Rock Center
In central Florida, the road to The White House starts on Interstate 4. The highway cuts across the state from east to west. Nearly one in four voters along the "I-4 corridor" are registered independent or have no party affiliation and no allegiance to Republicans or Democrats. They are a swing part of a swing state that's up for grabs in 2012.
While Republican candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul fight for victory in Tuesday's Florida primary, NBC's Kate Snow talks to residents about the issues that will determine the outcome of the election in November. No matter who they intend to vote for, there's a pervasive sense that the system in Washington is “broken.”
Editor's note: Kate Snow's report, "Florida, Florida, Florida!" airs Monday, Jan. 30 at 10pm/9c on Rock Center with Brian Williams.

I have to agree with the last sentence in it's entirety. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN.
Republicans AND Democrats only spew platitudes to the voters when on the campaign trail to buy a vote.
When they're NOT in public view, they ALL bow down and lick the boots of the powerful money brokers.
When we get the money out of politics, WE THE PEOPLE will again have a:
Government Of the People, By the People and For the People.
I couldn't agree more with Florida and you XDm9mm. I have been disassociated with both parties for quite a while now. The Washington toilet has been overflowing with the sh1t they call "government" and needs to be flushed once and for all..
We need a Constitutional amendment to get money out of politics, or politics out of money.
EnoughZnough.... couldn't agree more. I'm INDEPENDENT and have been for over 30years. I vote the person... not the party. UNFORTUNATELY, the two prime parties in power control who gets on a ballot at the state level, and they gerrymander "dictrict" lines to ensure their boot licker gets the votes.
Representatives should receive campaign contributions from VOTERS within their DISTRICT only.
Senators should receive campaign contributions from VOTERS within their STATE only.
Presidential candidates should receive campaign contributions from VOTERS of the USA only.
NO PAC's/Super PAC's, NO Union or Special Interest money, NO corporate Money through "Promotions" or use of corporate property or personnel.
Let the voters ONLY fund campaigns. As it is ony PEOPLE who can vote, let them fund the candidate of their choice.
Then work on the state level to change the stranglehold the Republicans and Democrats have on ballot access.
Leroy... Never heard the Moyers comment.. I'd change it slightly:
"The system isn't broken, it's rigged and the fix is in."
hey there...Mister I will lead and also hallucinate.
Keep your Venisson recipes to yourself. If your children are overly compensated, though you are not their father...and those same children are also in turn Wading through the same doo doo you volunteer as PLATITUDE-ish information....get on the Horn. Produce some interseting cut and paste information relative to your Knowledge of this. SOMETHING. I'll offer WSJ.com and The smirking Chimp....
danton steele, all I can think of as a response is;
????????????????????????WTF??????????????????????????
It IS time for some campaign reform....look at the all the money spent on campaigning!!! This process of going from state to state for these various primary elections is ridiculous...just have a couple of debates and let every state vote at once. What a waste.
It's said that President Obama has a billion dollar war chest for the upcoming election... Really? A billion dollars...People are jobless and hungry here...we are way out of balance!
And what exactly does that mean?
XDm9mm, EXACTLY! I just have a nasty feeling in my gut that you and I probably will not see such "intelligence" possessed by th e American people.. Sad.
And yes danton steele, what in the he11 arre you talking about?
Fire all of the bast@rds. They're nothing but lying scum, they only care about the money they can get from lobbyist for their re-election campaigns. and whatever they can pocket on the public dole. None of them have the courage to do whats right for the country and the middle class, or what's left of the middle class.
They would just be replaced with different bast@rds championed by the same deep pockets the originals were.
XDm9mm
Couldn't agree more!
Danton Steele's comment made about as much sense as anything that the political or Religious Right ever asserts.
Either that, or Danton is having a stroke and needs immediate medical attention.
(Reuters) - President Barack Obama formally notified Congress on Thursday that he plans a $1.2 trillion increase in the U.S. debt limit, prompting Republicans to level election-year charges that deficits are out of control.
The proposed increase would push the debt ceiling to $16.394 trillion.
I think Danton has already been doing his self prescribed street medication.
Along with firing all of them on Capitol hill, set term limits for house and congress, just like the president. No more career politicians. Then there's far less money incentive. Then if an idiot gets up there, he will only be up there for a term then he's gone.
