Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley have all touted the success of Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program based on the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Narconon says it is a non-medical rehabilitation program. Its methods include spending up to five hours a day in a sauna for 30 days straight and mega doses of the vitamin, Niacin. But three mysterious deaths in the last year have left families mourning loved ones who died while under the care of Narconon. The three deaths occurred at the rehab’s flagship facility, Narconon Arrowhead, located in Oklahoma.
Narconon International declined Rock Center's request for an interview, but in statements said, it has served "tens of thousands of people" and "three out of four Narconon graduates are able to live stable, drug-free lives."
The CEO of Narconon Arrowhead, Gary Smith, said that due to privacy laws, he cannot comment on the deaths, but said he and his staff are devastated by the loss of young lives.
"Our prayers are with the families of the deceased," said Smith in a statement.

Tom Cruise's former Scientology auditor speaks about Cruise/Kidman Divorce

My brother went to Narconon Arrowhead and I have to say that it is a horrible, misleading place. We didn't know where to turn when his addiction got so bad that it was going to kill him...my dad called a hotline and was told to send him to Narconon. We drove him there and they made sure to keep track of when we were showing up, and yes the young lady (a former student) was super nice, and told us all we wanted to hear, and the place was very put together! Well, my brother went into the withdrawal unit where we were not aloud to talk to him. He was freaking out the 2nd day and thought he was dying. He wanted to speak to a doctor and wanted medical detox and so they called my dad and told him what he was requesting and my dad said that if the doctor deemed it medically necessary that he would pay the EXTRA thousands of dollars for this medical detox. They called my dad back and said that the doctor said he would be fine. My brother NEVER saw a doctor. Yes he was fine and made it through the withdrawals but what if he hadn't?? They Never even allowed him to see a doctor and then lied to us! Then I went down to visit him and they didn't know I was coming, the place was total chaos...not like it was when they knew I was coming, and they were rude and refusing to let me see him without notice. They also would not allow him to enter into the sauna phase until they got another 6 grand from my dad. He ended up leaving that day with me, and has been clean on his own with his family, but I do not credit this to Narconon. I don't believe that talking to ashtrays and door knobs is going to get someone clean, it will just make them crazy(i.e. Scientologists). We were not aware that is was a scientology based program until after we took him there and I started doing research. They DO NOT have the medical knowledge needed to help people, these are all under paid ex-students who live there because they know if they go home that they don't have the willpower to not use again.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Does anyone know how she died ? Exactly what are the circumstances ? Why does the family blame the treatment center ? Why are there no facts in this article that make it clear how the center screwed up ? Being a treatment professional I am reluctant to blame a center because of its affiliation with a particular religion EVEN if that religion is Scientology , According to the Narconon Arrowhead website they have both State Accreditation and CARF .
For those of you not in the field of recovery .....CARF is very difficult to obtain and most treatment centers do not have it . This means that they have to meet and deliver a standard of care that conforms with these regulating bodies and exceeds the care at most treatment centers...Now IF they are not meeting these requirements then they should be investigated , but I am suspicious because of the lack of damning evidence I want to hear the how and why these people died before I jump to a conclusion .....
The following is taken from a review of certain investigations made in to the circumstances surrounding the accreditation provided by CARF:
It would seem the CARF accreditation was obtained under suspicious circumstances after the State denied them a certificate.
Sure you can claim that a secret cabal of psychiatrists, who are trying to control the world through the administration of lobotomies while we sleep and psych drugs in the water, were behind the original State's denial of certification but I'm more interested in the much more evident suspicious circumstances of the CARF accreditation.
As to the four deaths that have occurred relatively recently I think that's more than enough for the authorities to engage in a full and proper investigation of the service, its claims and its current licensing. And I think it's proper such articles appear to shine the spotlight on this matter until such investigations take place.
@DrRehab, how long have you been in Scientology and what OT level are you?
Well, if a "treatment program" consisting of excessive and dangerous sauna sessions and toxic doses of vitamins passed the CARF test, I dare say their standards aren't very high at all.
In other words, how hard could it be if Narconon got it?
Google: Lisa McPherson - read "Inside Scientology" by Janet Reitman. How did she die? Neglect - Narconon is run by other addicts that take a few courses written by L Ron Hubbard - nothing to do with addiction. They have unqualified staff that work for free babysitting addicts that spend $30,000 to $40,000 to be there.
If you google AA - you won't see anyone saying anything bad about the program. it is free - google: Joe and Charlie Big Book - it has everything an addict needs to break the chains that bind them - IT IS FREE and IT WORKS!
