It's simply not right to torture other mammals.
AMEN!
....and again.....AMEN
Leave the chimps where they belong and experiment on death row inmates
what did you people eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner? no meat? if any of you ate meat but protest this get real. the animals raised for meat are grossly mistreated compared to these chimps. at least these chimps are saving are kids and parents lives not just filling your big ass bellies!
I love animals as much as anyone, but another biased, "poor little animals" story. The research being done may save your child's life. What did we get--a tear jerker that 73% of idiots respond to!
I was a strict vegetarian for 20 years and came to the realization that no matter how much I avoid animals in my diet, they are still in just about everything else we consume. It's very easy to avoid mistreated livestock if you are an educated consumer and actually buy your meat from local farmers. The fact that a chimp is even being compared to livestock is repulsive. Do you know how intelligent a chimp is? They have social hierarchy comapred to humans, and emotions that can be seen in their everyday interactions.
Before you (@really 69) make comparisons to chimps and livestock you should look at the bigger picture. These amazing creatures are an ENDANGERED species, but because the government in our BIG BUSINESS run country say it's okay to test we should just turn cheek.
Oh, and if these chimps are saving ARE (should be OUR) kids and parents, I'd rather have someone with intellect voting and commenting on such a controversial topic.
Do you realize that evolution says that we ALL came from a common ancestor? So even chimpanzees and humans are somehow also related to livestock.
We have 5+ billion people on earth. Do tests on people. If we're not willing to do that, then we deserve to die. We should take responsibility for ourselves. Leave the chimps alone.
I worked at Chimp Haven, it is an amazing organization and the Chimps absolutely deserve to be treated with respect. Retire them and ban Chimpanzee research, Chimps are not your ordinary animal, they are more like us then you could ever know unless you've been around them.
These poor animals have no say. Please think about research on people who volunteer to have this done on themselves! They are paid and the FDA approves these trials. These animals have rights. How many chimps have to pay the price for invasive treatment. My heart breaks seeing the stress the poor animals go thru and stay with them even when they are retired. No animal should have to go thru this...
You are absolutely correct....I know as I work with animals as well.
I agree, I worked at Chimps, Inc for an internship and no one ever really knows what it is like unless they are around chimps. They are amazing and intelligent and feel emotions, they are just like us. And not to mention they are an extremely endangered species. Why dont we test on the man that is in prison for raping and murdering a small child...I know I am not alone in saying I would much rather have that happening than testing on intelligent beings that have no say and have not done anything to hurt anyone.
Not just chimpanzees. No animal should be used in scientific research. Ever.
How can you say that? Do you know how many HUMAN lives have been saved because of research on animals. I love animals but how can you never test medicine or vaccines on them if it may be able to save a life? I bet if you personally had a loved one that had a disease and was saved because of a vaccine then you would not be talking.
Exactly!!
I'm on the fence with vaccines anyway & to force animals to be tested for our benefit for vaccines or makeup (lets face it for the financial benefit of the pharmaceutical industry) in the name of research when there are alternatives, is beyond appalling.. It saddens me to know that we have so many narcissistic humans making decisions for the majority. I am embarrassed to be human.
Leah Zerbib and bearswamplady,
Here is the answer as to why many would not permit chimpanzee research, even if it meant a member of their own family;

All primates are cognitive individuals.
save the chimps and use inmates that are on death row. they didnt care about taking a life so use theres to save others and let the chimps go.
I totally agree. There are far more animals that deserve "a life" than those (people) who have thrown their own away. Why can't we just call these people out...please, for the love of God!
This assumes:
It is only after one admits these assumptions are being made that an actual decision can be made.
Save a human life at all cost, use any means needed.
yes, i agree. Human life is much more valuable.
There are way more humans than chimps in this world so we should do testing on humans instead. We could stand to lose some humans on this planet. Lets use some of these crimnals for some of these test. That would make me feel better.
So, all the other countries not using primates for biomedical research (except the US and a country in Africa) are not saving human lives? There are technological advances that make it unnecessary. It is a waste of valuable resources and a waste of their lives. That is ONE research facility. They didn't go "behind the scenes of the secretive areas" in any other lab. Even though they may share some of our DNA, many times the test results do not cross over. If they did, you wouldn't have one lawsuit against a drug company for killing patients...
i completely agree with you!!!!
It is not moral or ethical to test on any animal. As for the person who says that "human life is much more valuable," that is a very dangerous assumption. It is not a statement that anyone on this planet has a right to decide and furthermore a very slippery slope. How would you like to be locked in a cage for all of your natural life and be poked and prodded and mistreated for the "advancement" of a species that does so at your peril. A species that wishes to keep you and use you at all costs and without any consent or accountability. If you are inclined to believe in a God or the supernatural or even nothing at all; at very least basic decency and a want of clear conscience should lead us towards a ban of such horrible cruelty. If you want to see what is in the heart of a people witness their treatment of the least among them...
Thank you for your eloquent statement. Please sign the petition I am initiating tomorrow at CARE2Make a Difference to end these practices and most of all to free to Rosie and Ken.