XDm9mm
I agree. We no longer have Democrats or Republicans, they have mutated into Demopublicans and Republicrats. They both serve the same masters and don't give a damn about either the country or the voters (except when they want your vote).
The problem is that we continue to elect / re-elect them just like Senator Jack S Phogbound in Lil' Abner. we already know that they are all crooks, but we keep sending them back to Washington because, as they say in Dogpatch:
We the voters are the ones at fault because we vote for ideology and promises over Truth, honesty, and integrity. Pogo the Possum was right about 50 years ago when he said:
it's estimated that there are 1.5 million illegal aliens living and working in Florida - that's 1.5 million jobs that could be filled by American workers - and I ain't talking about picking fruit
....just visit the "Tragic Kingdom" sometime and you'll see what I mean
meanwhile...all Newt can talk about is "grandmothers" and Mitt is too scared to open his mouth on the subject
...what a couple of clowns we have here
First of all, there are not going to be any Constitutional Admendments anytime in our lifetimes. Not going to happen. A member of the House or Senate has to submit it and get it through all of the rules; then get the following agreements/votes completed:
Secondly, the Supreme Court has held that free speech includes the ability to use your money to help 'make or deliver that free speech'. Tv, Radio, Print, etc.
Lastly - the States are given the right by the Constitution on how to structure their voting (binding vote; party line; caucus; etc.) and when to hold their 'primaries' and 'caucuses'.
I've got to say, and it's been said a thousand times, we HAVE term limits and it's called elections...Problem is that people (voters) always want to "vote out the scum" but never their own scum politicians.
As far as the money goes in terms of buying elections....gotta talk to the Supreme Court about that. They're the one's who basically "made" the Super Pacs with their decision about monetary limits to elections a year or so ago.
Generally, I agree with you ALL....money is WAY too big a factor in our election process. and....indeed....danton steele, what the "H" are you trying to say? Would take a politician to figure it out.
One major factor in reducing the amount of money a candidate needs to raise, and therefore making it more feasible for public financing, is to grant all candidates equal air time on TV for free.
The vast majority of a candidate's spending is on TV time, and "We the People" own those airwaves and lease them out to corporations on an annual basis. It wouldn't cost us a dime to provide free and equal TV time to the various candidates, cutting their campaign "war chest" needs by 2/3rds.
I like Bill Moyers quote:
"The system isn't broken, it's fixed."
Vote Republican - They create jobs (overseas) and wealth (for the 1%)
Actually common... YOU create jobs overseas every time YOU buy something imported. And by extension create wealth for the corporations that do it.
Buy American.... keep your neighbor working.
It's getting harder and harder to buy American, nearly impossible.
Spent over twenty minutes last summer trying to buy an American made hand shear for my second job.
Not one shear was made in America.
Thought I had two shears in my hand that were made in America but after reading the fine print, it read: parts made in insert any country but America.
Assembled in America is not the same as made in America.
Thank you bill clinton, NAFTA was a great idea for America.
KJW..
I feel your pain.
I've found virtually everything I buy American "sourced" and made on line.
And yes, the Made in the USA label can be deceiving. Most sites I visit also include the statement that the MATERIALS are sourced from American firms.
It's frustrating to say the least, but if everyone did it, maybe, just maybe we could get AMERICANS back to work.
There is a website that gives you links to companies that still manufacture here in America.
I cannot remember the site's name.
I found it though buy searching American Made Products.
americans can get back to work by retraining and reeducating themselves. we have extremely high demand for software engineers in my local area but we can't find qualified ones.
the bottom line is that we don't really want "jobs", we want "easy, low skilled jobs at an overbloated union pay rate". there are jobs out there, but they require skills that are not easy to obtain and require a lot of hard work, education and training to get there. most americans are lazy and have no interest in putting in the time and effort to learn a skill that is truly in demand.
NitroNate...
Not everyone can or should do "software engineering", nor should they be lawyers, doctors, accountants or psyhical therapists.
What ever happened to people working with their hands? What about electricians, plumbers, painters, carpenters? Or maybe working in factories on production lines?
You have a very sad elitist view of what "work" is or should be.
Go back to your lines of code, but be careful. The high school senior today will be doing your job in a few years. Then what will you do? YOUR skills won't be as current as they have and YOU'LL need to re-educate yourself to keep up. Maybe they'll be saying the same thing about you.
