its membership... It claimed no involvement in politics, but strongarmed wealthy LDS members to contribute to Proposition 8 in California and anti "same sex" marriages in Alaska and Hawaii.
SL Cabbie: And you know that this how? Are you a Mormon church leader? How did you get into the financial records of the Mormon Church. If not a church leader, stop making up information to suit your agenda.
Dear Unbeliever,
This guy is a close friend of mine and accountant-type. He and a number of others routinely "crunch the numbers" (one my siblings, BTW, is a former CFO of a Fortune 500 company and I bounce this stuff off her and her husband to fact check it).
http://jhuston.com/Documents/mormon_finances_and_charity.htm
The sources cited include the Ostlings who wrote Mormon America. The LDS Church is as secretive in this country about its finances as Mitt Romney is about his tax returns, but they are bound by "full disclosure" in Canada and Great Britain. The extrapolations are reasonably accurate, and no "church source" has denied them; instead messengers like myself are routinely subjected to the sort of ad hominem smears you engaged in. I'll translate that one for you: You folks don't like the message, so you try to shoot the messenger... That's particularly juvenile, IMHO...
BTW, the term "Morg" used here is a play on Mormonism and "Borg" from Star Trek. I don't use it myself (which is why I didn't cite Jim's blog originally), but it does illustrate the anger many ex-Mormons feel when they discover the depth of the indoctrination they've been subjected to.
Resistance is not futile...
It really would not have mattered if the program aired about the LDS faith were shown in a positive or negative light. It would have been misconstrued by most of those who have posted on this page. There is a saying in our religion, "people can leave the Church, but they can't leave it alone". The members of our religion are as vastly different as the citizens of the world, however, they are trying to be good and honest and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ (note the title of our church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. No, we are not perfect. And two hundred years ago when the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored the name "Saints" meant more of a brother/sisterhood rather than a saint as defined by other religions.
All the conspiracy theories offered in these posts show how uninformed people are about our religion. The people that were interviewd in the piece were as follows: Some who have been very successful in business, one family who has embraced the gospel and is trying hard to live it and three disgruntled members who for what ever reason have left the church. I would think that it would have been more appropriate to give a more fair and balanced report. I live in Utah. I know everyone of my neighbors. We give service to these neighbors every day. My husband and I have raised 11 children. Most of them have a Bachelor Degree or higher. They are all gainfully employed. We have 16 grandchildren and are just getting started. We are highly motivated grandparents who know and love each child. We also have been blessed financially as we have worked hard at our business and now employ 120 young people who are trying to go to local universities. And no, we are not perfect.
Why is it so hard for people to belive that there really are good people in the world? Why do they try so hard to tear down those that try everyday to be good? That is my question. Are we as citizens of the United States so cynical that we refuse to look for good? I will leave you with that question.
Dianne has asked all of us so many, many, many times........I just HAVE to say it.
Dianne, you're crazy.
The Mormon faith believes the leader of the church is a Living Prophet. That means, he gets the word directly from God and periodically tells the faithful of what he has been told or told to do. And if your prophet says to push the nuclear button and you are a faithful member of the church..... what do you do?
Probably the same thing JFK did when he got orders from the Vatican.
/sarc
The Church is politically neutral.
yea right, like what they did in California on Prop 8. Should get their non-profit status yanked.
There is a difference between political issues and moral issues. Marriage is a religious institution until the government started giving privileges to those who were married, ei rewarding for desirable behavior. Mormons believe that once marriage between people who happen to be gay is deemed "okay" in the sight of government that they can start teaching that it is not a moral issue to our children in public schools.
And if you are Muslim and pray to the East at least 3 times a day Mecca is your BOSS. Right Barack???
@bensont
Sorry, marriage predates religious usurpation of the "institution". Civilized society governed marriage to create some semblance of order and rights. Religion attempted to do the same later within the religious framework. Religions do not own the "institution" of marriage though many try to paint history that way.
Why would God ever tell a prophet to "push the button"? I don't think He
would need to rely on something as crude as a Nuclear Bomb. And remember, he
loves everyone in the world equally, the evil and the not so evil. Your
question obviously means that you don't believe the President of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a prophet. Isn't that the real statement
you are making? If that is true, then I can understand why you would be afraid
of anyone professing to have a lot of faith, because in the back of your mind
you will always wonder, "What happens if the crazy guy that believes in a
"god" is told by that "god" to kill someone? Obviously,
only atheist can be trusted to make unbiased decisions, atheist like Marx and
Hitler.
And how would you know that, "mod in mad", unless you were Muslim?
Simple fact is, one can know all about a religion without being a member or believing in that religion. In a survey on knowledge about religion, Atheists in general knew more about religion than any religion, followed by Jews and Mormons. Knowing the details of a religion makes it easier to debate, which explains why Atheists, Jews and Mormons know more about religion than the average Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, or Muslim.