Scientology is a dangerous Cult and they have front groups that pose themselves as "help". Narconon - WISE, Criminon, ABLE - all designed to get people trapped in Scientology paying for their courses and auditing. They will also ask you to cash in your IRA and Stock Portfolio's and donate all of your money to the IAS - another Scam within Scientology. The Organization will not allow the members to see the books - they hide how much money they have - they act like they are poor and are sitting on billions of dollars. They make the public pay for everything - like "Volunteer Ministers" - people will donate their own time and money to help people hit by a tornado - then David Miscavige will sell them Yellow T-Shirts to where - and send his film crew to film these public helping - and then show videos to the staff of how SCIENTOLOGY helps - but they don't do anything - they take credit for everyone's hard work and money.
Go to a Scientology Church - sign up for a cheap course - see the legal papers you have to sign - promising you won't sue the church and taking all of your rights away. DON"T SIGN THEM - RUN OUT and get far far away.
Their are several problems with Narconon not least being it lies about its success rate, which it claims is at least 75%.
Although there are successes at Narconon independent checks suggest the rate is as low as 10% which is pretty poor especially given the fees they demand for their "high success" services. At the very least they should be subject to a proper independent State approved audit scheme to verify their claimed successes.
Narconon follows the cold turkey method, immediate withdrawal from the substance of addiction. This is the most stressful form of getting off a drug and is generally not used by mainstream drug rehab centres.
Narconon uses levels of vitamins and minerals that far exceed the recommended safe doses. Such doses can damage the body, especially of those who's body is already weak from an addiction.
Narconon staff are poorly trained often having no medical training, often being ex-patients, and yet they supervise a pseudo-medical treatment.
Narconon uses long periods in a sauna and exercise designed to sweat out the toxins, this is not only potentially damaging to patients but also...
Narconon's processes are based on bad science, pseudo or quack science, that is unsupported by proper peer reviewed studies.
Narconon's methods do work for some people but not nearly the number Narconon claim. Anyone who buys this expensive service based on the Narconon's claimed success rate is buying it based on unsubstantiated claims.

Careful Bob! You don't want to bring the wrath of Xenu, or that of Cruise and Travolta, down on you! You could totally tell this clown is "one of them". And please, keep up the good work!
Whoa! Mister Larry hasn't just drunk the kool aid, he's soaking in it up to his eyeballs!
You oughta get that liver checked, Larry. Just because the Purif is "religious" doesn't mean it's safe.
After getting strung out with Blavdor on planet Gleev I am so thankful that I had $20,000 left for several months of dry heat and eating slop.
Thank you Narconetics for ridding my body of toxins!
There is no better evidence of Scientology's brain-numbing effects than Larry's own posts on this forum.
Larry, do you honestly believe you are doing your point of view any good whatsoever by continually ignoring pertinent questions and changing the subject time and again?
All this does is reinforce the obvious conclusion that you have no answers for these pertinent questions, and want to divert the discussion using smoke and mirrors.
News flash...this doesn't work.
That you yourself can't see something so patently obvious says everything anyone reading this forum needs to know about you.
I await your response...I can't wait to get tarred with your "big pharmacology" brush. (Another of your goofy misapprehensions..."If I can point to a wrong over here, then it magically makes MY wrong OK, and we don't have to talk about it any more." Oh brother!)
Want to know more about the founder of Scientology, pulp science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard? The guy that people Scientologists believe was the greatest mind - scientist, spiritual leader, humanitarian - of the 20th Century (and probably, all eternity)?
Here he is in his own words....this will explain a lot about the cult and what is happening within the cult and even at Narconon facilities:
ON HIS TRUE MOTIVES AND CHARACTER:
ON THE USES OF SCIENTOLOGY, AND OTHER EXAMPLES OF HUBBARD'S VAST MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC "KNOWLEDGE":
ON HOW TO HANDLE SCIENTOLOGY'S CRITICS:
That's L. Ron Hubbard in his own words. Perhaps it helps explain the logic (or lack therof) of some of the Narconon defenders on this site.
From the article I read, this young women took drugs back to the rehab and OD'd. She was on a day trip from Narconon. How the heck did she get those drugs while on a day out with her family? Addiction really does take on weird behaviour. I feel awful that she died, like the others, but....
Scientology is a scam. Google Lisa McPherson, Debbie Cook, Jason Beghe, Jeffrey Hawkins, Maria Pia Gardini. Read "Inside Scientology" by Janet Reitman. Go to the scientology message boards and read what has happened to people that were part of this cult. Scientology cannibalizes its members of their money, shatters families and has its staff work for free. David Miscavige beats people - google "violence in Scientology". Is everyone lieing? REALLY - Scientology - REALLY?
Read about OT III - XENU was a lord of the galaxy and to handle population control - he flew people to this planet and blew them up in a volcano. Their spirits are attached to us - and you will pay $500,000 to "audit them off" on the OT levels in Scientology. Scientology has secrets it "sells" you - by the time you get to them - you will have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and it will take you away from your life, your family and your goals. There is no state of clear or ot - it is a scam. But - look - find yourself a clear and ot and look at them - watch them - see what you think about the "bill of goods" Scientology promotes.