I agree XDm9mm. I have re-educated a couple times thru this rough spell. It only cost me more money and a longer unemployed spell. I finally got off my arse and took whatever job I could get and just started over at the bottom.. Work my way up. There are tons of jobs if ppl are willing to flip burgers or wash dishes or work at a factory.. .. etc. Gone are the days of finding a job you want.. You have to find the job you need.
hooray for the bottom more political words for we are sce@@@@.
Very hard to buy anything that's ALL AMERICAN made. Having said that if we as American people try whenever possible, that effort will make an impact. I sent my general contractor (does commercial buildings and remodels for me), a list of US made construction materials that he sent to his subs. I have asked him to work from that list (it might cost me 5% more on average for my jobs but well worth it). Similarly I have read two articles from the WSJ that showed buying cars from the Big Three (or once was), keeps .47 cents more in the USA per dollar spent by consumers than by buying US made autos owned by import companies. So while it can be argued that my US car really isn't 100% American made, .47cents on the dollar is a SIGNIFICANT impact. People that don't TRY to by US made items shouldn't really argue about the Fed. Government not being smart (though they can say they are corrupt), because they aren't doing all they can either. As Kennedy once said, "ask not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for your Country".
Talking points vs facts below is a small history leson on NAFTA.
How Was NAFTA Started?:
The impetus for NAFTA actually began with President Ronald Regan, who campaigned on a North American common market. In 1984, Congress passed the Trade and Tariff Act. This is important because it gave the President "fast-track" authority to negotiate free trade agreements, while only allowing Congress the ability to approve or disapprove, not change negotiating points. Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney agreed with Reagan to begin negotiations for the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in 1988, went into effect in 1989 and is now suspended due to NAFTA. (Source: NaFina, NAFTA Timeline)
When Was NAFTA Started?:
NAFTA was signed by President George H.W. Bush, Mexican President Salinas, and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in 1992. It was ratified by the legislatures of the three countries in 1993. The House approved it by 234 to 200 on November 17 and the Senate by 60 to 38 on November 20. It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on December 8, 1993 and entered force January 1, 1994. Although it was signed by President Bush, it was a priority of President Clinton's, and its passage is considered one of his first successes. This is asking onlookers to muster heroics and vote.Regardless of truth, liability, citizenry, etc.
The only way they can continue to benefit themselves at out expense is to stay in office - instead of voting Dem or Rep, vote against incumbents; if we could actually turn enough of them out in a single election, it would get their attention.
AMEN...term limits is a way to eventually clean up Washington!!! We can force it on them by voting out incumbents!!
US Born..you are correct..we really need term limits....but they will have to come from each state to get the heavy push needed to get any washington reps to vote in their favor..otherwise...never happn. Can not see any politixan now in washington voting him or herself out of a job. One oither item needs to also be addressed along these lines..and that is the pay they get and do not earn....nor the retirement they get but also do not earn. Consider...most polioticans are pushing for us middle class and the poor to buy their own ins..however, have not heard any politican make the clain that they will from now on buy their own ins..
I can't help but wonder what will happen to America when we finally abandon the idea that persuit of the "American dream" of succeding through hard work. personal sacrifice, commitment, etc. and embrace an "entitlement" society. I have lived and worked in over 40 countries in my 68 years and socialisim and the so called Europen model has failed eventually in every one of them. I don't know the answer, but a free ride on success isn't the right one.
The Democrats solution to everything is "tax the rich".
The Republican solution to everything is "ban all abortions".
The real problem is that politics and government work does not attract the best and brightest.
no stress...think you are a bit off on what you claim either party is for. The dems are pushing now for higher taxes on the wealthy...nothing new there..the wealthy are taxed much less now than ever ..yet...the republicans are pushing for their wealthy friends taxes to be even less than they are now...which many pay, when compared in reality to what most middle class pay out..less percentage wise....and Romney is a great example. I really have little faith in either party...they both accept huge funds from lobbyist and their own wealthy friends. The jobs that have left this country have been helped along by a congress that , through lobbyist, have opened doors for these companies to leave in the name of profits...and many are going to China of all places...where freedom is a very dirty word.
Do you work for the government, Ivan?