It hasn't been so long ago that American researchers subjected African Americans to experimentation to aid in finding a cure for syphilis. Of course these humans weren't given information about the risk to themselves or their families so they couldn't really "consent" to the research that resulted in their disease or death. Looking back on this scandal, one might hope that we would be repulsed by experimentation on any sentient being. . .as opposed to being the only developed nation continuing this research and confinement of chimpanzees.
Free Rosie and Ken for the good of all our souls.
Bwinnicott,
Please see my post on page 6. I'd like your thoughts.
Cheers!
Ok, well then stop being fat, lazy, smoking, drinking, drug addicts who have no regard for themselves...which is where most of our health care dollars go.
Science has evolved beyond the need to use chimpanzees. We've been listening to the research industry's false promises and assurances for decades. It is time to end the torture.
no more testing on any animals you people have no heart no remorse dont use anymore never different ways of testing all these people should go to jail and fined 25000000 and animals have feelings like us BANNED BANNED BANNED
GOD HAVE MERCY on this chimpanzees are almost humans i hate wend people hurt animal what is going on whit that guy he looks evil ,,,I CRY WEND I SEEN THIS SHOW TODAY ,,,THIS IS NOT R,,,,...
I suppose you're the same kind of person that believes in evolution?...yet you say "God have mercy on these chimps". God put animals here for a reason. And its not to be treated like humans. And nada, they don't have feelings like humans. In no way shape or form are animals and humans even close.
Whatever you believe in evolution or God. Who gave humans the right to torture ANY being on this earth!!
fsc22tb,
I offer you a somewhat different perspective:

If 50 chimpanzees dies in the process of saving one human, then it's worth it. A pig artery saved my son's life. That did not happen by accident.
I agree. Human life is much more valuable.
Amen!
jacckmac1, that is wonderful for your son, and yet that is in the PAST. What was does not mean it needs to continue to be. I have spinal problems and have human cadaver bones. If I were on life support, I would be extremely happy to save your son or anyone else with my organs. Organ donations are becoming increasingly popular. Also, I commend anyone who donates their body to medical research after death. This is something I intend to do, and hopefully others will too.
They are animals they are not human. For the people who say we shouldnt expermient on them then tell them to volunteer! So these people would rather have humans die from the disease rather then perform tests on animals. IGNORANCE!
I completely agree with you!!! A human life is more valuable than any animal life.
Ignorance is thinking that we are above all animals on earth. We do not have a right to treat animals this way.
We brought a lot of the disease on ourselves by using insecticides and chemicals in our enviroments and food. So if it is self inflicted we should bere the burden not an animal that does not have a choice in the matter.
Humans are above animals. If testing on animals saves a human life, then it is worth it. animallover, would you like to test vaccines, etc on your child or a chimp?
its called stem cell research!!!
Haven't you heard? Medicine is not an exact science. Everytime they give YOU a drug (chimp tested and approved) and you have a reaction do you think that they run back to the Test Chimp and say "now why didn't you tell me about that one". That being liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure or developing a different form of cancer while trying to irradicate the body of an existing one. The list goes on, don't tell me how well this works. My husband died...taking approved drugs.
"Chimpanzees are not humans. They are chimpanzees."
It is better to test solutions on chimpanzees than let humans die of diseases all over the planet. What a silly discussion.
I say run the tests on our congressional representatives & let all the chimps go!
If you don't want humans to die around the WORLD then give food, water and shelter to Africa...most of the world dies because of lack of basic needs not freaking a cure to Hep C...
You people think that every animal dies to save a child who is sick...this is not the case for the majority of problems tested on animals. Research is mostly done to develop drugs for adults (aka to make money for drug companies)...disease is a part of life. Research can be done w/o the use of animal torture. Yes, animals are not humans BUT animals should let be animals...honestly I think we should test on humans who are willing. At least they can make an informed choice.
I'm also just going to say it...not all lives are worth saving...if you're a child than you deserve to live but after that we should be able to qualify your life. Medicine has gotten out of control...that is why we are broke in health care...do we really need to DO EVERYTHING for EVERYONE regardless of how old you are or how much you have abused your body? I think not. Take that money and save children and those who don't even have food, water or shelter in foreign countries.
PS...for those of you who are against vaccines...I'm just going to say it...YOU ARE F-CKING stupid...you clearly have never seen meningitis or epiglottis in children. Don't be swayed by the media.
END CHIMP Research NOW!
Not just chimps are being mistreated, check out www.meat.org. If you really care about animals go vegan! Why love one but eat the other!
Are babies more like us? Why can't people spend the same energy devoted to consider the feelings of chimpanzees on stopping the killing of babies because of abortions?
One of the best statements posted so far....people are showing more compassion for chimps than the life of the unborn, the homeless and people with mental illness. Plus the Federal government is providing the monies for the "better" living conditions while people are losing their homes....let's care for people first.
I love all animals. BUT this is ridiculous! PEOPLE are saved thanks to the research done with these animals. If your mother/daughter/husband had a chance to take a medicine that would save his or her life that was tested on an animal, would you give it to them? Of course you would!