Dan....you're quite ignorant aren't you . Neither Hitler ( a DEVOUT Catholic ) nor Stalin, nor Mar, nor Pol Pot were atheists.
http://www.examiner.com/article/refuting-the-myth-that-hitler-stalin-and-pol-pot-were-atheists-1
@dan from utah
Wrong about Hitler, Dan. He was a professed Christian. Though he had ideas at variance with mainstream Christianity, he used the religion to herd others into believing what he needed them to believe to make extermination and more living room "reasonable" goals.
Villifying only atheists is a religion-inspired self-serving tactic and is quite transparent.
Comment # 17 deleted, a lot of racist derailing from The GYPSY!.
You are suspended for a week for violating rule # 5 of the Code of Honor.
Like what BO does what Jeremiah preaches.......we get it.
I don't think Romneyshowed much benevolent Christianity when he threw all that bile at Gingrich and Santorum.
By the way, is it true that both Scientologists and Mormoms believe they came from another planet?
......still not as bad as the stupidity of black theology
Gypsy, Why dont you seed your own article?
Mormons believe that God was born on the planet Kolob as a man, and became a God. They also say that if you reach the highest level of heaven (yeah, it is weird and complicated), you become a God yourself, and you get your own planet.
They don't tell that to you on your first day, though. They lost a lot of prospects that way. Now, they don't tell you that unless you really ask a lot of questions.
You'd have to be a total fruitcake to believe this mess.
Joseph Smith taught that God was a man who inhabited the Planet Kolob and progressed to Godhood via the gospel principles the church teaches... The Book of Abraham I mentioned above describes some of these claims. A horrible event occurred in church history when the original papyrus fragments were discovered in a museum and returned to the church. They bore Smith's "translation notes," and there was a receipt signed by his widow, Emma Smith, who sold them after Joseph Smith's death.
And Gypsy, to back to the Glenn Beck show, okay? You're every bit as brain damaged as he is...
no scientologoists believe they escaped from a galactic overload and mormons believe jesus is waiting on the planet kolob to return to the garden of eden in MISSOURI!
yeah..it's.a.good.thing.christianity.makes.so.much.sense:..the.universe.was.created.in.a.week--adam.shaped.from.mud.&..eve.from.an.extra.rib---and.the.best:..the.entire.world.was.devastated.by.a.flood..and.Noah.repopulated.the.entire.planet.with.every.living.organism.as.well.as.his.lenghthy..lifetime--what.a.crock
yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup
Who really knows all that any religion believes? Religion is personal. You all think you are experts. None of you are qualified to spew your bigoted fanatic rhetoric regarding religion. I find that it is those that preach tolerance that are the most intolerant. You all speak of the weird things those Mormons do. Let me tell you something I've never heard them do.......they do not speak I'll of other faiths. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they do. All you experts.....have you heard Mormons trash other religions? Respect for another's religion.......what a nice old fashioned idea. Try it.
~300 years ago, the aristocracy of Europe's most powerful countries used mercury daily. We now think they were insane, and probably explains some of their insane decisions. The people at the time didn't think anything of it.
Today, we seem to openly accept indicators that our leaders are heavily biased towards tradition and faith rather than thought and reason. We openly accept the forced merger of church and state.
Future generations will think that all of us are lunatics.
We should be asking more questions about this cult since Romney is a bishop in it. It obviously does not take a moral high road even though it claims those who lie will go to hell. Not a word from them and all Romney does is lie. If he were a bishop in the Catholic church the news would be all over it and questions wouldn't stop being asked. Why is media giving this clown a free pass? Mitt Romney has been groomed by the Mormon church all his life to run for president. He will put church teachings above what is best for the rest of us. Remember this is a church that Baptizes persons after they have died, they have no rights and can't speak out once they are dead. Do you think they will care about your rights? Look at how Romney has lived his life, as a rich brat whose whole family looks down on the rest of us. Remember his wife? "YOU PEOPLE" know all you need to know. What a snob! Why doesn't he want to let his taxes out? He is hiding something, he has a record of being a crook. He has no conscience, just look at the companies he bought and stripped of everything he could that could enrich himself and his wealthy friends. Then he sold them off or shipped the jobs overseas while firing American workers. They want to down play this fact! They are trying to tell us that he knows from his business experience how to create jobs, not here in this country as he prefers to send them overseas where he can get slave labor to maximize what goes into his pocket. His budget? To cut tax for the top 1%. Where will he get the money to pay for this? From programs that help the rest of us. We are not entitled to help from the government when things are tough. Our tax dollars can pay for wars, to bail out banks and businesses, to send all kinds of aid overseas but given the choice with a Romney/Ryan budget will strip money from food stamps, fuel assistance, housing assistance for the poor, Medicare, Social Security, infrastructure and on and on. They call programs we all pay into social programs and entitlement programs and try to paint those who need assistance as slackers, lazy worthless animals who refuse to help themselves. Many who now have jobs will see them shipped to China. Wake up people, if this guy gets into office we will go over the cliff. Bush years demonstrated how well trickle down economics work while giving the rich more and more tax cuts. A Romney/Ryan administration would be the Bush years on steroids. Wake up and keep them out of office. Give this country hope by giving us a majority in both house and senate so bills to add jobs and grow the economy will pass. It is the work of Republicans refusing to let bills pass or to weaken them so much that we are not doing better in this country. They figured the 99% was too stupid to see that and depending on lies to shape the election in their favor. Do your homework, see who is telling the truth. Watch real news and demand that they tell the real story rather then be a megaphone for the Republican party claiming to be news like Fox news which is anything but news.