The wealthy are taxed less because it's not earned income from a job, but investments that are their main source of wealth. They paid taxes on the income used to make those investments. Raising capital gains taxes will inhibit taking risk by investing in the market. You have a minimal write off if the investment tanks. Now Obama wants to treat investments the same as income. He's retarded.
shane- unearned income should be taxed higher than earned income, not lower. the country ran a lot better when there were higher tax rates- larger middle class, smaller poor class, plenty of rich. we need the tarrifs that we had in place from the inception of the USA =until regan when when he personally destroyed america by giving amnesty to millions of illegals, deregulated every industry, let foreigh terrorists kill United States Marines (i take this personally since im a retired Marine) without any consequences... on and on and on
bill..###lots of numbers. The reason that Regan gave three million illegals amnesty was because the democrats swore up and down that if he did they would seal the southern border. Guess what ...it never happened. Now Obama wants to do the same for twenty million illegals but still doesn't want to seal the border. The lesson....If you give amnesty to millions of illegals then you will have 10 times as many coming across the border looking for the same treatment. Just when does it end. For me = NO amnesty or even talks of amnesty until the border is sealed.
I am 58 years old and have worked hard all my life. I make less than $20,000 a year and have saved enough to invest in a house to flip every now and then. The profit I make on that investment is capital gains. So you think that I should be taxed more so that it is not worth my time to do these houses. I rarely make more than $10,000 when all is said and done and they tax me at 15% but if it becomes income they tax me at a little over 30%. But if you tax me more then I can not keep these 3 men working. Don't forget that most small investors do not make a lot of money and you just want to make it worse on the millions of poor people like me (based on the income, I am considered one of the poor) That just does not make sense. I would be better off just keeping the one house as a rental instead of work 3 men.
I think there is a compromise here. Cap. gains as part of a retirement plan of under "X million = whatever seems like a good/fair threshold should be left alone. But for the those making above that per year on Cap. gains (let's just say $5mm for the sake of argument), the tax should be more. What we don't want is to punish the middle and upper middle class for doing the right thing in planning for their retirement. Nor do we want to punish those that invest in the companies of our Country. But we dont want the super wealthy to pay more to the point that we don't have a diminishing return specific to investment cap. that WE ALL benefit from specific to macro economics. COMPROMISE! --> you know, that thing that the Dems and GOP can't seem to do well together... that thing that Obama said his "CHANGE" would fix when he got into office.
Agreed Bullet45 - I'm all for talks about what we need to do with our immigration problem but the FIRST STEP is sealing the border and hammering those that hire these folks. What many of the Latino in the SW don't understand is that a person that understands and sympathises with them specific to the people/children/poor side can ALSO see the significant impact it has made on our Nation and in particular our border States. America may have turned a blind eye for decades when it wasn't a problem but (millions of people, crime, kidnapping/coyotes, jobs, violence, insurance rates, hospital rates going up due to the uninsured using emergency rooms for their medical), have made it a problem that has to be addressed. THEN we can start talking about how to get the top % of folks/students a path to quicker citizenship. The Dems are talking nice because they know that 95% of the poor Latino will vote Dem.
Bill, your "logic" is flawed... While Reagan certainly wasn't perfect (no President has been, not even that other Republican Lincoln), his deregulation did as much good as it did harm. Yes it's true the middle class has shrunk, many dropped into the lower class and many jumped up (far more millionaires today than when he took office in spite of millions more illegals coming in and skewing the numbers for the poor). Wanna see how "regulation" works for the middle class? Look at Detroit where legacy union costs mean the Big Three spend $13 an hour more to build a car than the import companies that build in the USA. Look at Detroit, it's America's largest ghost town. I personally have a woman that works for me who's father has been gone for 30yrs but her mom STILL gets checks from GM. What we do agree on is Reagan granting amnesty to what has been MILLIONS of illegals. But you failed to mention that he did so with the promise of the Dem. controlled House/Senate saying they would close the border.
The hole tax system needs a overhaul. A flat tax based on income is much better. $30,000 and under pay 15%
$30,001 and up to0 %50,000 pay 20%
$50,001 and up too $100,000 pay 30%
and so on the problem with this the more you make the more you pay so it's harder to get Rich but you end up with a surplus once you pay off the debt, no i didn't say pay down i said pay off. And no tax breaks at all. Lets face it the country is broke it's time to take away congress's check book.
