Anthony Pylant, an idled auto worker from Tennessee, was relieved and excited when he got a letter that a General Motors assembly plant in Flint, Mich., was adding a third shift.
“You don’t know what you got until it’s gone and man, we didn’t realize what we had, you know, until we lost it,” Pylant said.
In 2009, the Spring Hill, Tenn., GM plant where Pylant worked shut down. Pylant searched for work for two years, but nothing he found matched the money or benefits he had before he was laid off.
“It’s sort of a pride thing,” Pylant said. “It really hurt, so when this came up. It was like, I got to do what I know how to do, you know.”
In November of last year, Pylant and two of his co-workers from the Tennessee plant moved into a sparse apartment in Flint, Mich.
“After a lot of crying and tears and packing up, here all three of us are in Michigan,” Pylant said.
Pylant and his roommates, Dave Gray and Marcus Tyler, pack their lunches and travel to their 11 p.m. shift together five nights a week. They work on the assembly line until 7 a.m.
“You got to be a vampire, sleep during the day while everybody else is living their life,” Pylant said.
The third shift in Flint is one of five places where General Motors has added a graveyard shift since it received a $50 billion bailout from the government in 2009.
Nationwide, other automakers have added third shifts as well. In Belvidere, Ill., Chrysler recently announced plans to add a third shift by the summer. Ford recently added a third shift to a plant in Chicago.
“We have studied third shifts and we’re very careful about when we put them on. The last thing we want to do is put on a third shift, bring people in from around the country, disrupt their lives, bring them here and then something happens,” said Larry Zahner, manufacturing manager for General Motors North America. “So we’ve been very careful assuring when we put the third shift on, it’s going to stick.”
Two years ago, GM shut down the third shift at the Flint assembly plant after the automaker was forced to file for bankruptcy and ask the government for help. GM pared down pension packages, got rid of thousands of jobs, hundreds of dealerships and watched their stock price tumble.
Now the automaker that some nicknamed ‘Government Motors’ in the wake of the economic collapse appears to be turning a corner. It is now the number one automaker in the world, a title it regained in part to Toyota’s struggles after the devastating tsunami. The company is expected to announce its 2011 net income Thursday and some have predicted it will be a record high for the company.
“While what’s good for General Motors is good for the U.S. may not be the slogan of the day, when we create a job, we still help the economy and we create more jobs outside,” Zahner said.
The addition of the third shift in Flint has added 750 jobs at the plant. Most of the jobs have gone to long laid-off auto workers. The jobs pay around $29 an hour with benefits.
Union local head Barry Campbell and plant chief Amy Farmer said that since the bailout, there’s been a shift in how labor and management relations interact with one another.
“We strategize together, we plan projects together, we execute together,” Farmer said.
Both Farmer and Campbell were born and raised in Flint. They say that the third shift makes them hopeful about Flint’s future.
“We’re always looking for available floor space. I want to fill every inch. I want all the jobs. I want to continue to build trucks. I want our kids hopefully down the road to have jobs too, right here in Flint,” Campbell said.
Flint, nicknamed ‘Vehicle City,’ has long been emblematic of the rise and fall of the auto industry. It has shrunk to almost half the city it once was. In its heyday, there were 80,000 auto related jobs, now there are only 7,000 auto related jobs. The iconic plant, founded in 1947, once rolled vehicles like the Corvette and Bel Air off its line. Now, it churns out 684 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks each day. Experts say that the increasing demand for the heavy duty truck, named truck of the year by Motor Trend in 2011, is a positive economic sign.
“I think the Flint assembly plant and the heavy duty trucks here are a real economic indicator of where we’re going. People are going back to work. Companies are starting to buy pickup trucks for their businesses. This is all great news,” said Joanne Muller, the Detroit bureau chief for Forbes Media who has covered the auto industry for 20 years.
Muller said that the jobs gain at the assembly plant is rippling through the community.
“They say for every auto assembly job, there are 10 jobs that are added, whether it’s through suppliers, hairdressers, bars,” Muller said. “It rolls through a community and you can really see it with the ups and downs of Michigan, you know? When the auto industry is doing well, Michigan is doing well. When it’s not, nobody is doing well.”
Three miles from the GM plant, Oakley Industries has added 12 full time jobs at their sub assembly plant. Workers there assemble tires that are then used at the GM plant. A parts supplier, LSI, also added 60 new jobs.
On a visit by NBC News to Angelo’s Coney Island, a 63-year-old restaurant in Flint, owner Neil Helmkay said that the increase in plant workers means that he’ll likely add a few more waitresses.
“I’ve probably increased business anywhere from 5 percent to 8 percent and as GM gets more jobs in the area, of course we’re going to grow along with everybody else,” Helmkay said.
Forbes bureau chief Muller described the auto industry as ‘woven into the fabric of Flint’ and said that GM’s decision to add a third shift in Flint was as much a political decision as a business one.
“GM made the decision to invest here because it was politically the right thing to do. They owed it to their workers. They owed it to their heritage. They owed it to the government,” Muller said. “Even though it’s smaller, their presence here is smaller than it used to be, I think there’s a connection and there always will be.”
For Pylant, the once idled GM worker who has returned to the assembly line, the job is precious.
“You know, I didn’t go to college, but I’m making a good salary. It’s the last stand of the middle class family,” Pylant said. “There’s a million people across this nation who would swap spots with us in a heartbeat, so I don’t take it for granted at all.”
Editor's Note: Correspondent Mike Taibbi will appear live on NBC's Rock Center with Brian Williams to discuss the impact of his report, 'The Graveyard Shift,' on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 9pm/8c.

This is fantastic news!!!
My heritage lays in this auto industry and the plants/factories that are scattered across southeast Michigan. My grandfathers worked in them, my father became a manager and executive of them, and my sister recently got married in one of them. (I'm not making that up).
Flint has, by far, been hit the hardest, and if any place needed a shot in the arm, it was them. I don't give a crap what people say, thank you for this Mr. President. In some ways, you've saved my way of life.
It's great news for America!
Not so much for Mitt Romney, though.
I have to say, that made me laugh - the mental image is pretty hilarious :) Thanks!
Also, I happen to agree with you 100%.
Too bad all of the former shareholders of GM got screwed and the companies owed money by GM got screwed when we taxpayers bailed GM out. I knew there was a reason my entire family has always owned only FORD vehicles.(Ford did not need my tax money by the way)
Digital,
It was sooo cool. It was at the Piquette Plant, which was where they built the original Model T's, and it had all the original machinary and all the cool, classic, cars lined up, with the whole history of the auto industry laid out.
Of course cool is relative. I am a nerd, but anyway...
If you ever get a chance I highly suggest you check it out.
And yes, Commonsense, Romney can suck our American auto industry balls. Ball bearings of course.
jak - be that as it may, Ford isn't #1 in sales - GM is.
Must be a reason for that - personally, I prefer Fix Or Repair Daily - but then there's always F--ked Over Rebuilt Dodge.
Sarah - I would love to! Unfortunately I have this allergy to traveling any farther north than Missouri, despite having been born in Chicago :)
Well, that may be a good thing. We do eat southern folks for breakfast in Detroit. We're so badas*$* even our mayor went to prison.
But, PSHAW, why focus on the negative when we have good news for the first time in a very long time!!!
digital noise- My brother is still driving his 1976 F-100 that he bought new & I'm still driving my 1996 F-150 that I bought new and it has 306,000 miles on it and only gets regular maintainence, tires, brakes oil change etc. How many GM vehicles have you had to replace in that time span?
Yay! And it only cost the taxpayers a mere $14 billion! It sure would be nice if the government redistributed other people's money in my line of work too. Oh wait, I'm not in a politically connected union.
It's my understanding that auto sales from factory to dealer are up but not so for dealer to consumer. All that means is dealer inventory is up. By the way. I was born in Flint. Guess what happens when companies shut down? You move to where the work is.
The public isn't buying the Socialist Government Motors cars, they are forcing the dealers to buy them to keep the unions working. AT TAYPAYER EXPENSE
Dunkin - GM and Chrysler paid back their loans. Nice try making good news bad, though. We all know how much Republicans hate good news when it comes to our recovering economy. Oh, well.
