The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will be lit Wednesday night in a televised special on NBC. It may be the most famous Christmas tree in America, but many don't know the tree's history or exactly how a 74-foot tree is moved through midtown Manhattan. Brian Williams digs into the Rockefeller Center archives and takes a special look at the 'Rock Center' tree.

It was noted in the story that the tree is 75 years old. What a shame to kill a tree that has been growing for 75 years. Quite different from harvesting trees from tree farms that are just a few years old. We may enjoy the beauty of this tree with artificial lights in an artificial location for a few days. But it had true grandeur as a living tree in its natural environment. No more.