About 30% of all folks in florida are retired and worried about social security. They are not on welfare, but have earned their retirement by paying into it. With them, it is about the economy and SS and taxes. It is hard to live on $1,400 a month and that is about what married couples get; without another retirement income.
If the title of this article is true and if the polls are acurate, the Florida electorate is a very confussed group! Romneys fiscal plan is clearly not the best, and if any really believe that he will repeal Obama care, well they are just fooling themselves! He claims there are differences between Romney Care and Obama Care, if that's true it will take an extremely sensative insturment to detect that difference! This will just be the first of many campaign promices he'll break, just in the first 100 days!
Newsflash...Everyone should know that it was ALL the REPUBLICAN Supreme Court Justices who voted IN the "Corporations are People Too" law which now allows 'Big Money' and CEO's to control our politics.
And just so we're clear, "Tea Partiers"...ALL the DEMOCRATIC Supreme Court Justices voted AGAINST this horrendous new law. If that doesn't tell you which party is all about 'power, money and 'control'...nothing will.
and yes, obama did LIE when he said the supreme court made it legal for foreign companies to contribute to campaigns.
chumbkt, you are 100% incorrect in your statement. What the Citizens United ruling did was pave the way for the creation of Super Pacs. Super Pacs can take money from ANY SOURCE and do not have to disclose who donated that money. This does make it perfectly legal to allow interests outside the US to contribute and influence the US political landscape...through these Super Pacs. Not to mention a whole host of other unsavory things that can be used to mislead voters. Please get your facts straight before saying such uninformed things.
I don't understand why so many registerd republicans, who say they want to strenghten the economy and really take measures to get rid of our dept, would not take this opportunty to vote for Ron Paul. You don't have to agree with everything the man stands for, but at least you know where he stands. Everyone else, both dems and reps will say anything to get your vote and then it is business as usual in Washington with the lobbiests, backstabbers, and bed partners. I once was a reg rep. then changed to dem, now IND. It's a complex mess we are in, no easy answers, but putting in a classic rep or dem in 2012 is just asking for more of the same....So many think a vote for Paul is a wasted vote...Don't be so sure...make a statement!!!
I made a statement with none other than Ross Perot one time. He was right about NAFTA and the national deficit but he did not have a chance to actually reach office. I think it is the same concern with Ron Paul. While he is admired by many the media has so successfully vilified him that his election seems unlikely. Still I did it once I may do it again. It would be a total shock to the system if he did win...and lets face it we need a total shock to the system.
I heard Floridians are not smart!
You're an idiot...and your generalization is proof that you are most likely a backwoods, toothless, inbred redneck.
How's that feel?
Congratulations on learning how to type, Cletus.
@ chris-3123869,
Oh how true that statement is and here is why.About 4\5ths of the people who live in Fla.are from the cold country(you know the type everything is better up north folks)and when they relocated to the SunShine State they declared that they needed to educate the massess on the way this state should run, look and behave you know just like New York City (mass transit, more transplants and manners) So now we have just the stuff that made NYC go broke back in the day crime/law enfrocement, decaying infrastuctior, bottom of the barrel education systems just to name a few of the things, hell I'll bet that 2/3rds of are state politcs are NOT brone of this state but they are the ones that get say what money goes where.Hell look at are fine GOV. SCOTT lives in Naples for 10 years and knows all the evils that should be addresed (drug test for the neede, 6 million a year, drug test state workers 18 million a year, boy I feel safer already and he has only been in for a year. By the way it is his former company who gets to do those drug test at $35-$75 a pop.Now lets talk about those Fla. drivers ,the ones who learned how to drive when they were on the subways all those years before retiring here . Ya Chris you are right Floridian's are stupid they are the ones who should have helped the indians build the fence that Tex,Az and NM. keep talking about, but to late I'm afraid.
The best (and fastest) way to begin correcting this economical disaster we're in would be to a.) reverse the 'Corporations right to now buy our elections' meaning all campaign funds can only come from the (HUMAN!!!) voters....and b.) THROW OUT ALL CORPORATE LOBBYISTS. Unless these two vital steps have been reached...our country will only continue its downward spiral. It's simply unfathomable how the Republican voters have not grasped this...