If that what it took for the Government to save American auto industry, then my "taxpayers" money WELL SPENT. I know that my husbands little company wouldn't survive if GM would sunk. And God know how many other company's would go under the water.
President received alot of crap from Republicans, but he did what any other precedent would do (including Republican ones).
@jimsepa
Wrong, Obama's auto czar said that taxpayers will never see $14 billion repaid. Do some research before making ignorant statements.
You people with your manufactured boogiemen and overly simplistic views on things...
Look, the UAW had issues. They also gave concessions. But you wanna know what else, the executives had issues, the products had issues, the lenders had issues...
The whole gosh darn system had issues. And the whole gosh darn system had to learn to compromise When you place it totally on the back of one entity, when in reality it is a clusterfu(#*$, you make yourself look ignorant.
This isn't that black and white, folks. The world isn't that black and white. I'm sorry if that scares you, or messes with your head, but you and what you believe doesn't necessarily equal the "good guy". Nor do I or what I believe...
Get over yourselves. They've been bombing sh*% on my tax dime for a decade, I don't agree with that. But I live in a society and a world that's pay to play. We all pay, and we all pay for crap we might not necessarily agree with, but we all get stuff we want in return for that.
Knock the whining off, pay your taxes, and deal with it.
Svenolafson
The numbers reported every month are the number of cars sold, if you can, read the report and it will tell you what dealer inventory stands at, and show that you are wrong. BTW they are not sold to the dealer, that is why when you buy a car it is called new. Look at the title, it says who it was sold by.
Dunkin. Do me a favor, google "Chrysler paid back auto loan" and "GM paid back auto loan" then come back with your intellectual comebacks, K? Until then, go have another drink.
Google this: "Ex-auto czar: Auto bailout will cost taxpayers $14 billion"
Might want to stop now before you make any more foolish remarks.
Socialist government cars are everywhere, not only in Flint. The difference is the good jobs with benefits are in Flint and other union jobs. Georgia, Alabama and other states have their socialist government cars too. Ever see a car dealer move into a state without huge tax subsidies?
What is wrong with a middle class? You really want all Americans that work to have limited income, no benefits or health insurance. That to me is the most direct route to Socialism, people are going to get those things by working for them or getting the government to give it to them.
Yeah. It would have been ever so much better ofGM had been allowed to go down, along with their suppliers. And then Chrysler and Ford would have followed shortly thereafter.
And even better, then we'd have even more people unemployed, on welfare and Medicaid. And you'd be complaining about that.
Dunkin, Thanks for repeating yourself; I read your first post and disagreed with it. I read your second post that provided no new information, and, guess what? I still disagree with it.
I see, so when faced with evidence proving you wrong you choose to stick your head in the sand. Typical.
@Svered Head in a Jar Ford never took a bailout, it would have gotten by just fine. In fact, it might have even become a better company if it were allowed to compete against GM and Chrysler without taxdollar handouts getting in the way.
Sometimes its fun to debate on line; other times it just makes my head hurt.
people working means people spending money, people spending money means increase in demand for product and services, increase in demands for products and services means other businesses will hire, more businesses hiring means more increased demand for goods and services, more increased demands in good services means MUCH MUCH MUCH more increases in tax revenues.
If you push the money down low to the working classes it travels all the way up through the economy where banking, manufacturing, and raw materials reside, meaning those at the top will benefit exponetially
Get rid of the Bush tax cuts, and oil subsidies, close loopholes, increase capital gains tax to regular income rates for those making over $250K a year, use the increased revenues to fund some massive much needed infrastructure projects and this entire nation top to bottom will benefit, and the increased tax revenues will pay off our bills quicker then any Austerity measures being forced on us by the far right wing>
this is common sense stuff
@dongwork4yuda
Theres a problem with that theory. An economy will not survive in the long run if it is being proped up with borrowed money and fiat currency. But lets raise taxes on job creators at a time when we need jobs the most. That sounds like a great idea.
If GM is doing so well now, why are Dem's so fired up to raise taxes? The Government shouldn't be allowed to own businesses, it's not their job, but since they decided to do it,the profits should benefit all taxpayers, not just the union ones.
Fiat currency? Dunkin? You're a Gold Standard Tin Hatter?!?
Dunkin,
Worried about 14 billion to help Americans? How do you feel about the trillions spent in Iraq? Did you support all the Bush incursions into foreign countries?
BTW.......Ford wouldn't survive if the suppliers to all 3 american manufactures had to close due to the loss of GM and Chrysler
@Ebeneezer Goode
Oh no, I want our government to endlessly print bills until the currency is worth less than the paper itself. After all, if the government can't convince Americans to allow tax raises, let's go behind their backs and devalue the dollar by printing more instead.
@marklepew
Nope, I'm just as opposed to the Bush's war in Iraq as I am with Obama's war in Libya and the upcoming one with Iran.
And now that you mention suppliers, many auto supplier workers lost their benefits and pensions because the bailouts favored the auto worker unions. They got a pretty raw deal.
DUHkin
BS.. on what you just posted. Propped up yes, paid back, mostly, and with the dividend of increased tax revenues, increases in demand for goods and services, increased tax revenues.
Tax breaks for corps and wealthy have never ever been lower, they are not creating many jobs with that money, but CEO pay and profits are at all time highs.
Also infrastructure is what all corps and the wealthy depend upon to build and maintain their wealth, without reliable up to date infrastructure the entire nation crumbles and the wealth leaves for a functioning nation when the infrastructure crumbles beyond repair or use.
If infrastructure is needed to build and maintain wealth then it stands to reason the wealth should pay a more to ensure the means by which all wealth is built is maintained and improved.
if those at the top sacrifice those tax rates and the money is pushed down low to the workers all those at the top will seen better returns for the price of a short term cost. Once we create massive infrastructure jobs many people will be spending and all that spending will make it all the way to the top...
Seriously think about this reality, and stop thinking taxes bad.... removing these tax breaks would actually be better for those at the top in the not so long haul
Well I think this is good news. Despite the people on here who like to piss in the cheereos.
These people who say that the cars are the result of socialism forced on the people of the US don't know the difference between socialism and captialism. If these cars were distributed on a socialist system then how are they sold on a capitalist market that is based on supply and demand? They also aren't aware of the fact that our country is largely capitalist with a socialist safety net. Has been all our lives. Without that safety net this country would go the way of Rapture in the game Bioshock. Our society would eat itself. Ayan Rand and her amoral philosophy be damned.
Lol "the world is not black and white". Can you tell me what the smallest sub atomic particle is? Could it be an electron or positron or their anti counterparts, and there is a zero spin state too (has to be since there are +1 and -1 spin particles).
So there are at least 5 basic building blocks of the universe, maybe you should rethink you "black and white" statement. I am taking to you in a world of only 2 possible states right now and unless you understand how to make 3d worlds from only 2 possible states then I would be quiet. Sounds like you are another person that managed to make a ton of money without knowing your a$$ from a hole in the ground. Do us all a favor and go back to school with all your money, learn math and physics then you might understand.
Our universe is a CLOSED ABSOLUTE system, just like our economy. The total amount of energy in the universe has not changed since its birth. Each government prints a finite amount of currency, there is a finite amount of material of the planet Earth. The relationship between the quantities of each sets the "value" of something.
Get your head out of your a$$ and realize that something cannot come from nothing. For you to make tons and tons of money, that money had to come from somewhere. You cannot earn or keep that much of a percentage or ratio. I do not care how you got it, YOU CANNOT KEEP IT.
Stop your whining, pay your employees a fair wage, pay your taxes, and deal with it you spoiled rich kids. Look at all the games the rich have done of the past couple years just to try to keep what they think they "earned". /Cry you have to give up that extra money you cannot even spend because you have so much... Yet you have to rely on government bailouts when you fail to run a company instead of dying like you want everyone else to if they fail, and did not make the right decisions in life.