Narconon is a scam. To get off drugs and alcohol - AA has the largest success rate in the world and it is FREE.
I know two people that tried Narconon - one alcoholic - came back home after spending $40,000 at Narconon - then died. The other - had prescription drug problem - was bled dry of all funds and it did not help - she went right back on the drugs. It is a scam.
Google: Aleistar Crowley - Thelema and O.T.O. This is what L Ron Hubbard sprinkled in Scientology - a few truths mixed with satanic stuff. Scientology symbol of the cross is "crossing out jesus on the cross". Google: Rosy Cross - look at the similarities. L Ron Hubbard says in his teaching that "symbols are low toned" so the members do not pay attention to the symbols. It is illuminati, satanic and dangerous. Look at them - decide for yourself. The members in do not know they have been swindled because they are trapped - money, time and family, friends all trapped by very covert methods. Sad state for these poor souls.
Do your own research. Narconon uses it's "clients" to work for free - charging patients $40,000 to stare at each other and not blink.
Scientology is a cult - but look for yourself and think for yourself.
God is free - you have alienable rights- to "speak freely" (but not against Scientology - look on the internet and see what Scientology has done to people that criticize them) - Scientology promotes this - but when you try to expose the crimes committed in Scientology - well, read all about the most litigious organization in the world. Lawrence Brennan - is the attorney that helped write "WHAT IS SCIENTOLOGY" - all written for "religious cloaking" purposes. Read his affidavit online. See what Scientology did to Graham Berry and Larry Wollersheim.
Scientology is classified as a religion and therefore hides its crimes. The staff work for free - the members spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for services the staff provide - google INT BASE - see where David Miscavige lives - he lives in a beautiful Villa - has a personal chef, personal trainer, BMW, Range Rover, Lexus, shooting range, tanning booth, Italian suits etc. The rest of the staff live on $50 per week and are treated badly. There is razor wire around this 500 acre ranch north of Las Vegas - the staff cannot leave - they are tortured. Read about Jeffrey Hawkins - he escaped along with thousands of others.
Ask youself what kind of "CHURCH" does this to people.
L Ron Hubbard is a con man - fraud - and a liar! But look for yourself and make up your own mind - if you have one left after Scientology. They tell the members that L Ron Hubbard was a doctor, nuclear physisist, scientist, war hero - a great man - he was married 4 times, his son Quentin, committed suicide - read about L Ron Hubbard Jr (Ron DeWolf) and his great grandson Jamie DeWolf. His family was shattered and destroyed.
Do your own research - the truth will set you free!
Funny how many Scientology resources are being thrown at defending a rehab that supposedly has nothing to do with Scientology, eh?..
For the Scientologists "handling" this forum:
YOUR DOUBT MAY BE VALID
Thought NBC/Rock Center did a shoddy job of reporting on the deaths of 3 patients at an Oklahoma drug rehab center run by Narconon/Scientology. While I am no adherent to Scientology and don't really think it is a religion--it is all about bio-feedback, mind control exercises, and the like--and that could be useful in a drug rehab setting. But your reporting was sensational fluff. Poor Harry Smith interviewed parents of the three deceased patients, all had serious problems--but the suggestion that the rehab center's "Scientology connection" was somehow hidden was absurd. None of the parents did any research before sending their children to a $30,000 rehab program? It did seem that the centers were lightly staffed with Medical personnel--but it was billed as a non-medical drug treatment program. Go figure. And the final "sensational" surprise--that the front office staff actually received commissions for their admissions? Shocking? More like--welcome to the world of private health care? Come on, just piling on the center because they are affiliated with Scientology, and stringing together unremarkable facts and circumstances to create the aura of sensation. Really shoddy.

