The shooting of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman has ignited a national conversation about prejudice, justice and the treatment of young African-American men. NBC News anchors, correspondents and contributors discuss the feelings that Martin's death sparked and relate their experiences covering the story.

First of all, congratulations to NBC for this- we really need to see more shows that talk openly about race, and not just during Black History Month.
I'd like to address the many readers that claim that this is not a race issue, but class issue. They then cite examples where they claim to feel the same anxiousness that African-americans feel when approached by police, or they claim that they've been victims of prejudice at the hands of black people, so...
The important thing to remember is that in the case of Trayvon Martin and in so many other stories that remain largely unreported to the masses, these young UNARMED men were killed. In a vacuum, completely ignorant of the recent history, let alone the not so recent history, of unarmed Afircan-american males being shot and killed or beaten to the edge of their lives, it's very easy to say, "Look at the specifics - Trayvon's case is not about race. Stop playing the race card." Unfortunately, the race card has been played against African-american men far too often.
late 1800's police brutality skyrockets .Drunk white people being beaten to death by police .
early 1900's still a problem.
by the 1920 the government gets fed up with it ,bye, bye smashing ever bottle of boss in the U.S.A.
BY 1925 every cop in the country is under mop control.
by the 1960-1970 so many young girls paying there crime with sex ,bad, bad, bad policemen.
1970's getting even worse !
all i forgot 1950's white teen's with there cig's rolled up in there shoulder . These guy got beat the hell out of by the newly formed and more powerful policeman . and there still raping the little girls.
my points is THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR A LONG TIME . SO PLEASE DON'T THINK YOU ARE BEING PULLED OVER BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN.
I have never been more proud than I was to see this story on MSNBC. There are times that blacks of today have ignored racism so much that when the incident like Rayvon Martin occurs our kids don't know how to handle it. Racism is like the elephant in the room that no one including blacks wants to talk about because we want to believe that we have most past that. But not talking about it insures that it will continue to flourish on booth sides. This video is a teachable moment that everyone could learn from because the reality is that it does exist.
Everyone will not view the Travon shooting incident the same way. African American's have a lot of freedom, but as a people and a country, we are far from total equality. Now if you have an issue with this fact, then, maybe you have not been around long. Also, you are like an ostrich, with your head in the sand. If Travon was a white youth, do you think that Mr. Zimmerman would have continued to follow him?
I recorded this show and just finished watching it. I'm not sure how to say this but the thought I had numerous times as I watched this segment was "I've been told that as well and I'm not black." (I'm white, married, in my 40s) I keep my hands on the steering wheel on the rare times I've been pulled over. I was taught to say "Sir" to people in authority and to show them proper respect for their position regardless of how I feel about them. I keep my hands out of my pockets, and purse, when I'm shopping and feel strange when leaving a store w/o making a purchase. Security has followed me through the store on past occasions. Do I think because I'm white I'm singled out? No, I don't. Maybe we need to look at the good in all people and not dwell so much on the negative. I think it is a fine line between being too proud and too humble that we all walk in order to be accepted.
Does airing this type of segment help or hurt our society?
My heart and prayers go out to Trayvon's parents.
Congratulations to Rock Center for exposing the public to the emotional feelings of NBC hosts regarding Trayvon Martin's death and the outrageous way certain folks are still mistreated in our country. It was a brilliant way to relate the reasons why this incident has so many decent folks so upset about the seemingly endless discrimination and racial profiling that still exists in our so-called compassionate society.
The Trayvon Martin killing is appalling. I cannot begin to fathom what it must have been like for a teen to feel that he was being followed and had to protect himself. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be on neighborhood watch and feel that you have discovered the person who was victimizing the neighborhood. But most of all, I cannot imagine what it must be like to lose a son.
I am frustrated at the rallying cry of social injustice and racism when it is clearly imperative to review the law and make immediate major modifications. Florida's Stand Your Ground law that allows justifiable use of force needs to be amended. When Zimmerman called 911 and was told 'not to follow,' all bets should have been off. At that point he was not acting as a protector but rather as an aggressor. Instead of making this a racist issue, how come this is not a legal issue? This law needs serious modifications.
To call this segment on Rock Center a teaching moment is a farce. I respect those interviewed but the lesson that came from this was to remember the 60's and validate the hysteria that is sweeping the nation.
I am curious, of all the NBC friends who were on this segment, how many spoke out about the hazing death of Robert Champion? Did NBC provide any insights into the college hazing? Is the hazing of black students worse than the hazing of non-black? With students using cell phones to record all sorts of moments, surely someone must have a video of this incident. Did any one try to help Champion? Offer him assistance? As disgusting as the Martin case is, I cannot begin to understand what it must have been like to beaten to death by friends and classmates...or what it was like to stand by silently. Wasn't this as barbaric as stoning? How come Al Sharpton did not surface with this tragedy? How come Obama did not express compassion to the Champion family? How come Obama did not state, "If I had a son he would look like Robert Champion"?
Any punk rock or heavy metal white boy from the 80's could sit in this interview and argue that this topic is bull on all levels . The number of time our white buddy's got the crap beat out of them by police for not doing what they say. The police have been abusive for 100 + years and it will never change. I for one don't think it should change ,because watching my friends get tossed around and beat-up by police is what made me a better person. The only thing that has changed is there is a camera watching everything we do today even the police.
