Sister Maria Gomez Valbuena, a Spanish nun, this week refused to testify in a Madrid court where she is facing charges related to her alleged role in a baby-trafficking network that operated in Spain over several decades in the latter part of the 20th century.
The charges against Valbuena of illegal detention and falsification of public records follow a recent Rock Center investigation of Spain’s “stolen babies” scandal which featured kidnapping allegations against Valbuena.
Valbuena, now in her 80s, is the first person to be charged amid allegations that networks, often consisting of doctors and clerics, stole babies from their mothers and sold them to other families in a practice that began in the 1940s and lasted until the early 1990s. More than a thousand cases have been filed with Spain’s attorney general.
During her court appearance on Thursday, crowds of mothers claiming their newborns were stolen reportedly chanted, “shameless” at the nun. Shortly after refusing to testify, the nun issued a statement denying the allegations. "Under no circumstance have I ever had any knowledge of the separation of a newborn from his or her biological mother under force and threats,” she stated. “It disgusts me to the depths of my being. I consider it inadmissible and unjustifiable."
Maria Luisa Torres, who testified last week and was featured in Rock Center’s report, claims that Valbuena stole her child from her shortly after she gave birth in 1982.
At the time, Torres was the mother of a two-year-old child and separated from her husband when she became pregnant by another man, something unacceptable in the conservative Spanish society of the time.
“My plan was to go ahead with the pregnancy and keep my baby,” Torres told Rock Center’s Kate Snow.
She claims that when she went to deliver her baby girl, she was anesthetized and slept through the whole delivery. When she woke, Torres says, she was told that her baby had died. Refusing to believe this news, Torres says she snuck out of her room and saw the newborn girl sleeping in the nursery. According to Torres, when she demanded her baby, Sister Maria Gomez threatened her.
“She said either you shut up, and don't ask any more questions, or I'll take both your children from you and you'll go to jail,” Torres said. “Blackmail.”
Through associates at the convent where Valbuena resides, the nun declined Rock Center’s repeated requests to take part in an interview in which she could address these allegations.
Torres said that after losing her baby, she felt helpless and like a piece of herself was missing. But this past year, three decades after the birth, Torres read about the campaign of families searching for lost children and began searching for her daughter. Unknown to Torres, the daughter who had been separated from her also had a strong feeling that she was a stolen child.
In 2011, Torres was reunited on a television show with her daughter, Pilar Alcalde.
“I jumped up and hugged her as though I'd known her my whole life. It was beautiful,” Alcalde told Rock Center.
Torres called it “a miracle.”
“I have feelings of happiness because I found her, but above all, feelings of rage and hatred,” she said.
Alcalde’s adoptive parents testified Friday.

Although the Catholics were created by a lifelong Pagan as a response to the imminent loss of all political power (Constantine during the last breaths of the fall of the Roman Empire) as a way to attempt to secure SOME power over people whilst not having to maintain a huge empire with all of it's expenses and still recieving taxes from it's members, still fools continue to follow it's heirarchy. Any and all religions can go beyond the bounds of what is right, fair or just when some decide they know what is better for you then what you want or think; as proved time and time again with various missionaries, priests, nuns and other religious figures when they have forced their belief system on others. The boarding schools the Jesuits and others created for Native American and Eskimo children where they took children away from their families, tribes and villages and forced them to give up their culture, language and traditions; sometimes with harsh punishments for not doing what they were told they needed to do. Missionaries have gone into places and destroyed the way of life indigent people knew and frequently left behind destruction of a way of life. I do not tar all such people with the same brush, but this story is but one of many where those who were supposed to be people of God did horrific things to others "because they knew best". I'm willing to bet that was a big part of the reasoning behind their actions. Truly shameful behavior by those who are supposed to help and not do harm.

An individual behaved inexcusably, violated umpteem commandments....the fact that the individual was also a nun should be a reminder to us that we are all flawed people, we all do things that are wrong, nobody is immune to temptations. Rather than condemning a religious order because a person behaved as a human being, realize the purpose of that order, which is to offer guidance and support for how we should be behaving, and the assurance that our mistakes and failures do not have eternal consequences. Our president has lied to us....does that mean that we eliminate the office of President or eliminate our government as the root cause of the lies, or do we accept that a person did something wrong while serving as president and move on.
Obiviously people who do these type of evil things do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ or our God, because if they did, they could never commit these sins against such incident people and children. I would say then that 99.9999999% of people calling themselves Christians are hypocrites and all churches are apostate. Case in point, all of the American Christians who think that God "gave" the white man this land, that we Native peoples were/are lesser beings who didn't/don't deserve to live here, and thus our removal by war, enslavement, legal chicanery, and genocide was God-sanctioned and the continuing effort to destroy us as ethnically-distinct peoples is just and merciful.
In the Bible it is made quite clear that any treaty made between individuals or peoples is sacred in His eyes, and yet every treaty ever made between Native tribes and whites/white governments has been broken, often several times. When we demand that the treaties be upheld or that things that have been stolen from us returned, Christians are right there railing against our demand for justice as being unfair and unjust because they would lose land/resources/etc that they've held for "generations" as if the 12,000 yrs and more we held it doesn't count at all against 200-300 years.
To most of us Native Americans, what "Christians" say is not to be trusted, let alone listened to in the first place. The vast majority if not all of Christians are, as Jesus said, a brood of vipers, wolves disguised as sheep, and sons of hell who can't get into heaven but do their damndest to make sure that no one else does either.