......still not as bad as the stupidity of black theology
would you shut the frack up
I have seen many reports claiming that Romney shut down lots of companies and shipped jobs overseas. Yet the only company specifically names is a company that was shut down long after he left Bain Capital. Yet he is still blamed for killing a woman with cancer. Can you give me any specifics or where I can look up any numbers on the companies he shut down? What jobs did he move out of our country? I want specifics. As far as his religion I am finding that there are lots of rumors and speculation that are not correct. If you want to find out the truth goto the Mormon church. Just like if you want to find out about any other religion, go and talk with them or their leaders. When it comes to religion they all think they are right and will make up all kinds of lies about each other. For those who are religious and say you can learn lots more from someones enemies than from there friends. Then I ask you will you learn more from the devil if you are trying to learn about god?
Fantastic Gypsy! The black theology thing has been overlooked way too long.
anyone that can put as much thought into an issue, whether it be called prayer, meditation, or whatever, is on the right track. Notice that Romney is focused on fixing our nations' problems instead of talking trash like obama does. I'm interested in knowing what the problems are and how the problem will be fixed, not hearing a bunch of basketball court jive talk. As american's we should be ashamed of how the world sees us.
I don't recall Mormons sawing peoples heads off on video.
I don't recall Mormons committing over 15,000 (yes you read correctly) 15,000 terrorist acts since 2001 that you will deny..
I don't recall Mormons stoning women just for wanting equal rights.
I don't recall Mormons hanging people just because they are gay.
I don't recall Mormons murdering their daughters in the name of "Honor killing"
I don't recall Mormons flying planes into the WTC killing more than 3,000 innocent people.
I don't recall any Mormons strapping bombs to their body and blowing up pizza parlors in Tel Aviv.
I *DO* recall a very special school for those suffering from down syndrome. Maybe you and your logic should check in and learn at a higher lever of intellect than you currently have..
Before anyone else starts in on the Catholic church ( and no I am not Catholic ) it might be helpful for all to know that the word Catholic is an archaic latin word for UNIVERSAL. It was adopted by the Catholics after they left the Church of England.
meme: Too long and takes too much time to read your post.
how much of their assets could have fed and clothed poor starving children....
Moronic comments. Lets hear more about Rev. Jeremiah Wright, now there is a progressive thinker for you. Harry Reid is also a mormon but apparently remains on the planet Kolob.
Give it a rest Amused:
Romney is only focused on telling us that he has a plan to fix our nation's problems. When asked what his plans are, he gives vague details, and non-specific information. He mostly says, he has plans that he will share with the country ONCE he gets past this election and is in the White House. Then he'll let us all know what plans he has for all of us. AFTER he's President.
frances,
"It was adopted by the Catholics after they left the Church of England."
You are right about the word Catholic being Latin for universal, but it was the Church of England that broke off from the Roman Catholic Church because the Pope would not give King Henry VIII the divorce he wanted; not the other way around. The Roman Catholic Church has gone by the name Catholic since the times of the early Church Fathers. I think it was Saint Ignatius who first used the word Catholic in the first century AD to refer to the church.
Correction--- Romney WAS a bishop in the late '80's and is no longer. A Bishop in the LDS church is over one local congregation of about 400 and is not nearly as high up as a Catholic Bishop. Since LDS bishops serve for only about 5 yrs., as an unpaid "pastor" of sorts, and there are currently just under 30,000 bishops-- that means there a whole lot of "former bishops" in the world and it doesn't mean a whole lot now. It does mean that during those 5 yrs (or however long Romney served) he was responsible for the welfare and spiritual needs of those specific 400 people. He probably counseled many about financial, marital, parenting, health, and other such trials. Because he served in the Boston area with few LDS people, his ward (congregation) would have included folks from all walks and most certainly taught him compassion and tolerance for others. Being bishop is an unpaid position which usually requires about 20 hrs. a week of you spare time while you continue to work the day job.
memer I would love to read yours comments but I'm into paragraghs
Each new thought demands a new paragraph
English - grade school - run on words gives me a headache
Interesting.
