Jin Xing is one of the brightest personalities in China today. She’s a film star, talk show host and celebrated dancer, but it’s her life off stage that’s propelled her into the spotlight. She was the first person to have a sex change operation in China, and go public with it. Seventeen years later, she’s become a cultural icon in China and the government even uses her as an unofficial ambassador of the arts.
“They want to tell the world, ‘We do have an independent, free artist like Jin Xing,” Jin explains.
Jin recently embarked on her first U.S. tour with her company, Jin Xing Dance Theatre. The premiere was in New York City, the place where she studied modern dance 20 years ago. Now 44, her return to New York fulfilled a promise she made and kept for two decades.
“When I left New York, I said, ‘I only come back [to] New York with my own dance company. I don’t even come back [to] visit,” Jin told Rock Center’s Kate Snow.
Her return to New York was also the first time she experienced the city as a woman. The last time she was here, she was a man.
From an early age Jin loved to dance and perform, but he felt different from the boys around him. He preferred playing with girl’s toys and wished he was a girl like his sister. One night during a thunderstorm, he ran outside in the hopes that lightning would strike him and transform him into a girl. To his dismay, nothing happened.
When Jin was nine, he was selected to attend a military school for dance, but his parents didn’t approve. When they refused to send him, he went on a hunger strike for two days.
“It worked. Then my mom said, ‘Okay, if you made a decision, you have to write a paper, promising you won’t regret your choices and you won’t put that regret on your parents in the future,” she said.
At the military school, Jin learned to fire a machine gun and blow up a bridge using a bomb, but most importantly, he learned to dance. The dance instruction was strict. The military instructors would tie each student’s leg to a vertical column so that they were forced into the splits.
“We are screaming and shouting, but the teachers, our teachers, are sitting there reading a morning newspaper and looking, ‘five more minutes.’ I think, according to America or western law, this is completely child abuse, no doubt,” she said. “But in China culture, you have to sacrifice.”
Jin threw himself into dancing. He thought if he could only become a famous dancer, people wouldn’t pay attention to his personal life. By the time he was 18, he had won acclaim as the best male dancer in the People’s Liberation Army. He was selected to come to America to study modern dance in New York City. He arrived barely knowing any English and said at first he felt overwhelmed.
“I was standing on Madison Avenue with my backpack…I see people rushing beside me. Then I say, ‘Wow, this is my city,” she said. “I [felt] a little bit lost because I was the best dancer of China…[but] nobody knows.”
Jin quickly found his footing, training with top tier dance companies and emerging choreographers like Mark Dendy.
“Jin Xing was amazing, is amazing, still amazing,” Dendy said. “There’s always a look in the eye when someone’s really, really great and we just say, ‘They’ve got it.’”
Dendy said that Jin’s speed and ability to use space set him apart as a dancer.
“Pirouettes, grand jetes… he had, she had amazing air,” Dendy said. “It’s the ability to go up in the air and have a cup of coffee and come down.”
Jin describes this time in New York as liberating but confusing. He began to date men but something didn’t feel right. He had big questions about his sexuality and his identity as a man. He wasn’t sure if he was gay, or if he was transgender and what should he do about it. He left New York for Europe, but after a few years he made up his mind to return to China and undergo sex reassignment surgery. Jin was 28 when he underwent the operation.
Jin’s mother struggled with her son’s decision. She was worried the surgery wouldn’t go well, and afraid for her son’s future. Jin was even more scared to tell his father, a former military officer and member of China’s secret police, about his decision to become a woman.
Jin told his father, “I become a woman. I become your daughter.” Jin’s father was silent for a moment, then he got a cigarette out and said, “Okay, finally matched.’”
Her father said, ”Strangely enough, 20 years ago, I look at [you], I was wondering, I have a little boy, but you behave everything like a little girl. So after 28 years, you find yourself, congratulations.”
Jin Xing became one of the first people to have a sex change operation in China.
The surgery went well, but there were complications. The operation damaged Jin’s left leg and she feared she might never dance again, but three months after the surgery, she was back on stage in Beijing.
Her performance prompted some to complain about Jin to Beijing’s cultural bureau.
“The best male dancer becomes a female dancer,” she said. “I think people tried to find different ways to find an explanation for me.”
Following her surgery, some said that Jin had sacrificed her body for dance or to make it more acceptable for her to date men. Jin quickly dismissed those claims.
“It’s completely for myself. This is my life. I have to [be] honest with my life,” she said.
Jin said at first, the Chinese authorities didn’t address her sex change.
“They stand back a little bit. One side, they appreciate me, still appreciate that I’m a good dancer,” Jin said. “But somehow, they have no comment, no opinion about my personal choices.”
In 2000, Jin Xing’s life changed again. She became a mother, adopting her son Leo, then her daughter Vivian and lastly, her little boy Julian.
She was content as a single mom, until she unexpectedly fell in love with a German man on a flight from Paris to Shanghai.
“I’m in the lounge and I’m waiting for boarding and a Chinese lady appears at the lounge. I wouldn’t say low key. She was wearing a long leather coat, miniskirt, leather boots, Louis Vuitton bag on one side and a Chihuahua in her hand,” said Heinz Gerd Oidtmann.
The two were seated next to each other on the plane and quickly connected. The next day, Oidtmann called Jin and asked her out.
On their first date Jin revealed to Oidtmann that she was once a man.
“I was shocked,” Oidtmann said. “This image of a sexy, attractive woman was gone and I was really confused.”
Oidtmann took a day to sort his thoughts but he returned to Jin and said that he wanted to continue to see her. A year later, he proposed and they’ve been married for seven years. But Oidtmann admits it’s still strange for him to see photos of his wife as a man.
“Somehow, I’m not really connected to that part of her life. I want to keep pure the female image that I have of my wife and it is very purely a female impression that I have of her,” he said.
It’s been 17 years since her sex change, and Jin Xing’s star continues to rise. In addition to dancing and choreographing, she’s acting in films and appearing on China’s versions of Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. Her popularity continues to grow and the regime that was once quiet on her sex change now pushes her out front as a cultural leader.
“They give me the space to become who I am in China as an independent artist and [at the] same time, I’m getting a lot of positive image [for China] as an artist, as a cultural ambassador for China,” Jin said.
The Chinese government, while more comfortable with Jin, still monitors her closely. She says the government watches what she posts on China’s version of Twitter and keeps a close eye on her dancing.
“In China, before all the performing arts are only used for propaganda use, but if the art form [is to] become independent, that takes a little time,” Jin said of China’s censorship.
And while Jin acknowledges that some people come to see her perform because of her personal transformation, it doesn’t seem to bother her.
“If my personal story can bring [the] public into the theater, I’m already successful,” she said. “Because after one and a half hour, they’re talking about my dancing, they’re not talking about my sex change.”

