Rock Center
Founded in April 2009, Kickstarter is the largest online fundraising platform. The crowd-funding website is helping those with big ideas get their projects off the ground. From those seeking film funding to others seeking money to study a rare species of birds, the site is helping the super-connected generation engage in a digital version of pass the hat. However, not everyone can use Kickstarter for fundraising. Founders Perry Chen and Yancey Strickler explain to Rock Center's Kate Snow what kind of projects are accepted.

Good piece about a worthy site and subject. Skepticism about why someone would donate to any of these people is important to consider, but only goes to show how noteworthy and rare this kind of strangers helping strangers is. Anyone who has a worthy cause should at least try Kickstarter for their needs. It's there to offer assistance.
Crowdfunding is really exploding and its surprising how many people are actually willing to give! From funding apps (appbckr.com) to funding 'life plans' (gogetfunding.com) and even actually getting a stake in companies (profounder)!
So glad that crowdfunding is beginning to get the media exposure it deserves...our crowdfunding site for entrepreneurs & innovators (peerbackers.com) has been funding starts ups and ideas with strong success and it is so rewarding to see these ventures come to life. All entrepreneurs should stay tuned as the Senate is also voting next month to allow crowdfunding sites to provide equity stakes in the businesses that post on sites like ours and may allow them to raise up to a million dollars each....which would be a great infusion of capital into the small business community.
Thank you to NBC and to Rock Center with Brian Williams for featuring Kickstarter and the crowdfunding approach to garnering financial support. Thank you in particular for including our scientific project in the profiles of projects successfully funded through this approach. One of the most positive aspects of our Kickstarter fundraising was the chance to interact directly with supporters. The funding itself was also a gift, in that it allowed us to make a pilot trip to Mexico to determine whether long term work on the Elegant quail is feasible (it is!). This is a trip that we might never have made given this era's precipitous decline in funding for basic research. We are grateful to have had the opportunity. thequaildiaries.com
What a great way to show support for our entrepreneurs. And a special thanks for those who choose to support them. We truly do live in a great society.
I believe that crowdfunding will be a part of the solution to give a new meaning and bring more transparency to investment!
Many new players are showing up in the 4 main crowdfunging categories but unfortunately blogs only speak about very few one.
Just to let you know that we will launch by March 2012, A european based platform
concentrating on equity investments for innovative start-ups.
Hope you will like it.