I have to admit that I have huge respect for Mormon Bishops and Stake Presidents. To devote years upon years of unpaid service like that takes a special type of person.
They ARE paid after a fashion. They do not have to support themselves, the church does that. It pays for their living expenses which frees them up to spread the word and convert more people for their congregation. Now if I don't get paid for my job then I cannot pay my rent buy clothing food etc. So yes they are paid.
Bishops and Stake Presidents hold down every day jobs and ALSO devote hours of their time to meeting one-on-one with members, providing religious instruction, making sure their wards and stakes are fully staffed with other volunteers, etc. Their living expenses are not paid!
@Frances- you have your information wrong I am sorry. No one in the LDS Priesthood or those who teach in the church is paid in any way. The church does not support them or their families financially they all have regular jobs just like everyone else in the congregation. You may want to get your facts worked out as you have made several mistakes in your attempts to criticize the LDS church.
Frances-- Dang, someone owes my family some "back pay" if you were correct-- but you're NOT. Bishops and Stake Presidents are NOT paid anything but give about 20 hrs. of service a week meeting the needs of those they serve AND working their chosen profession. Some General Authorities who give service full-time have a stipend to help meet living expenses. I'm told it's quite modest by all measures and even the LDS President usually lives in his own modest family home bought decades earlier.
souptwins - So does Big Brother or Big Sister or volunteers in soup kitchens or nurse's aides in hospitals or any volunteer in charitable work they don't get paid
So what's the big deal - are these people more commendable than the thousands of volunteers throughout this country?
I ran a Thrift Shop in Virginia for the local hospital, sat on Cancer Boards, ran skin clinics for them - was a 4H Leader - guess what - no pay - just my time which is more precious than money but more important - to give
You're point is?
Barbara,
If you read what soup wrote, soup was correcting frances and pointing out the amount of time it takes to be a Bishop. Soup was not trying to say that no one else volunteers time.
No Frances.... They AREN'T paid. What part of volunteer unpaid service is it you don't understand?
Mitt Romney's religion has made him a decent family man and successful business person. Why would you not want someone like that for a president? Look at his resume: He took the seemingly hopeless 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and turned them into a huge success story. Back in the 1980s as a venture capitalist he took a chance on an office supplies business that operated out of the back of a run-down old shopping center. Today we call that office supplies business Staples. He also had a successful term as governor of Massachusetts. The U.S. has a $16 trillion debt problem and I doubt the rock star currently in the White House has the first idea how to address it - after saying repeatedly that he did.
Do you have problems with the Mormon religion? Did you have problems with Nancy Reagan consulting astrologers? Did you know Dwight Eisenhower's parents were Jehovah's Witnesses? Let's not forget Kennedy the Roman Catholic. Nixon was a Quaker.
The Bible Mitt Romney reads says, "If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says 'Depart in peace, be warmed and filled', but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?" (James 2:15-16).
Mitt Romney knows that he must do something and is asking his people for a chance. It seems to me that a little practical religious wisdom and goodwill would help America get working again.
I lived amongst the wackos. They stockpile food. They will feed Mormons first, and if anything is left over, that can be distributed to the non-Mormons.
They aren't evil or anything, just blinded by their weird, rigid religion.
Mitt Romney took ALOT 0f taxpayer money to make the Olympics a success and just like he did when he left the Governors office of Mass. He either took or scrubbed ALL records so we dont know just how successful he was, Do we.
Yep, Mitt Romney is a decent human being whose business enterprises operated for the common good of people in this country... /sarcasm off...
http://www.classwarfareexists.com/they-brought-in-security-guards-they-fired-us-all-they-walked-us-out-of-the-building/#axzz24NUu1vzj
You may have to click the "refresh" button on this page to get it to load ("reload' on Macs). If I were the paranoid sort, I'd be blaming cyber-Danites. Keep refreshing until you see other than a blue patch down the middle The information is sound and can be fact-checked against other news stories.
Biden told the story of Randy Johnson, who used to work at Ampad, a paper plant in Marion, Indiana, that was acquired in 1994 by a company owned by Bain and became SCM Office Supplies.
“The workers were fired, including Randy, and told they could reapply for their jobs but the wages would be lower, health benefits would be less,” Biden said, speaking about Johnson, who introduced the vice president. “Then a year later they shut the plant down — everyone lost their jobs.”
Johnson said he and some of the other employees who were hired back eventually held picket lines in protest to cuts in their pay and benefits. The factory was later closed.