How are people saved? WHAT drugs have come out of these horrific experiments? How many chimps/dogs/cats/rabbits have to die because someone failed to protect their child against Draino or Clorex bleach? Or because you like the makeup you wear on your face?
wv mama, yes of course, but enough, is enough!
Every drug, vaccine and ointment that you can find on the market. Without animal testing, no pharmaceutical company can sell the drug. Animals cannot sue but humans can and hence the necessity to test on animals.
I am so embarrassed by these mindless & heartless humans that put themselves above others that are sentient beings. Open your eyes & open what brain you have left. And please stop interjecting the abortion argument into every subject. And the 2 so-called Doctors (I've seen those 2 ass holes before...) need to be removed from their thrones & put in their place - like a nice cozy concrete room with a view, of course. I'm sorry but, I truly dislike those little slugs & I wish that I could remember their names but, I jumped the gun & got tangled up writing this before I had looked into their names. This is a very emotional subject & it will always be so until the human animal can look into the eyes of our brethren with true respect...
You have drugs tried and tested on animals that have killed or created other countless illnesses or diseases in people. Not counting the drugs that they still put on the market that have killed countless animals. For pete's sake they tested mascara on rabbits for years. Why? because they don't have the ability to blink so they smeared the product on their eyes. Is that the way you use or used your mascara? I think not. Those animals cannot tell them how those so called "tested for humanity" drugs make them feel. WE CAN and they don't listen to you. That man said they are NOT human, so wake up!
who decides that human lives are more valuable than other creatures'?
Hmmm... the public and FDA.
That is why NOW is the time to change the public and FDA opinion.
The old guy who runs the lab should run the biomedical research on himself - he's old enough & has nothing to lose - after all, he's lived a good life! I think it's ludicrous that they would keep chimps who aren't even being used for research confined just like "books on a shelf" just in case they need them. Ridiculous & horribly cruel . . . .
I have to agree with this statement. The man did himself and his lab no good. His comments regarding books and stockpiling the chimps like a library were indefensible. I, for one, am glad he was so honest with his beliefs. His mannerisms and speech were so affected(disaffected?) that I wondered if something was wrong with him psychically.
stop all animal testing and do all the testing on death row inmates!!!
you people are disgusting SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE Ymake a law YOU DR ON TV YOUR AN Ass $$$$ one day you will have no more chimps and i hope they will make a law for not using animals
then once animals are done being tested, they can use insane human beings like yourself
I understand that we used to need animals for testing for our benefit, but now let us think of a way to eliminate testing these chimps. They show you on the news the side effects of the experiments chimps have been scarred for life. Some can not stop shaking, or carry a safety blanket with them for security. Chimps are animals that should be free, and never have to see the inside of a lab again. enough is enough.
I couldn't have said it better Allison!!
SO how do we test the cancer drugs and invaluable vaccines that your babies are vaccinated against. Give the scientists a viable alternative (FYI: There isn't any) and they will cease testing. Trust me it is very expensive to test animals and considering the poor research funding, they will gladly do away with animals.
Agree Agree Allison!!! We need to help these poor souls!
Please Congress - can agree on this one???!!
I think there is jakku... We're testing on live creatures... who have feelings and are so like us ... yet we ban testing on stem cells... I don't get it.
I am a scientist. Whenever we plan experiments on animals, we always look for alternatives to animal research simply because it is too expensive and time consuming. So really.. when animal research is done, it is always because there are NO alternatives.
shame on you! there are alternatives, just not ones that are convenient... your text said it all, you just wrote it backwards... too expensive & time consuming to find an alternative, the real truth. Bet you wouldn't try an experiment on yourself or your own family... or may be you would?
jakku, serious question for you. How does every other country (except one unnamed country in Africa which I doubt conducts medical research in the first place) conduct medical research without the use of chimpanzees? And I hope you don't argue that the US is the only country to come up with breakthroughs in medical research. There have been recent breakthroughs out of Ireland, etc. Even in Hep C which the Texas scientists claim requires chimps, an Australian university has made strides without the use of chimps. Even the head of virology at UCSF says the newest Hep C breakthroughs came without the use of chimps. So how does everyone else do it but we can't?
In my opinion, the use of chimps is nonsensical. It's expensive. Yet another reason why our prescription costs are out of control. Other scientists call the use of chimps in research lazy and even dangerous. Thalidomide was tested on chimps first and then used in humans. Chimps didn't exhibit any issues so it was given the green light for humans with horrific results. So if another model closer to human, such as tissue and cell models, perhaps the Thalidomide defects would not have happened.
I hope I'm not coming across as attacking you, I'm genuinely curious as to how some US scientists can argue for the necessity of the use of chimps when the rest of the industrialized world seems to do fine without them.
Thanks.
I agree with you totally HCast! There is always another alternative or two or three. You still haven't figured out how to cure the common cold as a scientist. How long and how much money was spent on studying the sex life of the Tetsi fly? Probably still trying to figure it out. It's easy to say things like that about one that has no way to say NO to you. Less time consuming, isn't it?