StaceynSeattle...
In case you haven't heard, the Democrats are also beholden to the very same special interest powerful money that the Republicans are.
what happend to obamas "no lobbyests in my administration"?
It's the same lip service from both Dem and Rep, but no one really wants it to be actually enforced...both have their own agenda that need lobbyests....sounds good to spout out, as so many other empty promises!!!
Really, xDm9mm...? So rather than evade the point of my comment...why do you feel the Republican Supreme Court Justices voted to allow Corporatations to buy our politicians...and the Democratic Justices voted AGAINST THIS NEWLY MINTED LAW. That is the point and the real question...which you are IGNORING, or to be more accurate...'deflecting', Gingrich style.
xDm9mm, Hello? Hello? I would like to hear your explanation as to why if what you say is true....then why oh why was the Supreme Court's decision allowing limitless corporate campaign donations divided right down political lines? As in all Republican justices voting for the new law...and all Democratic justices opposing it. Please...stop putting your 'head in the sand'...this ruling speaks for itself, thus invalidating your "opinion".
Unfortunately the court rules by precedence and the precedence of a corporation as a person was set years ago when corporations were first discussed and allowed.
The advantage is the ability of a business to exist beyond its founders life time. If not many beneficial companies would have collapsed before their time. Car manufacturing, computers, cell phones, television, medical diagnostic machines, and a whole level of technology that we take for granted was a result of corporations R & D coupled to longevity. Just a simple act of an amendment to the constitution creating term limits for Senators and Representatives and limited contributions by individuals would kill the whole machine. If you are willing to run on that platform I will vote for you. You would have to run against Patty Murray in Washington...someone I bet you support and vote for...who promised not to stay as long as she has...funny how power corrupts on so quickly.
The members of both parties are directly responsible for the mess we are in today by allowing their leadership to get to a point of being untouchable.
Fire all of the bast@rds. They're nothing but lying scum, they only care about the money they can get from lobbyist for their re-election campaigns. and whatever they can pocket on the public dole. None of them have the courage to do whats right for the country and the middle class, or what's left of the middle class.
Tomvet...
hopefully, more and more people will start waking up and realizing the truth of that.
Republican or Democrat is irrelevant. BOTH major parties are owned by the very same special interests.
AMEN brother!
i'm voting straight democratic. and hope the congress turns democratic and hope they get off their buns and start moving legislation.
The truth is if Obama is in next year and there's a Republican Congress, it's going to be the same old same old. Same bickering. Protection of turf. If he gets a democratic Congress, I think things will move speedily.
Sally, yes it will.
The entire country will look like Chicago and Illinois... a cesspool of political corruption.
you want legislation to move thru congress? Call your man Harry Reid and tell him to have the Senete vote on the 20+ jobs bills that the House of Representitives have sent to him.
You want what? Insane. I suppose you agree to raise the debt ceiling too? There is not enough money in the world to satisfy the Democratic party. After they run out of money, they want other peoples money, then when they run out of that money, they want to take away anything you have to keep themselves going.
I think this has already happened. Both parties are corrupt. Don't forget that Boehner handed out lobbyist checks on the house floor.
chumbkt- what about the 200 or so bills nancy pelosi sent to the senate only to be fillibustered by the republicans before the 2010 elections?
Sally,
Sorry to say that the Democrats had two unfettered years of complete control and yet could not balance a budget, make a budget, reform campaign finance laws, enact term limitations, make members of the Congress accountable to all the laws of the land, reduce the deficit, end any wars, stop any government waste, feed and cloth all the homeless in this country, reform bank laws in any meaningful way, fix the economy, create jobs, well the list of opportunities just blows the mind.
They did continue all wars and added another, spend 5 trillion dollars more than before, and enact 2500 pages of health care law they were to lazy to read. Remember Nancy Pelousi "we need to pass this bill to find out what is in it"? Yeah, that is a fine example of total Democratic leadership in action.
May your wish be granted and may you end up out of work and facing bankruptcy like me because of both parties FAILED policies. But if I see you on the street I will continue to share whatever I have with you to fend off starvation...because I am a compassionate conservative who pledges loyalty to the ideals of the Constitution of the United States of America. United we stand, divided we fall.