And the business model of 2002 Olympics here was doubtless one Mitt Romney would approve of (thousands of unpaid volunteers, many drawn from LDS Church wards). He also solicited huge sums from Congress to subsidize the event. The 'calamity" was created by over-zealous organizers who originally bribed Olympic officials to bring the games here in the first place, and Mitt's "saving the Games" is a bit of hyperbole. Any competent CEO sort could've done the same since much of the oversight was orchestrated by LDS leadership.
yea he had to save the olympics from the kickbacks and corruptions by MORMONS
No Wingfold....He was born in to money...to say that somehow his righteous mormonism helped him to be successful is a laugh. He what I like to call a Nazi-Mormon...someone who is a letter of the law Mormon rather than a compassionate "spirit of the law" person. I have lived in Salt Lake City for 20 years now and I definitely dont want a bunch of judgemental Nazi-Mormons running the country. It's been bad enough having them run Utah
starderup...yeh, right . You lived among the wackos......must be mistaking Mormons with the wild pigs who raised you........I understand you named your first child Porky, cause he loved to phuck pigs. Seems starderup has a real "fictional" life experience for every subject. He even lived among the Martians in Idaho for awhile....hmmmmm.....he needs to quit smoking that rope for awile.
starderup, so imagine losing your job or being stuck at home because a natural disaster and the ensuing riots wiped out all the grocery stores. Wouldn't you want a supply of food from your basement to get you through? To store food is a wise thing to do in case of a rainy day, regardless of your religion or who suggested that you do it. It's called planning ahead and emergency preparedness. Many people who lose their job rely on the government to bail them out. Us Mormons try to take on the responsibility to take care of our own families in the event we come on hard times. Are all people who are smart enough to do this as crazy as you're implying? And the dig on mormons taking care of their own is out of line. If we didn't do this, then the assistance the needy receive would be coming from your tax dollars. The mormons taking care of the needy (and it's not just limited to church members) is saving you money pal.
CJ: And who do you think pays for the Olympics in other countries?????
DECENT men do not sell the jobs of thousans so that he cansell those jobs overseas. He caused thoudands to be homeless! He caused thoudands to be without needed health insurance. A DECENT man would not have done that now would he? A DECENT man would not be hiding his tax recors for the last 10 years unless his friends were telling the truth whenthey said that he had not paid taxes for 8 of those years. A DECENT man would not deliberately keep spreading the same old lies about his opponent even after he was shown the truth would he? A DECENT man would not have exploited his wife's illnesses would he? Seriously, you have a skewed definition of the word decent.
Wingfold - that corrupt Salt Lake City Olympics was given $1.3 Billion Federal Tax Dollars, yes my boy more money than any other US Olympics
And who benefitted - as I read a guy who got a free road to his ski resort - plus many others
Plus people working their said they didn't see much of Willard - he spent a lot of time in Boston on various boards
Next question if your hero did such a wonderful job why are all records sealed?
You would think he would want to be touting them - even Senator McCain said this was a boondogle
Next why take the hard discs from his term as Governor of Mass
I have an answer you might not like - my theory - is he used his staff in Mass for political purposes - which is a violation and a criminal law
And he used his time at the Olympics to further his political career in preparing to run for President
Not a DECENT MAN BUT A CONNIVER AND AN OPPORTUNIST
For one, Mitt (R-Money) thinks my gay daughter shouldn't have the same civil rights my wife and I enjoy. Mitt's notion of "family" apparently includes some families but not others.
There's no way in hell I'd vote for a bigot like that, or anyone else who tithes to a cult which tries to suppress my daughter's legal rights.
Get your story right!
Jewish, Catholic, Baptist, Mormon...they are all just cults, and belief in one of them should disqualify you from public office.
AGREED! We need a true atheist leader that has a proven success record like Stalin and Marx!!
Good Lord! I hope we never get a Jewish president!
Right Gypsy, and should we even begin to list the number of religious leaders and institutions that have been oh so wonderful? Why not go back to the days of the Inquisition and burn all those we disagree with. Atheists have killed people, and the religious have killed people. That does not make atheistic beliefs or religious beliefs bad in and of themselves.
Only if his mother comes with him to the White House to make him feel guilty about bad decisions.
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!
mormons are prejudice...but they will say they are not...
they have also taken native american children away from their parents against their will...
Fidel Castro, Stalin, Lenin, Marx and Chairman Mao would have agreed with you. Great guys all.
@gypsy
Well, if you are truly a Gypsy, your friendly God-fearing German Nazi leaders would have taken you apart in the death camps. Listen to a few Hitler speeches invoking the name of the Lord to protect Germany from the Jews and other mongrel races.
Yeah, blame tyranny solely on atheists. It comes from believing you are better and more deserving than others and actions to marginalize and "use" others in your quest for power.
In article published on christiananswers.net, Bob Pardon, Director of the New England Institute of Religious Research, calls the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormonism) the most dangerous cult in America.
So do evangelical Christians, who are normally such reliable Republican voters, vote for Romney who represents such a dangerous religion? Or do they vote against him, or just stay home?
Anybody truly interested in the actual teachings and beliefs of the Mormon Church, go to www.mormon.org.
go to ex morman sites to get the real stories. very eye opening morman beliefs!