Maybe if you did not try to cheat the math, 2 + 2 = 4 and does not 5 no matter how many people you can lie to and convince otherwise (bubble economics). Maybe if you understood how the universe works and ITS LAWS, and that we MUST follow these rules no matter what.
It really makes me laugh when I hear people talk and complain about following "God's rules", that believing in and following rules are stupid. Are we not forced to follow the laws of the universe, since this is the only place we know we can exist? Did humanity create or design the universe, or was it here before us? Can you design a 100% efficient device, engine, or system? I wonder what humanity is trying to duplicate...
The word "socialism" is a boogeyman word handed to Fox News fanatics like red meat given to a pack of wolves. (It gets them all riled up and snapping.) The vast majority of the people throwing the term around have almost no idea what it means. And when they do, the light bulb comes on and they recognize that we've been living in the midst of "socialism" for DECADES. Two of our BIGGEST "socialism" programs are Medicare (which allows medical care for fixed-income Seniors who otherwise could not afford it,) AND the free health care provided to our veterans at VA hospitals, clinics, etc.
You mean the middle class that is created by auto industry jobs? Also a socialist system, like Switzerland strives for good income, good benefits, and health insurance. Even assuming you're right and that socialism is the proverbial baby-eating bishop of Bath and Wells, you're still arguing against auto industry jobs which, A) give people a decent living wage that allows them to be a part of the middle class in America (which is something you want) B) gives workers (note I said workers, people who provide valuable labor to provide a product or service in return for a living wage, and not lazy poor people milking our social security system for all they can get out of it, which you are probably against) good health insurance and other benefits.
You mean job creators like the auto industry? Whom you are pitching a fit about because they got government money (which they paid back) and are using their profits to create new jobs that will allow their employees to live a middle class life style. You do want people to work for a living, yes? You do want them to earn enough money to raise a family and live a middle class standard of living in return for their work, yes? You want people to hold jobs that give them retirement benefits and health insurance in return for their labor, yes? That is what GM is doing right now. Given these positive results I really don't see what you are complaining about. Unless of course you don't want people to have jobs that pay them decent living wages that they can support their families with as well as health insurance and a retirement plan.
$14b lost? So what. The gov't has made more than that in taxes paid by the workers saved.
I guess a bailout that would eventually put tons of money back into the economy, take people off of unemployment, and off the streets, and PAY TAXES for many years to come, wasn't worth the money we put into it. Ever hear of "investment in the future", Jak? Keep telling yourself that it was a bad thing when the auto industry keeps producing AMERICAN JOBS and aid in trying to revive the middle class.
DunkinH,
And did you know that the President recently gave an interview saying that he would bail out the auto industry AGAIN... if he had to do it all over? Can you believe that?
These damn liberals and their constant bail-outs with our money.... Wait, what? Ohhhhhhh, former President George Bush gave that interview. Wait a minute... are you telling me that a REPUBLICAN bailed them out?
Well how are we going to blame the liberals for that? Oh, I know... I just need to think like a Fox News anchor.
Let's see.... ummmmm.... Obama made him do it. Ya, ya... that's it. Obama forced George Bush to bail out the auto industry because... ummmm... he's an alien! Ya... an alien from another planet with special powers that control your mind. See... I knew we could figure out a way to blame him. So it was really the evil alien liberals controlling a Republican, and making him bail out these companies.
Wow, that's actually pretty good. I bet I can take over Glen Beck's job... I just need to think of the most ridiculous, stupid, illogical, out-of-this world conspiracy theory... and Republicans will buy into it. Look out, Beck and Hannity... you've got some competition.
Gm should have been allowed to fail and start over. What the govt did was nothing less then stave off the inevitable for awhile. The unions will slowly creep back to their untenable status and the whole thing will happen again. GM put itself in this position and Ford did not - look at what happened. Too big to fail is crap - people need to realize that the fall is coming and when it does it will hurt.
Folks, this is what doing thing for the common good is all about. Helping each other. Now more people have a job so they can contribute to the common good to. Go America GO.
Aren't you glad that President Obama and the Democrats rescued the auto industry instead of letting it go bankrupt as the Repugs wanted? This is awesome news! THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT AND DEMOCRATS!!!!
@ManFromNantucket - Be careful there, people 'round here don't take to kindly to folks speaking the truth! There is a fundamental difference between the two main secs of America (Democrat vs. Repug). Some people believe in America and helping their fellow Americans when they are done, and some believe in, "sh*t I'm doing okay, so F you!". I don't think I need to clarify which is for which. Yes, helping the needy will always result in some people taking advantage of, but we cannot let those who really need help go by the wayside because were a worried about some freeloaders. Freeloaders will always exist in any system. It is something you must accept.
P.S. - Obama is going to be winning this election easily! "If ya don't know, now ya know!"
1.4 million American workers that can be thank full to the Obama Administration, the Democratic Congress and the Democratic senate. Once again the Democracts have peoven to be heads up with the American workers and the American people in general.
The Republicans would have you believe that it would have been better to see America fail than to see the rewards of a economic come back.
It is now that you are starting to see who has your back and they aren't red and the dont look like elephants.
Mistakes yes, Democrats have made mistakes but they have never abandoned the poor and the working man
@ IndieParty - While I agree with the message of what you are trying to get across. You are actually wrong. Bush & Paulson did enact the TARP funds, however, they did so haphazardly basically just throwing money out there with no control over what it was going to. That was in part because for a moment it looked like the entire world economic system was about to crash and burn, making us wish we would have lived during the Great Depression, and partly because Bush was... well not so bright (just how Republicans like their candidates I might add).
No, all the credit for the auto bailout should, and will, be put on Obama. Which I fully welcome, because unlike the Republican dingbats on this thread, the majority of Americans reading this article think this story is a good thing, and this will show come election time. Another 4 years of Obama, tea partiers go chew some lead!
@UAW-779887 - The biggest mistake Obama made so far is trying to work with Republicans. He promised he would try to be bi-partisan and he tried, but he kept trying for too long. He should have just started shoving Democratic policies through when he had the full force of Congress. Of course, those handful of Blue Dog (or dumb @ss as I like to call them) Democrats decided they were going to act like Replublicans for two years and screwed the public from getting Public Option in healthcare and held back much more legislation because Democrats needed every single vote, because Republicans refused to vote for anything, even things they tried to do a few years before.
Alot of lessons have been learned by the Democrats and the people of this great country about the republicans.
I and my family (extended were all die hard Republicans in the old party the new Republican party sucks we have all changed to Democrat as we all believe in the old Republican philosyphy to help everyone is gone and now their philosophy is help yourself.Look forward to the elections
DunkinH.....
Did you know that most Americans are employed by companies with FOUR or less employees? Do you realize that small business owners with 4 or less employees are rarely WEALTHY ? Can you understand that means that most job creation in this country is by folks who are NOT wealthy ?
BTW---If many or most companies in the auto supply chain had failed on account of GM and Chrysler (being allowed to fail), FORD would not have been able to continue building cars. Therefore, it too would have failed or been severely damaged. Bush/Cheney began the rescue of GM and Chrysler. It was the right thing to do and that is why President Obama continued that policy to its successful conclusion.
Fortunately, for us all, the White House is not occupied by someone who "thinks" as you.
Only a republican can look at good news and turn it into something so negative so quick. Where does the negative stop. Poor people - you hate them. Middle class - you hate them. Lawyers and Judges - you hate them. Workers - You hate them. Immigrants - you hate them. Green Industries - you hate them. The United States Government - you hate them. Gun control advocates - you hate them. Any one that needs help from the government - You hate them.
I on the otherhand, like to look at the new jobs created as a promotion of the american worker and America as a whole. I like to think a working american is a happy american and consumer who will support our economy as a whole. I like to see the glass as half full. Hope is what we need - not hate.
