Janette Sadik-Khan is on a mission to tame New York's mean streets. As transportation commissioner for New York City, she's closed off half of Times Square to traffic and converted 260 miles of city streets into bike lanes. Her goal is to reduce the city's carbon footprint and manage New York's notorious traffic, while possibly creating a blueprint for other cities around the world. However, her strategy is not without controversy in a city of more than eight million residents. Rock Center’s Harry Smith reports Monday, December 5, at 10pm/9c.

We have been doing this in New Orleans for years in the French Quarter, it brings a sense of relaxation and safety by not being run over by a cab, or a bike, u must walk your bike through these areas. It also is a economic advantage for businesses in the Quarter. When you go somewhere on vacation, especially in a big city is hard to find a place to just sit, relax, people watch and enjoy a mimosa or a Hurricane, and listen to the street musicians! I think New York did a great thing changing times square!
Yeah right, Sadik-Khan, this cost "practically nothing". A million dollars just for the lawn furniture imported from France!!! She's ruined the city with a callous disregard for public safety.
^ Disregard for public safety???
Brian Williams does realize that 80% of Manhattanites don't even own a car, right? Even if you include folks driving into the boroughs only 29% of people (including carpool) coming into the city for work arrive in a car. That's not even counting the glut of tourists most of whom don't arrive with a car. They act as if this is a subjective issue.
I love the biking addition. This is how we make the biggest polluting city in the world a little more green. With a nice slap in the face :)