Yeah, "ex-mormons" are going to be totally unbiased about the Mormon religion. Kind of like how my "ex-boyfriend" will give you totally unbiased information about my character. Oh, wait...
singingarrows and Jackie - I understand that you want people to read what the LDS church now teaches and wants the world to understand about it, by using church-approved websites and from church-approved books, etc. Unfortunately, those faith-promoting sources simply do not tell the whole story. What is taught now is so very different from what Joseph Smith and the early prophets taught. Smith gave at least three differing accounts of the "first vision," varying who and how many personages appeared to him. You would thing he would remember the details if GOD appeared and told him something, and there would only be ONE version. If you really want to know the LDS church, you need to look at more than simply the white-washed, shiny, pretty version currently available on mormon.org. In fact, all you need to do is dig a little deeper into your own church history books...no outside sources needed. Doing so will open your eyes to the lies you have been told.
DKS: They said that about Catholics, too. Most Mormons are just like everyone else, trying to make a living and feed their families. It really doesn't matter what faith our president practices as much as what is he going to do to improve the lives of ALL Americans. My vote is with Romney on this because Obama has already proved he doesn't have a clue what to do to improve the economy.
Not at all surprising, they consider Mormon evangelizing the biggest threat to their own little "Christian" evangelical cult due to simple competition. When some other evangelical religion starts cutting into their membership base, that will end up being considered "the most dangerous cult".
Hmmm, considering the rapid rise of Atheism, Agnostics and the Unchurched, it is only a matter of time before they start calling that a "dangerous cult", which would be really weird as unbelief has absolutely no "cult" characteristics.
Although the Latter-Day Saints are, in the main, a worthwhile organization, the church is infused with the importance of obedience and not questioning the General Authorities of the Church. There is a tremendous lack of transparency regarding the financial dealings of the Church as well as a lot of secrecy and blind acceptance of organizational and leadership decisions. The lack of transparency in the Church is akin to the lack of transparency in the Private Equity business. The scary thing with Mr. Romney is that the three organizations that have infused his life - family, church and his career - are fraught with secrecy and a concentration of power in and decision-making by a few people (i.e. men). Habits are hard to break and my guess is that Mr. Romney would rule as his history to date would indicate - in secrecy and without question. I doubt openness would be a hallmark of a Romney presidency but the travails flowing from a lack of openness would. We as a country would greatly suffer by an imperial Romney presidency (Nixon redux?).
Wow... That's a nice analysis Wecoyote. You're right. Electing Romney would result in a presidency shrouded in secrecy with absolutely no transparency. It'd be very similar to the campaign he's currently running. People ask him how he'd fix the economy, or end the recession, and all we get is... "I've got a plan shaping up, and we're going to discuss it at length once I'm president".
In reality, it's just like going to your Dad when you're sixteen, just got your license and ask to borrow the car, "I'll think about it a bit, and as soon as I'm done thinking about it, we'll discuss it.", and then weeks go by and you realize that your Dad really doesn't want you borrowing the car. Same with Romney. He just doesn't want us knowing what he's going to be doing in office once he's elected.
Pretty cunning of him.
Yep. Spot on! That we've let Mr. Romney get this far without details is inexcusable. But I hope (and pray?!?!?!!) that that will change between now and November.
And Mr. Obama has been so open and transparent? Give me a break.
And the Muslim got a pass on his religion. Oh wait, he was not there for Jerimiah Wright's sermons. Yeah, right.
Read Rev Wrights sermon before you comment on it. The comment as usual was taken out of context which you won't understand til you read the sermon. And at least Obama claims to be a Christian. And who was the reason Ryan went into public office. Ayn Rand. A russian atheist. so lets see we have people who will vote for a practicing atheist and a mormon because they don't want to believe that Obama is a Christian. Wonder what God will think of that? Isn't it the height of hilarity and hypocrisy! Everyone listen. Will Ryan say God Bless America after his speeches like President Obama does? I hope public pressure makes him do it. And yes it is the slimiest, dirtiest campaign ever run by Romney and Ryan. And don't Mormons go to hell for telling lies. I heard that. But you know that hasn't stopped Romney. Over everything. Mr etch a sketch will try anything on any day to try to get votes. That must be a mormon thing cause it aint a Christian thing. Neither is lying.
Read what mormons really believe from them before you take stuff out of context as well.

There should be NO RELGIOUS TEST for any candidate for office in this country. JFK put that entire matter to rest.
I also want to be VERY clear that I think Romney and the GOP are a clear and present danger to the country as we know it!
So, let's drop any talk about Romney's, or anyone else's religion unless it directly impacts the campaign, e.g., Ryan's clinging to his religion and his budget plan while the US Catholic Conference of Bishops denounce his plan as not passing the morality test in how it treats the poor and elderly!
