Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley have all touted the success of Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program based on the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Narconon says it is a non-medical rehabilitation program. Its methods include spending up to five hours a day in a sauna for 30 days straight and mega doses of the vitamin, Niacin. But three mysterious deaths in the last year have left families mourning loved ones who died while under the care of Narconon. The three deaths occurred at the rehab’s flagship facility, Narconon Arrowhead, located in Oklahoma.
Narconon International declined Rock Center's request for an interview, but in statements said, it has served "tens of thousands of people" and "three out of four Narconon graduates are able to live stable, drug-free lives."
The CEO of Narconon Arrowhead, Gary Smith, said that due to privacy laws, he cannot comment on the deaths, but said he and his staff are devastated by the loss of young lives.
"Our prayers are with the families of the deceased," said Smith in a statement.

There are absolutely no independent, controlled studies of the Narconon Success Rate. None! In fact I have substantial evidence documents that substantiate those doing well, are quite low. To date, I have been unable to find other deaths in any Rehab Center that operates with qualified Medical Staff, with degrees in detoxification, and are "CERTIFIED" by Government and Health agencies. I have found a few other deaths in Rehabs, but these were under similar circumstances to how Narconon operates.

There is the percentage of graduates who are still off drugs a year after "graduating", which is a lot lower than Narconon's claimed success rate. Finishing the program doesn't mean they have kicked the habit.
Then there is the percentage of graduates who have permanent liver damage as a result of the toxic amounts of niacin on top of existing drug-related liver conditions.
Then there is the percentage of Narconon attendees who die. Are you counting them as graduates? Or is this somehow a fantasy?
Another interesting percentage is the percent of Narconon revenue that goes to the Church of Scientology.

I went to Narconon Arrowhead for treatment for alcohol dependency. I would never recommend anyone ever go there. If you or someone you care about needs help with drugs or alcohol please do thorough research before choosing a treatment program or facility. When I was in desperate need of help and looking for a treatment program the staff at Narconon Arrowhead mislead me and my family about what they offered and how the program was supposed to work so my family would lay down the $15k down payment. When I arrived at Arrowhead I found that the facility was dirty and falling apart. "Students" were treated like children and the place was run like a detention center. The most frustrating part of their deception was that they did not tell us the program was based on scientology. It wasn't until I had been there for several days that I realized this. I can tell you from my experience at Narconon and several other students that I keep in touch with that the program is not nearly as successful as they claim. Luckily I found effective treatment after I went to Narconon and was able to get and stay sober. Most of the classes at Narconon are run by former students. When I left Narconon I ran into a few of the instructors at the airport who were completely wasted. They invited me to join them at the airport bar to have drinks with them while we all waited for our respective flights. They knew that I had just gotten out of alcohol treatment at Narconon! They were the instructors of the program!!! Luckily I had the presence of mind to decline their offer. It makes me sick to think that they supposedly tried to help me and then offered to help me kill myself. Narconon is not only ineffective but is a danger to anyone who is battling addiction.

Yeah, sure, it's based on a methodology that Scientology came up with, who cares. They didn't try to recruit me and no, I'm not a Scientolgist, I am free from the addiction that led me to Narconon. Everything doesn't work for everyone and we need various forms of organizations to treat these problems - to each his own!

They hire ex-patients who have been through the program and don't know what to do when a medical situation arrives. They follow directions from a dead science-fiction writer called L Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology. Hence the many deaths a Narconons in Oklahoma and Georgia.
Documents from the Narconon program state that Hubbard had studied vitamins. These studies are nowhere to be found and their overall existence is suspect.