We have been divided by the political elite who want us to be their servants for life. We are the little people who allow them to "rule". It is time we take our country back and vote incumbents out in both parties and send a shiver through their collective spines.
" A little revolution now and then is a good thing, don't you think?" Sean Connery, The Hunt for Red October.
Boehner's "best friends"...are the Tobacco lobbyists. They all hang-out and party together on Marco Island and in Naples, Fl. I would venture to guess that he is the most 'bought and paid for'politician out there right now and is in all probability the biggest human obstacle doing his best to ensure Obama does not succeed in his hard-working efforts to right our economy. In Boehner's(and his party's) own eyes...allowing Obama to do what is necessary to protect our country (and all of us NOT in the 1%)...translates to his party losing 'the election'. Practically everything the Republican controlled congress has done since Obama/Democrats have been in office...has been to ensure he does not succeed at all costs...and the rest of America...be damned.
I agree Sally. Obama was on the right track, but the republicans vote against what they like if Obama wants it. Talk about biting off y our nose to spite your face.
Getting so tired of the uninformed supporters of Republicans saying the same things over and over again. This administration had majorities in both houses, yes, but not a FILIBUSTER PROOF majority in the senate, this always gets conveniently ignored in that statement. The filibuster was used more than at any other time over the last 2+ years and the Republicans in the senate should be held accountable for this. The filibuster killed any real progress that could have been made. Also, jobs bills are supposed to lead to the creation of jobs, not steeper tax cuts to those that are already doing extremely well. Demand causes companies to hire, not tax cuts during a recession. Pass BIG infrastructure spending bills to hire US citizens and put people back to work all over the country and you will see demand grow. The only tax incentives we should be talking about anymore are the ones that incentivize bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US, if you ship jobs overseas, your taxes should go up. It's always funny to me that the very same people and interests that are always crying about the debt we will be "leaving their grandchildren" refuse to pay a single cent more in taxes to help decrease the debt! Especially when we are currently paying fewer taxes as a nation than we have in 50 years. In fact, the policies they like, and officials they elect, will only continue to add to the deficit! It's really amazing watching people vote against their own interests...it's baffling.
It is all about the economy - Home Values and the Housing Bubble have played havoc with our economy and this current 112th Congress would rather pass anti-abortion bills rather than address this all consuming issue. Jobs will not come back until the is stability in the economy, but this current Congress keeps the most affluent from tax increases. The president paid 25 percent of his gross income in federal tax, compared to Romney’s 13.7 percent on his millions in income. And no matter how many time they say it or how arrogant they get, lower taxes never have produced jobs. The rich get richer at the expense of the poor. Congress has made and allowed this to persist! The average American working for wages will pay taxes on $106,800. The average wage earner will not make more than that. People like Romney, Obama, Gingrich, Paul and Santorum have other sources of income taxed at a lower rate, because the Congress has allowed it. There is no valid excuse for this to continue. Social Security would never have had any funding problems if ALL sources of income, no matter what the source, were taxed up to $1,000,000.00 dollars. Corporate taxes could be lowered to compete on the world stage and get corporations back to America. It's the Congress that needs revamping and shutting down the rampant limitation of taxation on the top 1%-ers. All sources of income should be taxed at the normal tax rate for Social Security and Withholding! Our Congress' have been bought over and over in the past and there is a great chasm between the super-rich and the average Joe!
You are right in what you say. Except right now we need a reduction in the cost of gas, by at least a dollar a gallon. This would cut expenses for companies to ship and recieve products. The Oil companies have control of our lives aand Congress always give Oil Companies tax breaks plus. Look at George Bush, while he was President everything went down hill. Gas went soaring, because he owns Oil wells. We started 2 wars just likie Viet Ban, a no win kill our young men kind of wars. All because the CIA made a MISTAKE. what mistake, they out LIED so they could get closer to Iran and SPY on then easier.Plus Arms dealers made a bundle of money, that were sure to over charge us for. I REALLY WISH WE HAD REPRESENATIVES THAT WORKED US. This Lobiest deal is hurting the people, They tell Congress what they want and Congress holds an empty hand that the lobiest fills as unregistered gifts. Look at President Obama, he has a friend who runs GE. Do you remember the taxes they didn`t pay or the refund they got?? I wonder how much of our debt that would have paid.