That's actually wrong. Our brains develop as a certain gender.
The case with transsexuals is that their body develops as one gender but the brain the other.
There was actually a case involving twin boys where one of them had his penis damaged during circumcision and the parents decided to raise him as a girl, and had operations to change him into a girl. However, he claimed he never felt right as a girl, and when he found out he changed back to a man. However if I recall he had so many emotional problems (probably due to his childhood) that he ended up committing suicide.
On a different note, if the job for choosing the front page news is still available (obviously you need some help here), I will be willing to work for free.

A woman indeed. Medical science has achieved wondrous capabilities. However, changing one's sex is not one of them. Medical science can certainly, through surgical and chemical manipulation, present the appearance of the chosen sex, but the subject remains the gender that they were born.
There are differences in DNA and skeletal structure and certain other gender specific biology that remain. Thus, the gender conversion is purely superficial.

No matter what he/she looks like, the genes are still XY. I understand that you could not necessarily tell by looking, although the Adam's apple would probably be a dead give away, but you cannot change genetics. If he/she were a competitive athlete then he/she would have to compete as a man in the Olympics. That said, I could care less since it seems to make he/she happy.

Wow...just...wow. Not only you, but others that I've read here. You just have no idea what you are talking about. Genetics does not determine anything besides what hormones your mother's body normally exposes you to in development. I am a transwoman, and I detest with every fiber of my being that anyone would consider me, or any other transwoman, a man. Your gender is determined by you, not your genetics. I may be XY, but you could not tell the difference if you tried between me and any other woman. Simply put, your body looks the way it does (in terms of typical male/female differentiation) because your mother's body exposed you to a set of hormones, which developed one system and not the other, and that system continues to expose your body to that same set of hormones throughout your life. There is diseases like androgen insensitivity syndrome where a person is XY, but is entirely female, you literally cannot tell the difference unless you realize that said person is infertile. Anyone who has made comments that are so obviously hateful and backwards should be condemned for it. Those types of comments are the reason why me, as a transwoman, has fewer rights in this country than pretty much any other group. I am personally sick of people saying that I am not a woman, because so far, no one has been able to tell the difference between me an any XX person.

Gender is in your head. There are two types of sex, genetic and physical. You cannot change genetic sex obviously, but you can change physical and your gender is entirely your view of yourself. At least use the correct terms for what you're arguing for. Honestly, after surgery if you had sex with a transwoman it is very unlikely that you could tell the difference unless she told you, so for all intensive purposes for most things you would use a vagina for, it's irrelevant if it came from surgery or birth.

I do respect your opinion about who you might be attracted too--of course, we all have our own about beauty and attractiveness (height, weight, eye and hair color, sex, skin color, etc, etc.).
That said, if you would, please consider not confusing the value of the person inside, --I don't mean just transgendered people--with their possible "flaws" of physique:
How are you going to judge a Chromosomal female, born with differently formed genitals? Perhaps with a vagina that is completely closed? Not fully formed? Not formed at all? She gets a surgery and it would also be "surgically altered". How about a female with genitals that are larger than average? There thousands of bodies on this planet, thousands of examples of body differences, some which the folks decide to have surgery, and some who choose to not have surgery. Before you make a black and white judgement about ALL people who opt for a surgery, please take some time to educate yourself about the many types of people there are. Many aren't as lucky as you to be born into a body that they can be themselves in. (even things like cleft palette, or differently formed ears, or different development in puberty, that can make life more difficult for that person just to be who they are because others are distracted by their apparent differences, etc.)
Just for further info:When a child is born, Some Dr. (who is human and prone to human error too) designates whether you have a boy or a girl. Sometimes, it is NOT apparent, and sometimes, unless an actual test is done, you won't know, and may even have an xxy. The only person who can really tell you who they are, is the grown child themselves. Surgeries directed by the doctors are sometimes done to the wrong gender.