I am a graduate from Narconon, in no way shape or form do i support naconon. I truely believe it is a con and they pray on the weak and mislead people because they believe it is for "the greatest good". As a student they lied to my parents about speaking with my insurance company, telling them that my treatment was cover. It was a complete lie. As a student i never once worked with an actual registered addiction specialist nor did i ever once see a doctor or a real nurse or psychiatrist. When i was admitted to withdrawal i saw the nurses PA who only asked my drug history and took my blood pressure. For those of you who dont know your program consists or TR's "training Routines" these r supposed to help u improve your communication skills. The 2nd part is Sauna which is to rid your body of all the toxins due to drug use. Sauna for the record is not 30 days, it all depends on your case and when your case supervisor feels like all the drugs have left your body. They use niacin and vitamins to achieve this along with exercise and sweating in a sauna. As a student you do half days in the sauna and YES you are aloud out whenever you want. no one can force you to stay inside, they might yell at you to get back in but i was never once locked in. The third part is a combination of TR's again to prepare you for Objectives then Objectives it self. The purpose of objectives is to help locate yourself in present time and to become fully aware of your surroundings. OBJ's consist of following commands and delivering commands with your "twin" the person you are assigned to, you help each other get through it. So your pretty much looking around finding things, touching things, and finding things for hours and days and weeks until you and your twin complete all OBJ's. The final part of your program is the upper books, these r very much common sense books about morals and ethics, what healthy relationships should be, your "8 dynamics" which is 8 different compartments your life is set in too and how each one affects each other and how to manage them. YES all these books and everything you do is written and created by El Ron Hubbard. I obviously had a drug problem and had to come to rehab i found this rehab on the internet thur a toll free hotline that supposedly gave free advice. i had been to rehab before and done the 12 step programs but it was not working so i was looking for alternatives. Not once on the phone when i asked for information about the rehab did they say anything about Scientology, instead they lied to get me and my money, promising me that it was more like one on one therapy. i know for a fact that these hotline numbers posted on the internet narconon pays for them and your phone calls are directly routed to them. I know this because after i graduated i dated a staff member who told me and not only did he tell me but current staff members who had befriended me told me as well. It was in fact very inappropriate i became involved with a staff member, at the time i was newly clean and vulnerable. Dating him violated the HIPPA ACT, narconon found out about are relationship and gave him 2 options to come to another center or quit. He chose to go to the other center, they did not give him the option to even contact me, even tho he did and after a week he decided to leave narconon. We then started a very temultuous relationship, i soon relapsed, as did he. I believed at first it was good for me to date him cause he had been sober for 3 years and had a great foundation. Once we both relapsed he was very violent towards me and had the cops called on him multiple times, i first thought it was the drugs that caused these violent out bursts but even when we were clean he emotionally and physcially abused me. Everytime i tried to leave he threaten to reveal that i had relapsed to my family and friends. I OD'd and he took pictures and video of me unconscious and threaten he would put them on the internet and send them to my family. He also told me if i ever told anyone about his drug use he would black mail me and no one would believe me anyways cause he had proof of my drug use. After a few months of using drugs we made the decision to stop using drugs and we did, it was difficult at first but we did it with the support of each other. A couple months after that he began secretly using behind my back while i remained clean. In the meantime our relationship was fueled by jealousy and contempt for one another. In the end he decided to return to narconon. The executives who worked there offered him a free 3 month retread as a student and the possibility to return as staff afterwards. I hate narconon and how they lied to my parents but if i never would have went there i wouldn't have met some of the most significant people in my life today that help mold me into the confident sober women i am today. i want people to know the truth about narconon and then base their decision on how they feel about it. So people do your research and do not only read people bashing narconon but read the success stories. Their success rate is complete bull@!$%# but if they can help save at least one persons life it means something cause the success rate for addicts staying clean is very small. On the other hand tho would you really want to send your son or daughter to a rehab where there is possibly a staff member, someone who they are supposed to trust and be able to come too, who wants to take advantage of them when they are becoming newly sober and are very vulnerable? and what kind of rehab lets an ex staff member return after quitting for a female patient and almost killing her by not taking her to a hospital or calling 911 but instead leaving her unconscious for hours barely breathing and then video taping her and smoking meth all night long next to her motionless body. When just a couple months before that he was her counselor at the rehab her parents paid good money for her to become sober and learn how to maintain sobriety. Just a thought..... and for those of you who read this i am sober today and take full responsibility for my relapse and drug use.

Medical literature for and against Narconon is very scarce. The
United States National Institute on Drug Abuse, based in Maryland, does not know
of a single peer reviewed piece scientific literature to support the program.
The only generally-known report to substantially address the medical validity of
Narconon's theories appears to be that produced by the Board of Mental Health,
State of Oklahoma in December 1991. Its findings do not express much support for
Narconon:
"The Narconon drug treatment modality treats all drug
addictions the same. No scientific evidence was produced to show that all drug
addictions are properly treated in the same manner ...
One only has to look at how Lisa McPherson was treated by her fellow Scientology parishioners that led to her death. This cult is scary evil and needs to be investigated and held responsible for the hundreds or even thousands of deaths they have directly caused. L.
