Rock Center
In the neonatal unit at The Children's Hospital in Ft. Myers, Fla. five of the 55 newborn babies were born in withdrawal from the prescription drugs their mothers were taking while pregnant.
What's happening in Florida is happening nationwide. In hospitals across America, there’s an epidemic of babies born experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the prescription painkillers their mothers were addicted to. To ease the babies’ withdrawal symptoms, they are sometimes given morphine and methadone.
Rock Center correspondent Kate Snow reports this Thursday, July 5 at 10pm/9c.

I have seen the promos for Thursday night's Rock Center. I think it will be very interesting to see this report. There is another aspect to children who have been born addicted to drugs. Their teenage years. Speaking from personal experience, these children can have problems like ADHD, oppositonal defiant disorder, lack of motivation, and executive functioning limitations that affect their family life, their ability to do well in school, and they often have addictions of their own. When I talked to someone in the court system about what my adopted son was going through, she asked me if he had been born addicted to drugs and when I said yes, she gave me the impression that they see these kids way too often. I love my son to pieces and have been working with him through his struggles. It has been very hard and he has been sober for 18 months now. He still does not do well in school and has no motivation. I would like to see some research and reporting on what it is like for these kids and what can be done to help them. Sometimes we feel like we are at our wits end knowing what to do for him.
I have seen the promos for Thursday night's Rock Center about babies born addicted to prescription drugs. I think it will be very intersting to see this report. I have a teenage son who was born with meth and cocaine in is system. His birth mother was addicted to drugs and homeless when he was born. She abandoned him while he was in foster care. He came to us when he was 2 months old. The thing that might be intersting for you to research and report on is what happens to these babies when they get older. There can be many developmental problems and also problems with addiction later on in their lives. Our son has ADHD, severe lack of motivation, executive functioning limitations, oppositional defiant disorder, anger issues, and has become addicted to drugs himself. At this point, he is 16 years old, 18 months sober, has no motivation to do anything, and does not do well in school at all. We love him to pieces and struggle with him every single day. I would love to have someone research how to help these kids succeed in their livesbecause we often feel like we are at our wits end knowing what else to do to help him.
It is too bad that we cannot pick our parents, or how they decide to raise us...
Would it make more sense to stop giving to the people who abuse the system, not just themselves? Why can government make more educated ways to give to the needy? If someone is in need of assistance make it so they have to be tested for drugs everytime they get a charity, and everyone int he household including children. We need to stop making everything FREE. Earn what you need. You need EBT, then you have to have a clean drug test. You need housing assistance, clean drug test. Healthcare,... need I say more? Why not add to that you have to get your diploma or GED if you do not already have one? People need to be held accountable for their actions and mistakes, their children shoudn't have to.
I know there are people who trully need help, but too many expect it. Which in turn makes it hard, or even prevents, for good hardworking citizens to get in the programs. Programs should also expire. I know of people who have been on EBT, medicaid and housing assistance longer than they have ever held a job. Oh yes, and why I am on my rant, SSI should not be available to those who do not want to pay child support or work because they have better things to do like sit in their behinds and drink their free name brand soda pop and eat the T-bone steaks. All the while we who work hard and still can't pay the bills, eat ramen noodles and drink water.
A drug addicted child did not have choice, the parentS should be responsible and held accountable for contributing to minor and child abuse and every other charge there is!
It angers me that there was nonchalant reference to the fact that these drug addicted children may well have LD or ADHD. The implication is that children that have these DXs have this background and frankly this is not at all the case in many, many circumstances. In deference to the many children and families who have children with LD/ADHD please clarify this comment. Please note, I am not judging these women/families in the slightest, this comment simply needs to be clarified in fairness to the millions of children/adults with these afflictions that have not had this background. Thank you.
Since the sopostit doctor is speaking of a fake learning disablity "ADHD" that was made up by drug compaines to sell more drugs and get more money in their pockets; that dose not say he/they can be very good, if not totaly bad! Dose he really care at all? Their fake ADHD was dreamed up in 1980. They could not get doctors to prescribe it to Hyperactive kids that it was made for, because it was found to be more dangouris than leaving the child alone and just letting them grow. Then they grew/grow out of it. So drug companies made their fake condistion adding ADD, that is permanent. It has three maJor symtoms and NO drug can help it. One of it's major symptoms is they are all bad spellers!....
I just watched your Babies born addicted.Thank you for stressing that we should not be mad at the mothers, addiction is at epidemic levels, yet new drugs keep becoming ;available...there are clinics on street corners that you can get pain killers no problem...What is our government , FDA ect doing about making it impossible for our children to get there hands on these drugs. We need to do more, we need to educate our children about the effects ....My son who is a addict told me ...Ya mom they told us that drugs were bad and addictive...but honestly I didnt know what to be addicted really meant...I had no Idea the power ....From the mouths of our children, we need to listen to them, and go back to the chalk board, to stop this from happening.
As a parent of a addict, I do NOT wish this journey on anyone....To see your child slip away from you , and not be able to do a thing...is beyond anything a parent wants to experience. Please keep reporting, and researching.. My son is in recovery, and clean, so for me today is a good day, and I am grateful.
Who how times have changed in 56 years. I remember the Media and newspapers called the ghetto and places like Harlem where drugs were brought into those poor areas. As many got addicted to drugs it was labeled to just poor minorities. I can still hear my grandmother saying don't use drugs. Now I get to see a criminal Governor's first order of business was opening the Florida ports to drug dealers. Things are so bad the federal agency in Florida can't handle the problems. Other States see more drug traffic because of the Florida Ports. As the nation looks to Texas/New Mexico/Arizona boarders the large amount of drugs incoming in the Florida Ports and the citizens using drugs are to much for law enforcement to stop. The money comes with the drugs and elected officials take the money and look the other way. Many people say it's easier to get drugs then get a cigarettes. The story of Florida is one in every State and it's claiming the Middle Class youth and lowering among minorities. As families look for help with health care the GOP is looking to repeal the Bill and allow these Moms and their babies with no care.