Every one of you who calims to have a "personal relationship with Christ" may as well be saying you have a "personal relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte". This also happens in the U.S.A. A woman who did housework for me had her children taken from her by the social services agencies because she was poor. She was young and vulnterable at the time and felt helpless in dealing with the authorities. Later she fought tooth and nail to find her 'lost' children and reconnect with them.
Whether in Spain involving a nun or in USA involving our social services, this is bad and tragic. I bet you that both entities would give somewhat similar reasons for their actions.
WHen i was 7 i was forced by a catholic family into a catholic boarding school, where nuns beat me, and the priest raped me in my anus, I was told that it was between him and God and for my own good. There was a long period of time when people were NOT given a choice, it was either convert to Christianity or be killed. My people were on the receiving end of some of that. In fact the fact that we weren't "christians" was used to justify taking our lands and resources as well as our lives.
Even now there is the Dominionist movement in evangelical churches which would throw out the US Constitution and replace our secular democratic republic with a theocracy where all non-Christians and those Christians not following the proscribed beliefs system would be required to convert or be deported or imprisoned. Children would be taken rfom their parents to be raised in "true"Christian homes. All other religions would be banned as well as any behaviors and activities that were determined to be immoral. Education would be restricted to what was Biblically-appropriate, and you'd better believe that women and minorities would be stripped of full citizenship and rendered legally incapable of self-determination in eduction, careers, marriage, or where they wanted to live. I am truly sorry for all the families that have been torn apart because of this situation. However, as a Christian myself I want to say that these practices are NOT what Jesus would have done! It is easy to attack a specific religion, whether Catholic or Muslims, but instead, let's look at the individuals. So happy to hear that the children are now being reunited with their natural parents where possible. No human being should have to live through something like this. Actually, I may get flack for this but in my opinion, it is because of God that this situation came to light and the reunions are occurring.
Feeling sorry for victims of religious/social injustice is all well and good but a bit inadequate don't you think? There is NO WAY to give these people back all of those years that were stolen from them. How about stepping up to the plate and offering something more substantial than platitudes...like becoming an activist for social justice?
God didn't create poverty, slavery, or most forms of human misery, either but His Name has been used to justify all of them. If the 'haves" shared of their wealth instead of hording, poverty could be pretty much wiped out or at least lessened to the point that people weren't going to be hungry every night, or going without medical attention, or people and families going homeless. But no, most christians here in this country blame the poor instead of helping them because they're too darned selfish and greedy. When Jesus commanded His followers to feed the hungry,heal the sick, visit the prisoner, uplift the oppressed, and help those in need He didn't attach any codicils such as "but only if you feel like it" or "only if you feel they deserve it" or "only if it's not going to inconvenience you".

Actually Jesus is the Greek version of Yeshua or Yoshua, just as John is the Greek version of Yonas and James the Greek for Yames, all of which are Hebrew or Arameic. As far as church goes, being Native American I don't ascribe to it. I have a deep relationship with the Creator without the artificial constructs of churchianity. As my white grandfather told a preacher who asked why he didn'tgo to church, "The Good Lord and I have a good relationship. I know who He is, He knows who I am, and we both know what's expected of us. Religion would just mess that up." Faith on the other hand is a whole 'nother thing, a one-on-one relationship with the Maker of us all, and you don't need church or religion for that. God Himself has placed lessons of Himself throughout all of His Creation and in our own hearts. Who better to teach us?

It's impossible to imagine that a catholic nun would dedicate her devoted life to steal a baby from a single mother because of the enormity of the task itself. (1) The catholic church can't just steal babies from single mother because single mother don't have good finances or some other excuses. (2) Even if its good for the newborn, the volume of newborn from single mothers in spain per year makes the job very difficult.
So, why do it? Answer: what is the likelyhood the newborn's father are catholic priests taking advantage of single mothers in Spain and Sister Maria Gomez is the cleanup lady akin to the cleanup crew working for the Mob? There's no evidence because all she has to do is blackmail and lie to defenseless single mother and steal the newborn. Then she would goto church and make daily prayers. FYI, if you were to read my post again. You will see that Sister Maria Gomez predictably pray often as part of her holy devotion. It is therefore very easy for a devoted nun to find evil in Jesus's suffering to match the evil in part of her life. ba da bing, whoop there it is, she feels herself wash free of sin thanks to the forgiveness message from the teaching of Jesus to repeat again for years to come until caught in 2012. If you had ever had a child taken away from you then you would know why this is big news. It doesn't in any way diminish the other huge stories we should also be hearing about which seem to get swept under the carpet, but neither do they take away from this one. No other species on this planet treats their female population like these religions do... females aren't prevented from learning to hunt, to learn about their habitat, or to roam wherever they please... the males of their herds, dens, flocks etc. don't keep them under lock and key... they are free as we all were created to be... to think, feel, act and express ourselves as we see fit.
While I have no doubt there are many lessons and morals to be gained from these structured entities and their aged scripture... life isn't to be dictated by anyone EVER... there is only one being that can force you to do anything... and he chooses to GIVE us CHOICE... rather than decry absolution.
So, to everyone involved in a religion... I don't care which, your times are all up... and elightenment is here. More people everyday are starting to see the truth... and it is awe inspiring when you finally grasp it... my own struggle lead me from hardship to happiness... and it came in the form of true revelation... that you are your own walking house of religion... be true to yourself and treat EVERYONE else that way... and doors will open, good fortune and health abound, and good friends and family blossom... all without a stitch or organized, archaic religios stigma.
RIP Faith... you are no longer the defacto idealism of enlightenment. Come friends! Live! Love! Prosper and Multiply!

Whoa!!a lot of anger here on this story.I know the Vatican has their monitors who read all the stories involving the catholic society are buzzing around saying"how we going to tell the pope this one"
It's over. We, hopefully, are on the alert for it happening again. People should not be exploited like this for any reason. Those that do this are monsters.