I am waiting for just one Teapublican to give Our President any Congratulation s on saving the AMERICAN auto industry it has been a long time since we have seen the turn around and still the GOPers havent gave him any props. That my friends say what the GOPhers stand for, Damn the American people, politics over the American way of life and freedom, I will never again vote for any Republican, I will vote for Conservative Democrats
Good news for the unemployed, good news for the auto industry, and good news for the nation. It's a nice small step to recovery. As for the money used in the bail out, if we get it back that's a bonus, even if it's only half. We p!ssed more $$ than that rebuilding Iraq. We p!ssed more $$ than that to foriegn aide to Isreal every year. We p!ssed more $$ than that to corporate welfare for every top 100 fortune 500 company, that outsource US jobs to third world country. So if that's the price we have to pay to get our economy back from the Bush Abyss then it is a small price indeed. Did you ever notice Bush Sr. tanked the economy after an Iraq war just like "W" did, "W" just bought it to a whole new level of incompentency.
Hey digital, don't forget First On Race Day and Garage Mechanic's Companion
Does the Teapublicans hate AMERICA so much that the would like to see Zero, Zilch, Nothing , Nada, Gone, the American Auto Industry, are they so in love with the $$$ that Toyota and other foreign Auto makers that they would sell out there own countrymen and women for a few $$$. I have seen the Congressional GOPhers lineup with other countrys against us, If we were at War with these nations These congress people would be tried for TREASON, alas all we can do is vote out everyone of those anti American Teapublican in office
What would be nice is the taxpayers money building affordable electric cars like we were promised.. With US made parts like we were promised.. But big oil stuck their greasy finger up big auto and big governments a$$ and the taxpayer got hosed..
Wonder if the pay and benefits at the new job is at the non market rate for the required skills? Obviously they are overpaid because he could not find any job with the same skills that came close to the pay and benefits.
Wonder if they still get that great pension that broke the back of the company in the first place requiring them to get the government bailout?
Maybe Congress should think about putting on additional shifts!
We all know how overworked and underpaid our lawmakers are.
Maybe they could initiate an on the job training program?
Better yet, maybe Mitt Romney and Bain Capital can utilize some of Bain's talent and restructure our entire government.
Oh, That's right, the 1% already have things designed the way they want.
It's really hard to stay a step ahead of those fellows, their money buys more than one could ever imagine.
I'm happy for Mr. Pylant and all the GM team. What I am struck by in this article is Mr. Larry Zahner, Manufacturing Manager, General Motors, North America. Larry, a voice from the past here. Always knew you had the makings. Now, if you're gonna become Chairman, and you very well may, don't accept the big picture until you're sure the details are correctly connected. You're a good man Larry Zahner! Reading about you is like hearing from you. Congratulations and be well! Abby happens to see this He'll go into a cussing fit! That fool finally became a General! I'm not lying!
Excuse me all. Mean no harm. Fact, I wrote this with tears in my eyes. Respectfully
Dunkin,
I googled your "ex-auto czar" on a whim.
Next time you google something, you might want to actually read the article, instead of only quoting the title. Otherwise you might end up just sounding silly. Oops, too late.
You are clearly a typical party rhetoric type. you ranting and screaming about the taxpayer will pay 14 billion in the bailout is nothing more than glen beck style, no actual basis in fact, fear mongering.
the part that you forgot to mention was, that number was a guess based on nothing more than opinion and speculation. There was no fact involved.
The taxpayer would have lost 14billion if the government did what republicans wanted and sold the 25%stake in GM and Chrysler at the time of that estimate, based on the price of those shares at that time.
Those stock prices have risen considerably since then, and if they continue to rise, then the government stands to create a (gasp) profit.
The Republicans have been frothing at the mouth to get the President to sell those shares immediately, spouting that the government should not own stake in a privately owned company, but the real reason is they NEED the taxpayers to lose that 14 billion to make the Dems look bad.
Republicans will stop at nothing to make the dems look bad, up to and including intentionally derailing any plan to get the economy back on track.
More hype for Obama's reelection campaign by NBC, Obama's media outlet.
No surprise there.
roy wilson true american. you can tell he is so happy American manufacturing is back on track. What happened Roy....no more cut and paste posts than put everyone in a coma. Parroting the talking points is getting tiresome huh roy?
Roy, I want to be sure of what you are saying. GM, Chrysler and Ford have ALL begun running third shifts and re-hiring laid off workers so that President Obama can get re-elected. All three of these corporations have reported making a profit, but that is really a lie just to help influence an election. Does that summarize your post? Have you taken your medication yet?
Aren't you glad more Americans are going back to work and paying taxes? No, of course not because that would have political ramifications that you dislike. Could you just leave the US now?
Finally, this depression is turning around. One job at a time.....
In spite of the GOP obstructionism and misguided efforts to starve the recovery.
Yeah, turning around for Obama's buddies in the unions thanks to taxpayer's dollars. What about the rest of us?
Dunkin, what was the alternative? Allow another 500,000 people to go onto unemployment?
I would agree that under other circumstances (i.e., not the worst recession we've seen in almost 100 years, along with a credit and real estate crisis), it should have been allowed to go under. But the situation over the last 4 years is exceptional, and exceptional situations require exceptional action.
commonsense,
Just because someone has a different idea on how to fix the economy, doesn't mean they have evil intent. I think differing ideas are great - and we need to get back to honest debates in this country - and stop throwing around party sound bites.
DunkinH
Who do you think is buying all the cars?
Obviously not DunkinH. He may be unemployable, of course. Uneducable.
@DunkinH
Tell me again how much better it would be for you if another 500,000 people were unemployed.
Pssst; everyone, keep this quiet. Don't let the Repub/TP find out. They are still bashing PRESIDENT Obama at every turn.
I'm much better than 4 years ago; the money I lost on my investments is back (the second time I lost a bundle under Dubya!), the market is getting better, unemployment is down, jobs are up, people's outlook is getting better. The whole country is slowly improving.
The Repub/TP will NEVER acknowledge any Obama/USA success; just bash. Give it a rest.
Peace.
DunkinH
solution, put an application into a auto company.
The auto industry employs millions directly and indirectly, and if we owuld of let them fail this nation would be in much much worse shape..
Nobody is stopping you from applying for a job there. You can apply at Boeing too, they are hiring thousands
Don't need a new car, I'm quite happy with my Audi. I also have a bachelor's degree and I'm better at my job than you could ever hope to be. Liberals cannot survive in the real world, that's why they rely on government handouts.
Full Disclosure: I sold my house about a year ago and moved to a place in the country (that was already paid for), made enough money to buy a new pickup (DODGE), paid cash, am retired, get SS and a pension. I'm in Hog Heaven, or at least doing well.
Anyone who is not a millionaire and votes Repub/TP is voting against their own interests. I voted for Gerry Ford, he was a decent guy, but wouldn't vote for any of the half-wits who have run in the last 20 years, or especially currently. Thanks Dubya, for the cluster-situation you left us in. The woman who lost her job in Canada was right: Moron.
PS duncanh, I've never seem a Repub/TP person turn down SS, Medicare, Unemployment, or any other program yet. I know some real Slather-A$$es who are on SSI and vote Repub/TP.
The only handout thie Democrat took was Unemployment in the early 80's, and went back to school under a CETA program. And worked ever since. Stick your comments about liberals and handouts somewhere
Hey DunkinH, are you too stupid to work a union job? Should people be poor just to impress cranky old men like you? I hope someone changes your diapers soon.
Dunkin is an appropriate name for this troll, he sounds like the obnoxious clown in a dunk tank on the boardwalk. Just sitting there yelling insults to anyone who walks by.
Nothing but a paid troll telling lies. If Obama puts people back to work, it is socialism, if not it is OMG look at the unemployment numbers.
NYT who is forcing dealers to "buy" cars? is that something you just made up?
I think Bill Gates is a liberal, and Warren Buffett............you have the chops to hang with them Dunkin?
You know you're winning the argument when liberals resort to petty namecalling. But yeah, I'm a really cranky old man at 25 years of age. ;)
@marklepew
Ah Warren Buffett, the hypocrite whose calling for tax raises while using accounting tricks to avoid paying taxes himself. Maybe Bill and Warren should put their money where their mouth is and take a nice chunk of change out of the Gates Foundation and donate it directly to the Treasury.
Dunkin...intelligent people do not speak in hyperbole such as declaring all liberals live off government handouts.