Look, Brooke and Bina - maybe it's a guy thing, I dunno; but there is something about the idea of a vagina that's really a penis that has a certain "shudder factor" to it.
It doesn't make a transgender person any less of a real woman/man on the inside, but to those of us who know about it, there's very little anyone could do to make us forget that fact. To me, a penis is a penis no matter what it looks like. Your "deformed genitals" argument is a straw man, since a malformed vagina is still a vagina. It's not about the appearance of it. It's about the fact that it's a visually altered penis.
You know there is really no difference between the two physiologically. The penis and clitoris are essentially bigger/smaller versions of one another, with the penis having the urethra routed through it instead of coming out under it. So you could see ALL vaginas as altered penises, or all penises as altered vaginas. All of it comes from the exact same starting materials and it just worked to look differently in development.
Brooke, I'm aware of the anatomy. I'm aware of the hormones released during pregnancy that cause one or the other to develop.
But...
It still doesn't change the fact that it used to be a living, peeing, ejaculating piece of man junk before it was altered to look like a vagina. Think of it this way: it's like natural casing sausage. Sure, a natural casing sausage might be delicious, but that doesn't change the fact that it used to be an intestine filled with pig feces. And that's why I don't eat natural casing sausage. I know what it used to be, and I have no interest in putting it in my mouth. Same goes for artificial vaginas.
I think all Chris is trying to say is that it would be difficult for him to separate her life as a man from her life as a women in this case. unlike Jin's husband i would also find it hard to separate her life as a man from what her life is today.

Fair enough, Chris. Like I said, everyone has their own idea's of attractiveness. Just curious, so do you think penis's are just gross? Or is it just the operation that gives you the shudders? (I don't think it's "inside out" what actually happens in trans surgery, but I could be wrong).
Just to clarify, there are females born without actual vaginas. A surgically created one would be completely artificial. (tho, not made from an altered penis...that's true). That said, an act of intimacy with the artificially created vagina would be, perhaps no worse than say, a plastic doll with vaseline, or maybe even a hand job...
So, I guess what it comes down to is that its really all in your head, right? Fair enough :) everybody has their own limits.

How about the fact that this is just plain wrong to change how one was born. Why have we become so "enlightened" as to think this is acceptable in any form?. This reminds me of the film called Beautiful Boxer. It's one of the best films I have ever seen and was really touched by the story of this little boy that new who he was deep down inside from a very young age. A women.

Seriously, many of these comments make me sick! Identity for everyone, whether they be sexual, spiritual, mental, is a very difficult thing for many people to find. I finally found my identity as a human being, and not have to put up with certain expectations from my family, because I am a woman. I can do anything I want to with my life, whether that be a job traditionally meant for men, or be the housewife I have been the last 18 months. She struggled with who she was, and finally feels normal, feels like the human she was meant to be. Why is that such a problem with people? Because she used to be a man? Mistakes happen on the time in the womb, why not let those who can correct it, do so in peace.
I also find it more amazing that officials in China had no issue with it, but people in this country do. Shame. Shame on all of you!
The problem steph is that these things used to be kept to ones-selves. I swear with time we are no longer evolving but de-volving. Nobody ever heard of Autism or peanut allergies or lactose intolerence a few decades ago, but now these things seem to be rampant. Sex reassignment used to be considered a frankenstein experiment but now it's Ok simply because a doctor can do it. It is wrong and should be stopped. There are no longer any boundaries left in this wretched world. Boys becoming girls, bi-sexuals, gay marriage.. when will the madness stop. Actually longer than that. When a baby is born with both sexes (hermaphrodite] the parents and the doctors at times will determine which sex they will grow up as then. This has been going on as far back as the 60's.
Adult men and women have also been going thru sex change operations after they become adults and can make their own decisions.
I see nothing wrong with it. If a person's body doesn't match how their brain is wired, then things like a sex-change operation can fix them imo.
It doesn't affect my life whatsoever, but the bigots of America think they can tell everyone on how they are suppose to live and think.

You're right, switch. I don't do housework. We have a service that comes in and does it because neither one of us has the time. But I do cook because I enjoy it. Especially on the weekends when we entertain.
As far as an equal partnership goes... You should try it. Where is it written that a man should do everything? I really enjoy working and being a productive member of society and I have a talent that I actually get paid for using. Who can beat that? I'd be miserable sitting at home relying on a man for everything and I would never want my husband to have work a day longer than he has to so both of can be financially secure when we're older. This way, with both of us contributing equally, we build up that much more in less time and get to spend more quality time with each other. Granted, our house isn't paid for yet because we've put two kids through college but it will be in about 6 more years and that's ok with me. Sure, we have our moments, but generally speaking we're pretty happy, I guess.
