If not chimps then who? You're telling me that working on chimps is so bad, what we do is so horrible. You want all of that on HUMANS? How can you sit there and tell me, "Look at what you're doing to that chimp! Look over there, there's a dude desperate for money! Go and do all the things that are too horrible for chimps on humans! I mean, you've been torturing animals! That's cruel! there are plenty of children in China that you can test on!" Don't test on animals. That's cruel. But it's okay to test on humans. Or don't test at all. And if you need medical help but there is no cure, well, you know the reason why.
Daryl,
What where you attempting to say? It seems that you felt very strongly, but can you come back and write with more thought and less speed - we deserve to know what you mean to say.
All the best
Personally I think Chimps should be exempt from research because they are innocent creatures. I think we should use criminals like child molesters and rapist to be the subjects of research. Why not??? They are useless to society and cannot be rehabilitated. Save a Chimp!!! Use a criminal....
AMen..cruelty for cruelty.
I'd rather have testing done on chimpanzees then lose one of my family, friends, or YOUR loved ones However, there should be a time, age limit, or testing criteria when a chimp can retire to a sanctuary. With all the million/billion of dollars that the drug companies and medical for profit companies make off the research why can't they foot the bill to give these chimps a decent retirement life? Aren't the chimpanzees beneficial just like other workers who get retirement???
We do this only because we can...might is right. Every living thing is equal. No human's soul is worth more than any animal's. Why not experiment on incarcerated violent offenders? They are behind bars too...and considerably less valuable to the world in their current use of their human abilities and intelligence.
There is absolutely no reason to use chimps for Hepatitis C research. They already have a cure for this: interferon and ribavirin. It works and there have already been clinical trials on humans. This was done over a decade ago. Free the chimps. Humans are no better then chimps are. They are actually worse. It is disgraceful what humans do to other animals in the name of science.
Testing on animals won't save human lives. Test on inmates if it is so humane, let them give back to society.
Agree!
After watching this show, I am so amazed that there is still an issue with this subject. Jane Goodall has given us so much intelligent information for so many years, why is this even an issue? Does one man have the right to say that experimentation on chimpanzees in the future might help human beings? Who made him god? He really made me very angry. Please save these gentle beings ( sorry, they are not always so gentle in captive situations) but certainly need to be treated with as much respect as our pet Dog or Cat!
I cannot believe we as a nation are still doing research like this, with no ethical guides even. We call ourselves leaders of nations but fall way behind in the kindness factor. Ban chimp research totally and let these relatives of the human race find a bit of peace in their final days.
Check out these quotes:
"If we cut up beasts simply because they cannot prevent us and because we are backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to cut up imbeciles,
criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons. ~C.S. Lewis"
"The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, Can they suffer?" ~Jeremy Bentham"

Let's test on captured terrorists or inmates on death row or serving life sentences. They will finally be able to add some value to the human race.
the researchers should be locked up and unnecessary testing done on them! See how fast they would change their inhumane practices!
This practice needs to be banned NOW! I would like to do testing on the guy in the suit, who thinks its just fine to keep chimps in the lab until their death. We are supposes to better then this. Its wrong and inhumane.
Agree with Logan....Noble....they`re imprisoned. We think we are so entitled that we can take another life away from another mammal.....and use them, torture them, give them no quality of life. I`m appalled in our country, in 2012 this is still practiced. I cannot imagine doing this everyday....something is missing here......oh yeah, it is called HUMANITY!
Much thanks to Brian Williams and NBC for bringing this story to the American people. It is time that all animal testing comes to an end. Science has shown that this type of research is no longer needed. We need to make the greater sacrifice hear and trust that our technology will work. Kudos to Brian!
All this talk about animals, yes it is sad, however what about all the innocent CHILDREN that die by the will of their mothers due to abortion, anyone care about that??? How about a segment to defend the innocent CHILDREN that also don't have a choice in the say and are unable to protect themselves. 5 chimps died in the last 10 years... how many innocent children died due to abortion in the same 10 years, anyone care to count??? This generation is sick! We care more about trees and animals than about our own children.
babiesrule,
5 chimps died in the last 10 years ... what? I worked at Chimp Haven and the numbers are many times that if you look to all of the sanctuaries in the U.S. that provide retirement care to the chimps that ultimately die quite often as complications due to the experiments they suffered, including diabetes, heart disease, cancers, complications from HIV and Hep C... And this does not begin to address those chimps in private (i.e. non-federally funded) research on chimps raised by private breeding facilities.
The question is whether we should engage harmful practices on anyone capable of feeling and understanding what is actually happening to them.

Retire the chimps and let the drug companies pay the total cost. They profited from the research. Now let them repay the chimps for thier sacrifice.
Release All the animals from research facilities. Like the previous comment, their sacrifice is not "Noble" It is not voluntary and it is TORTURE, pure and simple.
I simply agree with pretty much everyone else, the majority believe like i do and it should be banned all together. torture needed to be noted from the beginning. this torture should of never occured in my thinking views. no mammals and most definately no animals. this is rediculous and needs to stop this torture acts immediately without hesitation or anymore delays. save our mammals!i am a huge animal lover and i believe that abuse of mammals or any living thing should be justified and the one involved should be compensated for all the misery and suffering they been through. how about the persons doing these testings be tested since their torturing and doing inhumane things to mammals. wonder how the shoe would feel on the other foot for these inhumane heartless killers, pure murderers.
I am confused about something from what I watched. Lisa Meyers, the issue I am arguing is about Ken and Rosie. Are they being put back in to have more experiments done to them after 30 years, or are they going to retire after 30 years?
I believe they are not being retired.
Yes, the older scientist in the suit said they are to be kept like a library of books on a shelf... just in case they are "so called needed" in the future for more testing. So Ken and Rosie are basically jailed for the researchers to use in the future. They are not to be set free. It's horrible, just horrible!!! There are thousands of primates all over our country being used for research. Here where I live, there has been protesting on one such research lab. If you are appalled, do something, speak up, be a whistle blower, protest. Create awareness. It's 2012, it's time for change!!