This liberal has two well paying jobs, bought a new house two years ago, new car this year, had pay raises and bonuses each year as well. Am I better off in the past three years than in the eight years preceding - hell yes.
You may think you impress people with claims to own an Audi and have a bachelors degree but in my professional, executive experience as a person who hires people to work for me - that doesn't mean anything to the character or the intelligence of an individual. How they treat others and form their opinions does and let me tell you - your rants here speak volumes about you.
Hey dunkinh I don't hear you complaining about the billions needed to rescue the banks . Our taxpayer money went to bail them out too . And it was a lot more . While the bankrupt bank execs were receiving million dollar taxpayer bonuses the auto companies lost their CEO's . Not a peep from you RWNJ about that . As usual ,ignore the facts that don't support your view . Your kind are starting to be outed ,finally the people are thinking for themselves . Not listening to bought and paid for politicians .
Dunkin, these auto workers who are on these "vampire" shifts are working for a living. They are trading hours of their lives to provide valuable labor to a company, in return for a decent living wage and benefits, so that said company can produce products to sell on a capitalist market. From reading your posts it seems that these are things that you want for American citizens, yes?
You want them to work for a living, prividing labor to a company that sells products on a captialist market, yes?
What, then, do you really have to hold against them? They have achieved what you want for them.
Dunkin,
I have a good job and live quite comfortably. I do not need help. If you need help ask for it. If you do not need help, rejoice like I am doing.
P.S. I am a liberal.
You guys need to lay off Dunkin.
He gave it all away when he said he's 25 years old. He hasn't even been around long enough to learn anything. Just another young spoiled little kid. Let him go through some rough times, maybe he will learn something.
Poor little Dunkin, I bet he's never had to worry about his next months rent, or food on the table. I'm also betting mommy and daddy have paid his way all thought his life.
Well said The Maitre. I would just like to add that this liberal also works a pretty decent job and attends school (already have my BS in Computer Science). I am better off now than I was two years ago. Paid cash for a fairly new vehicle and looking to buy a new home very soon. Now about that handout?
Dunkin, the GOP has tried their level best to throw a damper on good news and it hasnt worked. Stop watching Faux news and be happy that these folks are not living on unemployment or government assistance. I mean really isnt that what the GOP yells about?
Dunkin is cleaning his room right now and his mom won't let him blog until he is finished.
Wait a minute, I thought I was already labeled a cranky old man? You immature liberals need to get your story straight.
@dsb
Its hilarious especially when you consider that the loudest liberals are around my age or younger. Talk about a young and ignorant crowd.
@mike-2557769
I didn't bring up the banks because its not part of the topic at hand. But for your information, I was completely opposed to the bank bailouts as well. Let's not forget that the Obama administration continued the bank bailouts and had Goldman Sacs as his top campaign contributer. Why aren't YOU complaining about that?
@The Maitre
How interesting of you to attack me for responding to the guy who inferred that I couldn't afford a car, work for a living, or be educated? Hypocripsy at its finest.
Dunkin;
I am a liberal day in and day out. Comparing education I have an undergraduate degree from Harvard in chemistry and business administration. I went to medical school at Duke. I left medical school with $465,000 in government loans. In your world I am a loser who received government handouts who could not survive in the real world - right. I will ignore the first 15 years of my career and focus on last year 2011. I now own 3 apartment complexes, 2 asisted living facilities, 2 restaurants, 5 office buildings, and a hotel. Last year, I paid more than $465,000 in income tax! I was glad to do it, because this country gave me a chance to succeed and my success should be repaid to help the country as a whole. It is idiots like you that want to tear down and criticize this great country - while at the same time refusing to pay your fair share from your successes that make me sick.
Funny, it's people like Dunkin who say "what about me".....I havent heard one liberal say that.
Dunkin may I remind you that just last week the shrub was proclaiming he would bail out the auto industry again. May I also remind you that when the shrub left office the bank bailouts were already in motion....oh except for that little part this president put in about paying it back. Helping out the auto industry was about the only thing that made sense in the whole bailout process. It saved thousands and thousands of jobs.
This country is not going to burn baby burn no matter what people like you wish.
"Don't need a new car, I'm quite happy with my Audi." Some true blooded American dunkin is. I've got 2 GM cars, and owned three prior. You're a useless Bush lover and can't deal with the FACT that you and your party are fools.
Wait a minute. Dunkin is 25 and driving an audi. Either it's a POS audi, in which case he would be lucky to have a new GM car, or he drives a new audi, probably bought using daddy's credit card. So which is it, an ignorant fool or a poor little rich kid living out of daddy's wallet?
I own a GM also, but mine was not built by Americans. Those Australians build a much better car. I have owned many american gm cars. Most were of poor quality. My next car will probably be a Ford or Nissan. GM lost me when they dropped their best make, Pontiac.
Despite, or perhaps because of, the base character assassinations on this thread, I note that Dunkin has not responded to my inquiry, which was perfectly reasonable.
You don't have to agree with everything I said, but if you do disagree I would like to know which points you disagree on and why. I think in the end though we all want Americans to be working, productive, and prosperous.
Yep the "i'm 25" gave it all away. Oh, I see he's done cleaing his room.
Lol you people are clowns. Im also 25 and I own my 2007 audi. Paid cash for it, hows that for you?
Die hard independent Ron Paul supporter here, and DunkinH is slamming you all on valid points. you have no rebuttal except to call him ignorant or an idiot.. what a shame.
oh by the way for you saying that GM paid it all back...
Talk about clowns......
Any one who would insist on selling that stock now, at that kind of a loss is a clown for the ages, especially when you consider that most analysts agree that stock will continue to rise, and is expected to hit 38 this year alone, the difference between that and now is 3.3 billion.
so relax a little let the economy and that stock continue to rise, and not only will there be no loss, but there might even be an actual profit.
All we really have to do is keep the Republicans from tanking the economy again...... and that's the hardest part....
DunkinH and Glen Scutt, you are both suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
good news that they are doing a thrid shift i work the midnight hrs for 13 yrs and havent once disrupt my life or my family's, i take the kids to school when i get off work, take a nap when i get home, get up around noon get errands done, pick up the kids, get dinner ready then take another nap before work, i dont miss school functions, dont have to miss work for doc visits, etc... i say 3rd is the best shift to work
Agreed. I worked night shift for years. Best part is that none of the 'management' people are there to make your life miserable. You can just do your job.
It stinks for a social life if you're in your 20s. And I missed sleeping with my wife (meant in the literal sense, not in the euphemism sense.) Otherwise I tended to enjoy night shifts a lot.
it's not for everybody. I hated 3rd shift . It screwed me up
Dunkin
"what about the rest of us"
Well, when the country does well we all do well. You would rather we slide even further into recession then depression? I'm just fine with my tax dollars going to save these jobs. I'm even better because for everyone of the auto jobs even more are created. Amazing how the multiplier effect works.
Don't know about you, but I don't like seeing people hurting even if I'm not. As far as I'm concerned this was the best use of tax dollars I've seen in awhile. I don't care if I'm not a direct recipient, many, many are. Why do you complain when others may be making a better living? Does that hurt you? Or are you just a complainer?
Of course dunkinh would . If we all fail then he has a legitimate gripe . Now all he can do is rant . Too bad ,despite all the party of no can do , we are recovering . Obama in 12 !
VERY N I C E JOB, Mr President, for sticking up for the country and the american auto industry ! If I could afford it, I'd buy a new AMERICAN car in a heart-beat ! My roots are Northern central Illinois, so I was particulary pleased to hear that the Belvidere plant recieved an 800 million make-over for the new Dodge Dart. AND that they plan to add 1,800 jobs for a 3rd shift due to start this summer!
As for Michigan? WAY to go there as well! But I find it hard to believe that the *MITT* -- aka -- let the american auto industry go bankrupt -- Romney has the Kahonas to eveh show his face in Michigan. It just go's to show his hyprocrisy and flip-flopping has NO SHAME! I can't stand Rick -- I-want-to-return-to-the-1800's- Santorum either, but I SINCERELY hope he kicks Romneys @ss in the Michigan GOP primary ! !