The only way to fix this mess is term limits, I've said it before, six years max for any federal office, except president. Six years for fed officer, plus six yrs, for president and no more your done. No more LIFE TIME POLITICIANS on the public dole. They get the same HC that we get. Pension can travel to the new jobs back home, their pensions have the same rules as the rest of the public.
Term limits won't matter until we get Citizens Untied overturned. Why would term limits matter in an environment where politicians can be legally bought? Get the money out of politics and term limits might not even be necessary if you think about it. If the monetary incentive isn't there for politicians, there would be a different types of people running for elected office, people that truly care about public service, not people that are interested in being lobbyists when they retire. Just my 2 cents anyway :)
You're worried about the economy yet you'll vote for the warmongers that makes sense.... /sarcasm
I won't vote for anybody unless Ron Paul runs as a third party, In my opinion is that is the only way He can beat Odumbo. And I hope he does run as a third party then he gets my vote/Ron Paul 2012
Wouldn't it be great if he (Paul) was able to get the REP nomination, then you'd have many dem moderates and independents willing to vote accross party lines. I actually know several very liberal dem who are now supporting Paul. Voting an indipendent ticket in the national election just is not going anywhere, at least not yet unfortunately. Unless a person is tied to one of the major parties its dooms day. We can only hope to secure some leverage to force dem and rep to reign in the spending.
Funny thing, Tomvet...both your current top two candidates have thoroughly outed each other. Can't say I've ever witnessed such openness of the ugly truths behind both of them. The ironic thing is...that is the only area where either of them tell the truth! The hypocrisy of Gingrich touting "family values" is beyond nauseating...considering his disgustingly lack of commitment to his numerous spouses. Yeah, right...just the kind of presidential values and character our country needs. For an exemplary example of a president with such values...one only has to look to our current president and his stellar commitment to marriage and real family values. In other words...I prefer a president whose past and present confirms his "beliefs"...as opposed to a candidate who doesn't walk the talk.
Ron Paul is as crooked as the rest of our choices. We need a POOR MAN TO RUN who will be better for the people . But not any more greedy Millonaires who want to get rich at our expense.
Tiler, You'd better have some facts to back that up.
I say vote them all out and get us fresh faces and (hopefully) ideas.
We need a Constitutional amendment to get money out of politics, or politics out of money.
^ Mitt Romney, who thinks corporations are people, and people aren't people...... better represents that problem than anyone.
I won't vote for anybody unless Ron Paul runs as a third part party.
^ There is always a John Anderson, Ross Perot, Ralph Nader, Ron Paul like character ready to waste your vote.
How many of them have a reputation for always voting along constitutional lines?
The economy crashed because there is no place for ethics in American business. Everyone runs around thinking that they have to act un-ethically to compete because if they don't their competitors will. Thus, you get things like the housing market crash. Because the banks made shady deals to try and increase their profits in the short term without considering how it would eventually blow up in their faces. News flash banks are still trying to do the same shady things that caused the crash in the first place. Why? Because if they don't their competitors will.
The economy will remain poor until business people realize that they can not continue along this same self destructive path forever.
It is about the economy in every state. Period.
FL's Republican Gov. Scott spent over $70 million of his "own" money to buy his seat. Let's not forget Rick Scott made $300 million off his healthcare company that pleaded guilty to Medicare/Medicaid fraud (which paid $1 billion in fines). Scott's Columbia/HCA was the largest private healthcare provider to defraud the U.S. Government out of the most $$$ (over $1 billion) in American History.
I live in Florida and to be honest I have no idea why we elected a criminal into the office of Governor. Scott is an embarrassment not just to Florida but to America. And by the way we've been paying for it, even those of us who didn't vote for the SOB.
now your guys are getting ready to let romney win down there. I don't know where florida gets there voting ideas. They must love watching Lying ads by the romney campaign.
I live in FL also. The reason Scott was elected is he is Republican and he is for profits for the Rich. I live near the Villages, in Marion county. They get all kinds of extras around there. The county and State roads became highways because the Villiages wanted them. While the rest of us have to pay more taxes. A new Dollar store opened up near by. The county or city paid for a road to be paved so that customers could have a smooth road. Across 484 the road is used by everybody to move around it has bumps and one section is like a rollar coster. Yet NO ONE WILL FIX IT. They just patch it so that it has more bumps.