I found the piece to be a bit disturbing. I live in the south and for all the "racism" everyone says is present in the south, I have never treated anyone the way these people described being treated. I have never seen anyone treated this way. I know racism exists. If a "thug" looking black person, white person, or hispanic person enters a store, restaurant, or any establishment they are viewed differntly than other customers. If you are going to "encourage" public opinion on a situation, is it not fair to present both sides? I know the young man was unarmed. That does not mean he did not attack Zimmerman as he has claimed. I was not there, so I do not know. What I do know is that some of the things that were said by the contributors to this piece are hard for me to believe. Anyone as successful and well represented as the individuals who interviewed, would not be viewed as a "threat" or as less than the rest of us by ANYONE I know. So one of two things is happening here: they were raised to believe white people look down on them and it is ingrained in their psyche without justification in reality, or they live in an area of our country with which I am very unfamiliar.
Now if a young black man (or white man, or hispanic man) walks in a store at the mall and presents themselves as a "thug" with their dress, actions, or speech, they will be viewed with suspicion. That is a natural human reaction, not racism.
The real racism in this case is becoming judge, jury, and executioner of this case without all the facts coming out. I have seen just as many blacks (if not more) that are racist as I have whites. This is a two-way street that is only addressed in one direction. Jessie Jacksona and Al Sharpton are more racist than any white person alive. The head of the KKK is not as racist as these two are. They prey on their own race for profit. They incite violence and unrest at every turn.
So, if we are going to discuss racism, let us look at both sides of the street. I assure you it is not a one way street.
Just a comment regarding the 911 call Zimmerman made. A 911 dispatcher is just that, a dispatcher. They can tell you to stand on your head and hold your breath, but they ARE NOT the police ordering you to stand down. So, right or wrong Zimmerman still did not violate the law by continuing to follow Martin. The 911 dispatcher telling him he did not need to continue following Martin does not change the law. The 911 dispatcher did not say "stop following the man". The dispatcher told Zimmerman it was not necessary when he asked if he needed to. Zimmerman ASKED. The dispatcher said it was not necessary. So, first of all the distpatcher did not say "don't follow him" the dispatcher answered Zimmerman's question with a suggestion that following the man (which turned out to be a 17 year old minor) was not necessary. Getting all the facts before making a judgement is very useful.
I was not there, so I can't say for sure, but if Zimmerman is actually telling the truth, he violated no law in Florida (or Alabama, or Georgia, or Texas, or Mississippi, or Tennessee, or Arkansas, or Kentucky, or any number of other states).
So why is it that when a Hispanic man shoots a 17 year old black man, it becomes a "black and white" race issue and is called a "hate crime, but when 5 black kids kidnap two white teens and torture them and kill them it is not a hate crime? Any cold-blooded act from one human being to another is hate. Race does not matter. This is simply not a race issue. This is a legal issue. Either Zimmerman is lying and killed the kid without provocation, or he was attacked and killed the kid after being attacked.
Rock Center know lets get 5 red-neck white boys and interview them about how bad the police beat them up. I could not imagine what those five high profile people they interviewed say to there children about racism . I am positive it is something like" there all against you ,don't trust them ,and its all because you are black. This in no way amps up a good future for race relations. I am finished with this topic now ,but I wish it could go viral on the web.
This story is personal to me because I’m also like her. As a hijabi, I feel like a victim as well. I've seen people act differently seeing me in hijab from applying to jobs to entering grocery stores. I myself forget that there is something that is covering my head. Yes, I am confused as well, i am upset, I am angry the same way i feel about Trayvon's case. But what strikes me the most is the ignorance of the media; the lack of attention that Shaima Alawadi and her family is receiving is unfair. If Trayvon's case is labeled as a hate crime, then Shaima case is a hate crime as well. You ask why? Well, haven't you read or even heard about the note that was left near the dead body of Shaima? And yes, Samia’s family wants to know who did it as well! Once again her name Shaima Alawadi, and she’s not receiving the media attention that she deserves!
If you woud lke to see integration at its finest, visit our dialysis unit. There are male, female, black and white nurses. There are black, white, male, female and native american dialysis techs. The majority of patients are black due to high incidence of hypertension, but there are also hispanic and white patients. It is really one big friendly family.
So....where are all of the comments in support of this drivel now that you've discovered that the whole 'racism' angle of the story was concocted by NBC? A network who has no problem ruining or nearly ruining the life of George Zimmerman; only time will tell the quality of Mr. Zimmerman's future. But!! They draw the line at releasing the name of their producer lest they ruin his life!! Any brand of NBC News has been banned in my home. My rage is white hot!! You should be ashamed of yourselves!! You have ZERO credibility!!!!!

We have been tag as Targeted Individuals ( TI ) there about 3.4 millions of in US along is going thru this harassment and it getting worst. they convince the pastor my church that I am a thief or petadafile. These people are well organized and you will see in watching these videos from YouTube. I have daily records dating back almost ten years of my activities . These people have planted bugging devices in my house and car tracking devices and on the phone systems. They are so many violation of the law they have broke. (when they convince the police and the neighbor watch committee and do verify the source of info, that is wrong). I do not speak on the phone and I watch who is around me in public. Like when I in the store the other day, people was me from the walking trail in a white dodge pickup a man and woman.