The auto makers that could not make good decisions should go bankrupt. The bailouts only managed to keep a ship from sinking, it did nothing to fix the holes. And this recent upswing is only a temporary one. If you disagree just look at the airline industry. Of course, while you are praising the auto bailouts why not criticize why there was no bailout for grocery stores or factories or small businesses? The answer is because they dont have Unions that bring votes. I for one am glad GM did is still around but it had nothing to do with a bailout. If they went bankrupt they would have restructured, become leaner and more efficient and come back within a couple of years without being beholden to the state. It is a myth propagated by the left that bankruptcy means out of business. Hell airlines file for bankruptcy as part of their normal cost of doing business. Bankruptcy is a win win like punishing your child for stealing a pack of gum. The punishment might hurt a little but that child learns not to do it again. What did GM learn from this experience? Papa Government will just give us money if we screw up again!
Not to mention all the jobs that are indirectly related to the auto industry and rely on the auto industry for their jobs. Think of the tire, glass, sales and dealer employees that were saved. Were not just talking about a few thousand jobs here. We are talking about jobs in small towns all across this nation. But jobs........"we don't need no stinking jobs" McConnell says differently.
Only problem I see with all the good vibes for GM, is, it is a shame they are not building a NEW 1.1 BILLION dollar plant in MICHIGAN instead of CHINA.
Willard Mitt's buddies would raid the company for the benefit of their Cayman accounts.
Bailouts for the Repuicks Financial system is another aspect. What if the banks and financial brokers were to have been allowed to fail, Bush wish was to get the financial system bailed out Bush said they were to big to fail. I would have loved to see all them "CEO" on the bread lines at the soup kitchens. The Repuicks don't call this socialism when their rich friends get bailed out. But when some poor person with nothing and not his fault but the fault of Mitt for closing down his company they call it socialism. Repuicks get your head out of your A$$$$$$
When gas hits $6.00 a gallon you can say good bye to the 2nd and 3rd shift.
And have GM shares hit $52.00 a share yet? That's what's needed before the government (taxpayers) get repaid.
What repayment? Obama's car czar has already said that taxpayers will never see $14 billion repaid.
Always looking at the up side of things must be one of those rose colored glasses republicans.
The auto industry was saved for everybody, it is not just union shift workers whose jobs are affected but all the people who sell cars, parts and accessories. Not to mention all the repair shops that need the industry too.
We taxpayers are never going to get money back. It is lost money just like every other dollar the government manages to take.
In the 70's the government bailed out the railroad and made a tidy profit from it. That profit never managed to come back to taxpayers though. It stayed with the government where it was mismanaged until it was all gone.
Also in the 70's the government bailed out Lockheed and yet today they continue to lay people off annually.
The government bailed out Franklin National Bank and then sold it to a European consortium in one of the earliest moves sending our banking industry overseas.
In 1980 the government bailed out Chrysler. The loans were repaid with a profit but of course those profits never came back to the Taxpayers. Our taxes continued to increase and guess what Chrysler failed again and again got a bail out.
There is also the Illinois National Trust Bank which the government bailed out and lost nearly 2 billion dollars of our money. It was sold at a loss to Bank of America. The same Bank of America that recently made it a policy to screw its customers and fought against the government to regulate them screwing their customers.
In 2001 the government bailed out the airline Industry yet again and the result is less service and 5.00 for a small can of soda.
And since I mentioned Bank of America, while they were happy to buy a failed bank from the government leaving the government and thus the taxpayers taking a huge loss they did nto seem to mind when they were given bail out money in 2009 to compensate for their financial losses. So apparently the government can bail bail out a company, sell the company for a loss and the bail out the company that bought it when they in turn run out of money.
Three decades of government bail outs and somehow, despite the best efforts of the government our economy is still in shambles, public trust is at an all time low and the beneficiaries of said bailouts do nothing more than make the same mistakes and come back to the same had for more food.
how much in tax revenue has the government collected form people working good jobs compared to what they would be paying if we let them all go on unemployment.
I bet when you calculate the cause and effect you will see how great this was and will be for us, and we gained an didn't lose a dime.
but if your not complaining about this you would be complaining that people on unemployment are just lazy good for nothing losers... SO I'm willing to bet there is no talking any sense into you types
WE gave our tax money to a private company .... Obama crossed the line and decided who keeps their jobs (auto industry) and who loses their job (ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE) If a company cannot succeed without help it doesn't deserve, it should go BANKRUPT!!!
golliegeewillikers-1980315
Your right.Just your price is a little high.$5 bucks a gallon will do it i'm afraid.
Even if the money isn't directly paid back it's coming back in the form of increased tax revenues not only from the additional auto workers but all the jobs the auto industry is supporting that are growing with it. It's coming back (in a sense) by people coming off unemployment and other safety net programs and getting back to work.
Why can't people simply let an American success story be an American success story?
Oh by the way JW ..........Bush gave the auto industry initial bailouts under TARP money when he was bailing out the banks, Obama gave a second lifeline to the auto comapnies when he came into office in the form of loans. Bush's money will never be repaid, Obama's money has already started being paid back. Will they pay all of it back still remains to be seen. Either way it was a small price to save up to a million auto industry related jobs. We p!ssed more money than that rebuilding Iraq. That created maybe a couple 1000 US jobs.
Great news. Although, I don't plan to purchase a GM product or Chrysler product. Ford maybe. I'm just happy with my Toyota and Honda. American made too.
They are not American made, they are assembled in America with all foreign parts. There is a big difference between made in America and assembled in America.
Ford is the best of the Big 3. They never took a bailout. Toyota and Honda's plants are more efficient than Detroit because they aren't controlled by union thugs.
unions are not thugs.. that hatred you have is repulsive, but hey that a tea partier for ya
When Tsunami's hit in Japan, good luck getting parts for your American made Foreign car.
Dunkin hates Unions but loves Corporations. He is one of those that believe Corporations are people and Unions are thugs.
How can you argue with someone, who is without a doubt, making trolling statements and lacks any real substance?
Contrary to certain people's belief that Ford never got financial assistance from the government, it actually did. Retooling loans and a certain cash grant that went unnoticed during the crisis in 08-09.
Ford also got a favorable deal when it was indirectly saved by the governments direct saving of GM and Chrysler.
Honda and Toyota can only compete with Detroit because they pay less. They also provide less benefits. Detroit has always provided best wages and benefits. And the reason why GM is doing so well is their new line of cars. The Cruze is selling like mad and 41mpg. Also Hyundai, KIA, etc build their plants in low wage right to work states like MS and GA and then the profits go back to Japan and Korea.
BUY AMERICAN!
And the Asssssol with the Audi shoot the bastard
Dunkkin How about American jobs
I'll drive a Jeep until I'm in the grave. Then when I'm bored with that, I'll drive out of the grave and keep on going.
Dunkin doesn't care about American jobs he cares about himself, that's it period. He waves the flag and thinks he's a Patriot like the other sheep in the tbag movement, but all he really cares for is himself. Of course not a peep out of any of them when Bush was bailing out the banks and car companies. Not a peep when Bush was compounding the debt with 2 wars and a tax break for billionaires. Not a peep when Bush was incouraging Fannie mae and Freddie Mac to write up those home loans to unqualified lenders on over inflated home values. Not a peep because tbaggers are no more than republicans in sheep clothing. They did the same to Clinton, when he took office. Dump so much crap on the new president that it distracts the people so you can't govern, then lie.....LIE......LIE.....LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....about everything to hide the fact that 2 BUSHES= 2 RECESSIONS!!!!!!
@ you are all pathetic
bush actually raised the red flags to congress in 2005 and it fell upon deaf ears. i believe it was a liberal democrat barney frank that said fannie and freddie were completely solvent.
people that oppose bailouts for the auto industry definitely oppose wall street bailouts
to say otherwise is nothing but ignorant
Be a JOB CREATOR, people! Buy American!!!