Article 6 of the Constitution makes clear that there is to be no (obvious??) test. Romney's religion is not the test but his character is and it has been molded by his religion - just like JFK. In a way, religion, and the way it can have a over-weighted influence in one's life, is a de facto test.
In this case, Romney's influence and character has been shaped by his family's 5-Generation's of involvement in the cult of Mormonism. That far away from reality is not a position where we'd want to have our potential president to be.
And just what is President Obama's religious beliefs and influence. What church does he currently go to or belong to? What church did Obama grow up and spend most of his time in? Was that any better? If I had to pick between the two I would pick the mormon religion.
Who wants someone as President of the United States who is not a Christian? Majority still rules. This president appears to honor others religions which is essential. An atheistic, jewish, Mormon or whatever may not feel it is necessary and quite frankly some who claim to be Christian may not either.
ktlin: Majority does NOT rule when it comes to constitutional matters. NO LAW can be passed, regardless of the majority will, that violates the US Constitution!! Of course, someone can always introduce a constitutional amendment that provides for a religious test. That will go absolutely nowhere.
Those who say our president must be a christian is not an American in the truest sense of the word! I would support a Zoroastrian for president if he could do the job.
Any of this Mormon bashing and guilt by inference for Mitt Romney also goes for Harry Reid right since he is also a Mormon unless a democratic Mormon is somehow better than a republican Mormon. If you believe that you are truly a hypocrit.
OK...Here's the thing for me. I loath his Liberal policies he has enacted and still promote. I detest the cultist tactics his followers use when people do not agree that he is the best candidate for the Republican Party, ( which I believe they learned in their Temple as it is well known a majority who back him are LDS as demanded by the Elders, but what I simply can NOT tolerate for a President of the USA is a man whose ego is so psychotic that he actually believes he will be a polygamist god having endless sex with 1,000's of wives on his own planet..oK? Look at his eye's and that tells me all I need to know..the far off, glassy-eyed gaze of indoctrination, not to mention the 'White horse prophecy of Mormons ruling their 'Holy Land', (America) in a Mormon Theocracy. I say...NO THANK YOU!
I mean...what not just get a Voodoo Witch Doctor whose drinks blood from a freshly beheaded chickens neck? Same difference.
(Call me bigot all you want..If you want VooDoo, go ahead and dance to a trance
...If you are LDS, have at it, baptize
dead people...But NOT for the Leader of the Free World!)
I congratulate you with your "extensive knowledge" on what goes on with Mormons. Try to get legitimate information please, and news from people less than thrilled with the LDS Church.
Anybody truly interested in knowing the actual teachings and beliefs of the Mormon church, go to www.mormon.org.
Ah, send 'em to ldsfreedomforum.com instead, arrow tosser... Give them a little meat to go with that milk...
Anyone want a free cab ride to more objective sources, try these...

Yeah, "exmormon.org" is totally objective. Kind of like you're going to get totally objective information about my character by talking to my exboyfriend.
Again I ask what is Obama's religion and is it any better? I do not think Obama believes in any god but himself.
Obama professes to be a Christian and if you are a fellow Christian you are commandedby God to treat him with respect because he is the one who put him there as President of the US. Dont believe me read the book of Romans. 13 I believe. That should be enough to stifle the ignorant and misleading info coming from the radical right. Suddenly Christians think they can be hateful and spew any misinformation they want because they don't like Obama. How you treat others is paramount to being a Christian. Lets see all that say Lord Lord will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven and Wide is the path but narrow is the Gate that leads to the Kingdom. And it is easier for a camel to get through the Eye of a Needle than for a rich man to enter the Gates of Heaven. Why do you think that is? Watch a few of them and see. And why is it that rich people think they are entitled to tell the rest of us what to do. In my opinion they aren't so they should simply quit trying.
Deb......
ummm...... Obama is a moderate, a little right of center. That is why some of the true liberals have problems with him!
ktlin..... again, we are NOT a christian country and the American people will NOT alaow it to become one! In THIS country, religion has NO PLACE in government, and vice versa!
watch you tube video - the creation of mormonism
youtube?? :)) no thanks!
Tom in NH... Thank you. BTW, going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.
SO If I want to learn about democrats I just ask any republican and if I want to learn about the republicans I just ask Democrats. that way I can get the truth on who they are.
Actually, if you want to know the truth about someone, ask their enemies about their best qualities, and ask their friends about their worst qualities. You might not get much, but it will be true...
If you ask their enemies about their worst qualities, you will get nothing but slanderous lies. If you ask their friends about their best qualities, you will get nothing but flattering fawning lies.