Well I decided to watch the show tonight and I must admit that I was impressed. It was an interesting show of office politics. I could see that that the actual intention of the program was sensationalism, but somewhere in the last few days someone decided that NBC should try to pretend to be journalists and show both sides, barely, and be journalists. I want to do a walk through of how journalism works to protect from being sued themselves and still make ratings. The most interesting part of the show was the story on the little girl that recently died. If you notice, right before they bring the father out there is the injection of the fact that the the girl left the facility for one day, and then later died of an overdose. What's interesting is that NBC tied the strings together on all things that made Narconon look bad, but they left this as a placenta, just some after birth. Someone who is actually educated would go hum, see its basically critical thinking at maybe a 101 level. So I am going to tie the loose strings up. See I am a Narconon graduate and I know their policies. There is no way that you are getting out of the facility unless you have court, some medical problem outside their ability to handle or a death in the family. That little girl had none of those. Its all public knowledge and I checked; nothing. So the father somehow demanded that his daughter leave in the middle of treatment, he had to have pressed really hard and I am sure there is evidence of such. She obviously bought the drugs while in his care, read the police report, its public knowledge. By the way the really long post above was written by a girl probably very similar to one who used drugs with this dead girl in the facility; she was not staff at the time that this occurred, just another client getting help. Oh yeah, she also has a piece in this story, but we will get to that. So this little girl goes on a leave, against Narconon policy, and the dad makes a stink for several days to get her to be able to go. The employees of Narconon finally give in, and no doubt say something like, "don't let her out of your sight". What does dad do? Gives her some money, maybe she goes to go get her nails done or goes to some friend's house, but he, the father, allows her to leave his sight, exactly what he said he wouldn't do. So his daughter goes off and buys drugs, which the long poster above is a part of. See its a plan to get high in rehab. To anyone whose ever used drugs its the hey; if you can can get out of here can you get something? Anyway the young girl gets the drugs, while in dad's care, partly with dad's money and with the girl similar to the who posted above's money, again read the police report. Narconon does not do cavity seaches so, anyway, drugs are used. The television show said that she died unsupervised. For her to have been supervised, she obviously got caught by the employees at Narconon. I guess that "no drug training" that David Love talked about in the television show was wrong, cause obviously someone knew that she was high and put her in the withdrawal unit, that would be the only place you are supervised. Now here is where the drug addict mentality comes into play. Knowing that Narconon is run by quite a few ex-addicts, I know that no one is getting away with anything. Why do you think the 12-step program has sponsers?? We should attack that as well, I guess, maybe next. So she gets caught; right away. Dialated pupils, scatching, etc. Signs of opiate use are easy to detect. What most non-drug user don't know is that she has more drugs. Well the long poster above or someone similar convinces her that if Narconon catches you with more stuff you'll get in more trouble. The scared little girl, who is already high, decides to eat the rest of the pills. That's the addiction. She dies. Who is responsibile? She bought the drugs, while in dad's care. Some other client that pitches in drug money to get high with her gives her a scare, long poster above, Narconon let's her go on a leave with her family. Did Narconon neglect the girl? OSBI and the Sheriff investigated. The room where she passed away has 24/7 video surveillance. If that video showed anything there would have already been action. You tell me? There is video evidence and no action has been taken. The last and final thing that I will say is the hardest for me. I am very well educated and have always looked to our journalists. Call me naive. I am right on the verge of the information age. Don't get me wrong, I have more than a dozen IT certs, plus a degree in computer science and one in education, but I have always taken journalism to be a profession and a trusted source of information. After this I will no longer trust journalism; ever. The "Narcoonon ex-staff member" from Quebec that NBC featured on tonight's show is named David Love. He is an active member of Anonymous. Anonymous has been declared as a domestic terrorist by the FBI. He is known by the name of "Intelligence" on Anonymous's Site, "Why We Protest" and Intelligenceplus on "Youtube" You can easily google this to see that this is true. Never in my life would I see Cronkite or Rather have a member of a known terrorist group on their newscast. The worst part, in regards to David Love is that fact that he is on drugs. Anyone who has used drugs and NBC knows this to be true; cracked lips, too much makeup to cover up the skin condition and dialated pupils despite the studio lighting all is evidence of drug use. And NBC the makeup shows you knew. You should be ashamed.
I love all the black pr going on! Don't you fools realize you are digging your own grave even more? Truth will prevail, but sadly it won't bring those who died back.
Yeah, it's pretty hilarious all right. We get a long screed (with no paragraph breaks...thanks so much for making it easy to read) with a ton of speculation about what MIGHT have happened at the facility.
How about we go with what we KNOW? By Narconon's own admission, there was no doctor present at the facility when the young girl died. And they could not say whether so much as a nurse was present. This tells me all I need to know about how the facility is run.
Meanwhile, I see our friend Larry has fallen strangely silent. What's the matter, Larry? Did my words hit a little too close to home? I'm still waiting for a specific response.
My husband of 10 years is a Narconon graduate. He is the kindest most amazing person I know. He is responsible and does not do drugs. We are very grateful to all the Narconon staff who work so hard to salvage people from the horrors of drug abuse. You are all angels. God bless!
My husband is a Narconon graduate. We love Narconon and nothing anyone says here can change that. We have personal experience with Narconon and Narconon staff and the program. I also have a couple of friends that are Narconon graduates. They are doing great and are living drug free lives.
My experience is that Narconon saved my husband's life. He was almost dead. Now he is drug-free and sober. We are forever in their debt. Narconon staff are the most caring amazing people that you ever want to meet. We also have a couple of friends that are Narconon graduates, all are married and have a family and a good life.
I have trouble reading comments from people who haven't any experience with a Narconon program who try to trash it based on a TV show. Turn off the TV and open your eyes!! You're being led like sheep.