Not to make this political but I think that this is what our President meant when he said "recovery will take time". The bailout happened in 2009 and change is just now happening. We have got to stop being a society that expects 180 degree change over night. I believe the current Administration is putting things in place to foster a complete American revivial. But it takes time. We have to stop this need for instant gratification and put in the time it takes to get us back on our feet. And like this article shows, we are well on our way.
I would hardly call an economy that makes people move around to work at lower wages than before on 3rd shift assembly lines in a position that may only be temporary a sign of economic recovery. It is just a sign that the checks finally cleared the bank. The same people who mismanaged the companies are still calling the shots. Economic recovery is what happen when the government handouts stop and the companies can function on their own and the people dont have to move to a new city to do the same job they were doing 5 years ago for 15000 less money.
It took eight years for the Republican President, Republican House and Republican Senate to drive us into the ditch. They have used every tactic they can for the past three years to keep us there, and blame it on the Democrats.
All of you losers keep whining about taxpayer money you will never get back. how much of the Bush tax cuts do you think you're going to get back. What's the tally of jobs created by the so called "job creators" since the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. You guys are a bunch of country backwooded hicks that every time you open your mouth ignorance stifles the room. Got off this site. Go post at Fox Noise
Chuck, when it was a Republican House and a Republican Senate unemployment was around 5% and the country experienced 52 straight months of economic growth, in a challenging post-9/11 environment.
When the Democrats took over control of the House and the Senate in 2006, that's when things went downhill fast. You can thank Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for driving us into the ditch and Obama for pushing us to the edge of the cliff we now find ourselves on. Remember him promising us unemployment wouldn't hit 8%, it hasn't been under 8% since!
They drove up our debt. Forced banks to give mortgages to people who couldn't possibly afford to pay it back, and then turn around and blame the banks when the house of cards the Democrats built fell apart. To make things worse, they took over the White House and things have gotten progressively worse, not better. We went from $10 trillion in debt to $16 trillion just since Obama took office. Trillions in spending and not much to show for it. Time for Obama, Pelosi and Reid and a lot of their minions to go to the end of the unemployment line where they sent millions of Americans. Let them finally feel the pain THEY created.
David...it's easy to have 5% unemployment and economic growth when you're gearing up and heading into a war. Defense contractors made a killing all funded by writing blank checks on money that didn't exist racking up our federal debt.
Candlewycke - I think that the word recovery is not clearly defined for most people. In your post you pointed out that economic recovery happens when people don't have to move to another state/town and work for 15K less. But thats what recovery is. Expecting to go back to the inflated wages and prices of the mid 2000's is counter productive. While the company is rebuilding, the employee has to as well. Anyone who expects to work for the same amount from the company that laid them off is living in a dream. And I calculated the $29 this worker is making and it beats my salary hands down. At around 60k a year, 3rd shift is not a bad trade off at all.
Remember Old man Bush could not fix Regan's bull shnit and didn't do anything for 4 years it took Clinton to turn it around
Pork and Bean then why do you think these CEO's should get any bonus at all, they shouldn't get them, why do you thing the owners of these companies should get paid at all they directed the company down
Clearly you guys whining about the auto bail out paid no attention to it then and are just now whining about it. Go take a look at what went down when they got that money. And no, the same guys are NOT still running the show. Unlike the banks that just rocked right on with business and bonuses as usual after they were handed 700billion with no strings attached. Funny, you same people were screaming your heads off about the President making demands about the executives in the auto business and how he had no right to do it but today you've all suddenly got selective amnesia. My bet is you just like to hear/read your own incessant whining. never mind how foolish it makes you look.
whatever. never owned a gm or chrysler vehicle and never will - especially now.
why is that Krm (the "especially now" part)?
really why do you hate America so much
"especially now"
....obama bailed out GM, specifically gave the unions preferential treatment, with our tax dollars....that ultimately end up in the unions coffers....which end up in campaign contributions to democrats, or to 527s that fight against republicans...like scott walker and the 25 million spent on recall. or 'media matters' or some other left wing propaganda vehicle (no pun intended)
it's kind of an insult to someone who worked in tennessee, a right to work state, to see that to be a part of obamas recovery...you will have to be a union member, and pay the DNC to work. i feel sorry for the guy in the article, flint is a cold ghost town of a city.
i used to like GM and chevrolet cars, but ever since the bailout....and the union bosses getting violent with americans...it just feels wrong to even consider buying anything made by such aggressive socialistic worker unions in america.
i disliked the idea of a union man telling me i had to pay him to work at a company before obama was president.....now, after the bailouts, kickbacks, and union leaders warming up crowds with "lets take these sons of bitches out" -jimmy hoffa jr, introducing a smiling barak obama to a cheering crowd of gm workers last year. the unions hate right to work americans...i mean they absolutely hate the freedom of americans to work freely, without having to pay socialistic worker party union fees.
i will never be under the power of any union ever again....they will have to kill me before i ever join a union or me to support union by buying their products if i can help it. this means not buying any gm products or products that are made only in unionized states.
ford did not take any of the stimulus. they make automobiles in right to work states. and i know that money will not go to unions....well as much as GM money goes to unions anyway.
keck,
Don't feel sorry for that guy; he's actually going to start earning a good wage and benefits again to support his family. I'm not even going to comment on the rest of your hyperbole-filled rant you went on, but have fun living in fear of the sun.
Keck,
Obviously you are deluded with your hatred for President Obama.
Bush did the auto bail out............doh!! In fact he just said he'd do it again:
http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/07/10342178-bush-on-auto-bailouts-id-do-it-again
This is when he announced it in 2008..........geez the revisionist history of some conservatives is amazing.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1208/16740.html
You owm some foreign Shnit
So the Bush tax breaks for Billionaires never ended up in Republican coffers in the form of campaign donations, particularly now since the Supreme Court (bought and paid for by the Bush Administration) has opened the door for third party pac money to proliferate the campaign process. Kreck your just a simpleton.
This is great news! And shame on all you haters. Anytime Americans get put back to work, it's a good thing! And Romney, thanks for doubling down, on the fact you would have just let so many Auto jobs go down the drain! Jak- seriously, do you know how many GM trucks are still on the road? Hell our 96 Pontiac Grand-Am is still cruising along.
digital noise.....at least you dont drive a P.O.N.T.I.A.C. found on road dead
Third shift is when most "factory freaks" get produced, so this is even better all around!
All you negative Obama haters just can't stand this can you?
I would love to be there when Mitt tells Detroit that the auto bailouts were a mistake!
DunkinH, it did NOT cost 14 billion. That much was wagered, if you want to think of it that way, or invested, but all of it has come back already except 1.3 billion. Close the books now and that would be a loss, but as things are going I see no reason that too will not be paid back. Meaning NO loss, except in votes for the defeatist nay-sayers who disapprove of Obama on principle and against our own best interests.
You know, it's a feel-good story that shows the Federal bailout worked. Why do people have to denigrate Obama about this? Don't you want to see other less fortunate people happy to finally be working after being laid off for so long??
The bailouts worked for the auto industry, yes. However the bailouts of the banking industry merely allowed the banks to continue their fraudulent practices.
Actually people denigrate Obama and Bush for doing it because it was a bad idea that will really accomplish nothing long term other than cost the tax payer more money and make it certain that this same problem will pop up again in another couple of years. Only Left Wing Liberal wackos seem to think this is about hating Obama. Of course those same people are so seduced by Obama that they fail to recognize him as just another politician out for his own benefit.
Vockler rule and other new regulations are being created for the banking industry. $25 billion settlement was issued, and there are pending cases..
Your info about the Banking bailout is not completely true
I'm sure the banks are not as profligate as they used to be. But then again, as you say, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Seriously, you think 25 billion for 5 major banks is a huge settlement? That's like fining an NFL player who make millions a year $5K for a late hit on a QB!
There are a few, mostly Republicans, that can't get their minds around the fact that saving General Motors and our auto industry was a good thing. Investing in alternative energy, education, and our infra structure which the president wants to do are also good and necessary things but if an idea doesn't involve cutting a government program or making sure some rich guys taxes don't go up they don't want to get involved.
Bob L, you are kidding me, right? GM and Chrysler would've survived just fine by going through a routine Chapter 11 bankruptcy and restructuring. The ONLY reason Obama stuck his nose in it was to protect the unions that contribute so much to his campaign coffers.