So then if I want the truth about someone, do I go to the friend or the enemies? Cabbie was saying not to go to mormon.org but to go to exmormon.org or other ex mormon sites. If a person really wants to find out the truth, go ahead and investigate. But don't come to a conclusion based on exmormon.org. Don't come to a conclusion based on mormon.org. Talk to people. Let a mormon explain any concerns you come up with. The ex mormon sites are not devoted to the best aspects of the LDS church as far as I know. They are devoted to "exposing" flaws. Going to the websites suggested follows your last sentence not your first.
Anybody truly interested in knowing the actual teachings and beliefs of the Mormon church, go to www.EXmormon.org.
I thought you were talking about Obama until I reached the end
Every now and then after work a couple of years ago the missionaries would be near the Metro stations here in DC - also a major bus stop. They never approached blacks - only whites. That raised a huge flag for me. On the other hand, I believe anyone would be better than Obama. If he gets a second term -- imagine what he'll do. No one will have to work -- all handouts!
Seems to me all the corporations and the wealthy are getting all the handouts!
CJ, you are absolutely right!! And GUESS who is providing all those handouts??? People should LISTENING to republicans and their cabal, and WATCH what they DO!! You will find them worshipping at the altar of the moneyed and corporate elite, while giving Joe America the finger!
Won't be any hand outs for anyone. However, if you're not rich and you lose everything. Don't cry if they take away all you had that could have helped you. Lots of poor are voting agaisnt themselves, which I believe most must believe they will hit the lottery. Because if poor and middle class can't buy items and other things small business and other things wont have work.
Only businesses that have jobs over sea's and are able to mainly sale in countries that are able to buy it will last. If we were smart, we would run the country like Brazil does theirs.
Imagine what Romney will do take everything for the rich.
world10... People should watch what they wish for.
"Corporations are people." The U.S. Supreme Court
"Corporations are people, my friend." Willard "Mitt" Romney
"Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." Benito Mussolini
Mikki -you just contraticted youself - why did those missionaries not want Blacks and they raised a flag for you? What kind of a flag?
Where they looking for a contribution and realized Blacks where unable to contribute - or did they think Blacks where not worthy
And you end your totally uninformed statement in assuming the Black Community does not work - mothers work their butts off - men can't get work
And Mikki - your prejudice knows no bounds - hand-outs? No it looks like these so-called missionaries where looking for a hand-out
2 wods for everyone. Planet Kolob. Go look it up. This is a "cult", as much as Jehovah Witness.
Don't think the Planet Kolob nonsense is any more nonsensical than the blood of Christ sacrament or the virgin birth or the resurrection. It's religion. One man's holy religion is another man's evil cult. They are all cults. Disturbing that they have such an out sized influence on our politics.
all.religions.are.cults...all.have.aspects.of.a.fairy.tale.or.myth---burning.bushes,stone.tablet.that.only.one.person.can.see.or.touch---putting.all.the.animals.and.plants.in.the.ark.so.they.could.save.mankind!!..give.me.a.break...you.don't.have.to.believe.any.of.this.in.order.to.be.a.spiritual.being.....blind.faith.is.juvenile
Any religion seems perfectly reasonable if you were raised believing in it.
Any religion you don't believe in will seem ridiculous and just incredibly weird to you.
I'm damn proud to say I smoked a fat joint and drank Manischewitz Passover wine on the steps of the mormon tabernacle. Screw them for "converting" dead Holocaust victims posthumously.
I'm also proud that I hold the world record in BoM-throwing: three city blocks, but I had an advantage -- I was in a 16th-floor hotel room at the time, and the wind was blowing at about 35mph with gusts to 50. I just wanted to see if it could fly....
Arnold C.,
Right on!!
Fellow "cultists" include Harry Reid.
You're right. All the same nonsensical wacky stuff that the Pilgrims believed in, and that the majority of our founding fathers -- you know, those guys who came up with things like the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and principles like freedom of speech, the freedom to pursue happiness (and heaven forbid, the freedom to worship as one pleases without being persecuted for it). If it's disturbing that religion plays such an outsized influence in our politics, then it should disturb you that our country's basic laws and governing principles were implemented by people who also allowed religion to play a major part in their lives.
Don't forget Sen Orin Hatch... also a Mor(m)on.
Interesting to see all the same activists telling all the same lies, and promoting all the same anti-Mormon bigotry. Interesting from a political standpoint, sad from a human standpoint. I'm pretty sure most of you know that what you are saying is not true. And most of us know why you are promoting hatred. Is your agenda really worth it though?
If whatever religion is what you practice and what you strongly believe in then you will surely practice those things in every day life, even at work. So to say that religion is seperate from the presidency would be a lie. If you dont practice your beliefs you would be living a lie.
"If you didn't practice your beliefs---then they would'nt be your beliefs"---would they?
Wow Warren
I want to belong to your church. Amazed at the pride you show for defiling someone's church. Do you also burn the Kuran, shred the Torah, rip up the Bible? And you are better than Mormons because? No intolerance on this post. You people........