In the end he forced GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy anyway. But he made darn sure the unions came out smelling like a rose while other creditors, suppliers, and investors got the shaft. You also seem to forget that Obama & Co. forced a lot of dealers out of business in the process. Far too many, as it turns out. Now GM and Chrysler are trying to ADD dealers because the Obama clowns forced the closure of some in lucrative markets.
There have been plenty of "normal" bankruptcies in this country including the major airlines. They seemed to have weathered the storm just fine without Obama's interference. I agree with Mitt Romney that had GM and Chrysler gone that route instead that they'd be a lot further along with their recovery. Just like the entire U.S. economy would be a lot further along if Obama hadn't screwed it up by focusing on Obama-care instead of jobs.
Actuall David, Bush stuck his nose in it. Obama just made them accountable. So if you have a problem with it you can reach Bush in Dallas, Texas where he's in hiding. Guess you were in a coma when all this actually went down.
Every GM car I've owned has been a piece of junk. Water leaks, electrical problems, engine problems. I'm afraid to touch another.
How many have you owned? Personally, if I have a bad experience with a product, I don't buy another one. Doesn't seem smart to me.
Just two, eight years apart. I was hoping they had improved quality by the time I purchased the second one. Apparently not. There won't be a third.
My husband is still driving his 'beloved' '76 Chevy van. I'm giving my '03 Trailblazer to my daughter-in-law this month and buying a Terrain.
Although I did love my Celica years ago other than that we've always bought 'American' brands.

2002 Chevy Cavolier with 160,000 miles and not 1 problem than normal maintenance.
Why are the workers worried? OUR tax dollars ensure they have a job. It's like they are working for the government. They can do any stupid things they want....WE'LL pay the bill.
Ah you are confusing the workers with the bankers again. Workers put in an honest day's work. A banker puts in a day of stealing from you. You seem more tolerant of the guy who steals from you.
Don't buy a Government Motors car. You will be supporting Communism.
Buy a car made from freedom. Ford Freedom.
You obviously don't even know what communism is but you reason for buying a car seems silly. I'd look at the cars and buy the best one for me whether it be Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota.
THey have to be competitive.
Shareholders may have lost money but I don't recall any of the supply chain vendors loosing money. Also, if you were a shareholder how much were the shares actually worth? From what I remember, GM stock wasn't even being traded on the stock market.
I'm kinda happy the shareholders got nothing, that money should go to the actual workers who put in a days work not some shareholder yelling from his soft seat how hard he has worked for his money
I don't like bailouts but if they are done the right way, like the auto industry, I believe they are beneficial (just look at the balance of how much has been paid off by the auto-industry and how much is owed). Just ask all the auto-workers like the one in this story.
In addition, people need to realize the competition is global, and all major economies in the world use government money to help their vital industries because it just makes sense (the government can never create the number of jobs that would have been lost if the major US auto-makers went broke).
Politicians need to acknowledge when government policy works, and stop being so negative. I think many people in this country are tired of this negative attitude such as: No it didn't work! Worse ever! A disaster!
So when you are talking about the balance sheet are you taking into account the fact that Chrysler has actually been bailed out twice in as many decades and keeps failing despite the money from the government? Bankruptcy solves these problems by forcing companies to restructure and make better decisions. The problem is not bailouts. The problem is the government bailouts have shown over three decades to fail each and every time and think about this. The money for bailouts comes from taxpayers. Yet even when the money is paid back our taxes keep going up so the government is making a profit on other peoples money without actually paying that money back! If your bank did that you would be up at arms demanding action.
Candlewycke...Federal taxes are not going up. They're about the lowest they've ever been. Maybe it's your local taxes that are going up, which has nothing to do with the fact that the bailout money is being paid back. Think about it.
You're right that Chrysler was bailed out before but you missed the part where every dime plus interest was paid back and early. Go look it up. Remember Lee Iacocca
Don't forget that it was the Republicans who said you were unemployed because you were lazy and the government should do nothing to help you because it just makes you more lazy.
when did republicans say that ?
DeLay has lined up an entire cabal of GOP cretins like Rep. Dean Heller from Nevada and Steve King from Iowa, who have expressed their opinion that lazy, shiftless American workers are so thrilled to receive their unemployment checks that they have no incentive to look for work. It’s no surprise that Republicans like DeLay were the ones most responsible for moving jobs out of the U.S. to sweatshop havens like Saipan and India. In fact, the little runt actually helped American corporations get tax breaks for outsourcing jobs.
Republicans across the country are calling the unemployed lazy. They say that unemployment insurance discourages people from looking for work! It would almost be funny if it werenÂ’t so shockingly removed from the reality of the situation.
There are five unemployed for every job opening, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. There are simply not enough jobs available for every hardworking American. But while Democrats want to help, Republicans just want to say no.
From Tea Party candidates like Sharron Angle, who called the unemployed "spoiled," to U.S. Senator Richard Burr, Republicans from every region and in every position are making these claims! Is this who we want controlling Congress?
with a little racism thrown in:
Apparently, Gingrich wants to up the ante on Rick Santorum who recently said to nodding heads in almost all-white Iowa:
It's not when they said it. It's how often they say it.
Bill I am in the auto business. When a customer comes in buying a two year old car and has income of $700 for her and $687 each for her 4 kids, I puke. This LAZY person getting working Americans HAND OUTS of almost $3,500 a month before even getting out of bed. That government creation with my taxes is what we are talking about. Third generation welfare rats living high on free money workin da syztm. Then Libbs brain wash recipients this pathetic red/blue system for votes?? WTH?
That was all over the news. I seen it.
PS it happens about 4 times a month on very similar situations BTW
I call BS Rick. you story is purely made up BS. Which by the way is easily debunked using, wait for it......the internet. Oh an by the way, the car dealers were/are just as bad and the mortgage companies about handing out loans people can't afford. they were ready to get me in that car when I moved without any job to verify.
I remember when Moore introduced many people to Flint Michigan in his documentary. It was a horrendous situation!
I am happy these guys are working and doing better. I feel some hate in here over the 29.00 an hour salary. Yes, it is more than an excellent salary for someone who does assembly work and yes you can be mad about it because you are struggling. Its normal to say, "what the heck?"
Just remember this, however. If this were you, you would not hesitate to take the job either - put yourself in their shoes. Government motors or not. "I am you and you are me."
You don't have to like it, just be happy for the families who are making life a little better for themselves.
So you're cool with Bush bailing out Wall Street but not the auto industry? I'm sure if Bush had done this you would be cool with it. I was for it but only if GMs quality improved and it seems it has. If they get bloated and arrogant again I say let them die. They built complete JUNK from 77 until the bailout quite frankly, sure there may have been a few OK cars and trucks here and there. Hopefully they learned a lesson and will remain competitive.
I think that's great news that they added 3rd shift back My father works at the Toledo North Assembly plant for Jeep they've had alot of tough times there ... I can't wait til they add there exstention to there building on there it means alot of steady solid work for alot of people that have beeen waiting for a long time . More car production means more hrs./ work for the american workers. I live in florida and my husband is in the construction field ( concrete block layer) there is no work here what so ever ( It is bad here) as soon as I get word We are moving up to Ohio I can't wait my family is there , my dad is getting ready to retire from Jeep and my husband will be working there God Bless The Autoworkers of America They have been through alot!!!!
Did no one notice the subject in the article, Mr Pylant stayed out of work for two years because he couldn't find a job that paid what he had been used to? IMHO, Ones pride shouldn't stand in the way of taking ANY job if it helps feed your family and pay bills. This is why we need to keep extending unemployment benefits? Holy Crap!
Well Rick , while you are on your high horse maybe it should be pointed out to you that in the article is stated they Mr. Pylant is now living with 2 other guys who all moved for the job. And it didn't mention where he lived, if he even has a family or if he got unemployment for those 2 years. So, maybe YOU are the one who needs to notice what is in the article instead of assuming and make an .....well you know the rest. IMHO, your HO means diddly.
